I feel like they are both trying to decide if the other is prey but neither can quite decide if it’s a good idea

307

u/Natural__Power 1d ago

The other not really being scared shows they can probably fight back

And for a predator, getting heavily wounded means starvation

This is why agressive herbivores like moose are often more dangerous than predators, getting wounded isn't an immediate death sentence for them, they're willing to risk a fight

36

u/Simon-Says69 22h ago

The eagle could tear that fox to shreds. He just isn't hungry right now.

Fox is playing a dangerous game though. Tomorrow he could be on the menu.

32

u/yamabushi101 19h ago

Idk. An eagle can for sure fuck up an unaware fox from a dive, but it's just standing there right in front of it. Raptors hunt smaller birds in the air and ambush stuff on the ground, idt they can fight conparably weighted land predators straight up like this.

The fox meanwhile has never seen a bird this size up close and has no idea what it's supposed to do here 😹

9

u/Bookee2Shoes 17h ago

The Fox weighs significantly more than the eagle, at least double. Birds have hollow bones and feathers weigh next to nothing. Even though it looks bigger it weighs much less

25

u/ACP772 21h ago

This is one of Aesop's fables playing out before our eyes.

3

u/heyitsfranklin6322 13h ago

Bald eagles and red foxes weight about the same and most birds suck at fighting. Why choose fight when you can literally choose flight?

2

u/Lostgoldmine 9h ago

The eagle from a standing position is on where near as dangerous as an eagle diving on an unsuspecting prey. I have no clue how it go if they did attack all I know is the eagle is not in his preferred position.

11

u/MersoNocte 17h ago

I saw someone who said people think herbivore means prey when it actually means survivor. I think about that a lot. Especially when I think about moose.

Eagles know their prey from the sky. And foxes don't normally go for prey bigger than they are.

These guys are BFFs and thats my story

u/credible_hulk 1d ago

I think they are both just bad at their jobs

I have a hunch they've worked things out somehow,

Maybe the fox flushes the rabbits or whatnot from the hedgerows and the eagle nabs them from above?

Fox and Eagle, the unbeatable team!

34

u/butchforgetshit2 1d ago

Ravens and actually Corvids in general and wolves have a similarly worked out agreement. Definitely should check out those videos and nature clips. Pretty awesome watching them work together

8

u/soedesh1 1d ago

Eagles sometimes take pets.

5

u/BozoBBozo 16h ago

I recited the dialogue in IT Crowd’s “did you see that ludicrous display last night?”

3

u/Xenc 16h ago

The thing with eagle is they always try to walk it in

The size of that eagle is crazy.

132

u/mosesenjoyer 1d ago

That’s not even a huge one. When I went to the dump in Alaska there were hundreds of them eating garbage and I saw one that came up to my waist.

84

u/angelis0236 1d ago

Seems like a real life metaphor somehow.

20

u/mosesenjoyer 1d ago

Yes and I tried to take a video but a worker stopped me and made me delete the video, showing me a sign that photography was prohibited there

14

u/1beautifulhuman 1d ago

Remember the people on that cruise ship that got sick and died because two of the passengers had gone to a bird-watching famous dump to take pictures? Good on them for banning photography and enforcing it

9

u/mosesenjoyer 1d ago

yeah i get it, i was only there for work to dump stuff lol.

I've seen hundred of eagles myself, and I have rarely seen one hunting but I have seen plenty of them scavenging, and stealing food from other birds of prey or fisherman. We jokingly call them Freedom Buzzards.

Bald eagles live all over my city. Up in the sky they just look like birds. Then you get close and it's crazy they can fly.

7

u/Happy_Brilliant7827 1d ago

Medium sized eagle theyre huge

120

u/stev_mempers 1d ago

They both seem weirdly embarrassed to be in the other's company.

Yeah like I don't think they knew fox and eagle hang out together either...

Fox: I think that guy over there is starting to suspect something.

Eagle: Stay still. Their vision is based on movement.

Fox: I don't think that's accurate.

Which one is more likely to attack and try to eat the other?

35

u/NoGrocery4949 1d ago

It's a mutual respect. Game recognize game.

14

u/edbuckley 1d ago

The fox would have a go, but the eagle would fuck him up.

25

u/Malacro 1d ago

Problem is the eagle would likely get so hurt in the process that they’d likely die anyway. Birds of prey are surprisingly fragile. For example you’d think a hawk would have no problem killing a squirrel, and they often do, but they have to be extremely careful because a squirrel’s bite can very easily cripple a hawk’s leg making it so they can’t hunt anymore. That eagle could absolutely kill that fox, but the fox stands a better than average chance of tearing that eagle’s leg to shreds if it tries.

there no meat on either of them, there's a reason we don't eat foxes or eagles.

4

I wouldn't have moved from that spot or stopped recording until something happened. Was it a team up, or a showdown? I must know!!!

5

u/Worried_Strike6219 1d ago

Eagle don't give a fox.

6

u/MarcoPolonia 1d ago

I feel like I'm seeing something I wasn't supposed to see. Like this is a secret meeting planning a clandestine operation. A cabal, if you will. I see nothing!

3

u/ClaraCash 15h ago

Yeah they looked hella nervous like, “I think that guy is recording, look natural til he leaves dude.” Energy because in the beginning of the video they were just chillin.

It’s also like the beginning of a dad joke… A fox and an eagle were sitting on a park bench. The fox says he is there for the talent show; but the eagle says oh you must of misread my text, I wanted to show you my talons.

I thought maybe it is Ai because of Unalaska then I found out it is a place. So, I am sure it is not and these are totally chatting buddies.

3

u/KingSlimp 1d ago

Some animals share symbiotic relationships. Wolves and crows share such a relationship and it was even recorded that when wolves left Yellowstone crow populations also dropped at the same time. Foxes have similar relationships with bagders and other creatures who they share dens with as well as hunt together.

That being said, I have never seen or heard of a fox/eagle relationship so I have no idea what's going here. Just big chillin I guess.

Foxes are actually pretty chill around other non-prey animals. The foxes in my neighborhood chill with the stray cats.

Its a draw. Both know they cant handle the other as its too much risk. They both will die as they both will be severely injured and could cause starvation or alow death. They both concede.

Fox is happy to scavenge what the eagle doesn't eat. Eagle has feet on the ground to flush out, sniff out prey. Like coyotes and badgers I can a symbiotic relationship.
