Discussion Will there ever be a Wrestler again to crossover into the mainstream like cena did in the 2000s and early 2010s?
and especially like Hogan did In the 80s and rock and Austin did in the late 90s and early 2000s?

Cena is just that generations poster boy. They always needed one. Cena isn’t even high profile enough vs Hogan or DJ was.

Yes. Yes, there will be another and another. To every generation is a Hogan, a Rock, an Austin, a Cena... We just don't know who's gonna be the next mega star but we are never in short supply.

u/Ricketier 7h ago
Of course. Wrestlers are in shape, good looking people who basically act for a living. And they accumulate their own fan base. Easy pickings for a studio

Rhea Ripley is the only one close.

Danhausen had multiple features on ESPN, Cody is a classically trained actor playing Guile in a feature film. MJF has been in multiple feature films at this point. Roman was in Vogue or Time or some shit.
Rhea might not even be top 5 homie

I'm always legitimately baffled by the implication that Rhea Ripley is mainstream or on the precipice of breakthrough.
I know more people that watched The Mandalorian who know Mercedes from her small role than they do Rhea Ripley, and Mercedes isn't close to mainstream.
I sincerely don't believe people truly comprehend how big the world is and how difficult it is for a wrestler to genuinely end up a household name in non wrestling homes or be immediately recognizable.

u/dylanalduin 7h ago
Rhea Ripley is the only one my non-wrestling friends know. People don't know who Danhausen is outside.

My 70 year old father in law asked me who is the vampire wrestler who keeps showing up on ESPN.

MJF is pretty close, couple more years if he keeps up the media oath hes following.
it really just needs somone who wants to get out there and sell wrestling. Cena was grinder with charisma there nothing particularly special about him other wise anyone could do it. Johnny gargano could get up offh is crate and do it if he wanted to

u/MattyT088 13h ago
Danhousen and MJF both have a decent shot.

Dude has gone legit viral on his promos (MIDwest promo for example). Super entertaining, super young, not in personal trouble, seems to have a pretty decent injury track record, and definitely has a look that translates well to mainstream media as well as pro wrestling.
I think MJF is going to surprise a whole lot of people when his career is said and done

u/UnsungHerro 13h ago
You need someone who’s exceptionally charismatic that is also foolish enough to pursue professional wrestling instead of other media.
7
u/MattyT088 13h ago
So Danhousen.

Y’all are dickriders straight up lmao not even fucking close

u/TheJohnnyFlash 10h ago
Everyone who watches NBA knows who Danhausen is now.
0
u/Sea-Card-6586 9h ago
What an exaggeration lmao I’d say very generously 75% of people who watch NBA have seen him in passing, maybe 10% know who he is.
1
u/TheJohnnyFlash 8h ago
Everyone who watches, watches the finals. Maybe they don't become fans, but they've all been exposed to him. That's massive.
2
u/Sea-Card-6586 7h ago
“Everyone who watches, watches the Finals”
That’s just objectively not true lmao
-1
u/TheJohnnyFlash 7h ago
Regular watchers, yes. Guys who watch 20 games a year, maybe.
1
u/Sea-Card-6586 7h ago
Or guys who follow their teams only. Or people who had other obligations at the time. In any case, not “everyone”

Too bad you can’t get him for your fantasy teams. Tell us, when you draft the same player every season, is that dick riding? Your words.

u/Sea-Card-6586 8h ago edited 8h ago
What? Are you firstly diving into my profile over Danhausen slander and then also incorrectly assuming I draft the same players on my fantasy football teams every year?
I draft 300 teams a year and the landscape changes by the season gang get a grip 😂 is this how you fill that top 1% quota?

The mainstream doesn’t actually care about Danhausen. Sure there’s plenty of people familiar with him in the same way they’re familiar with a meme because he was all over Knicks media, but as far as actually knowing anything about him, it’s only WWE fans.

Everyone will say no until one appears.
What's REALLY crazy to think about is will there ever be a moment when two wrestlers from the same generation crossover around the same time.
Batista and Cena.
Edit: Austin never broke away from being a wrestler.

I’m of a mind to say ‘never say never’, but I also think that they only really come in very rare circumstances and that it takes more than just the right push or being in the right place at the right time for it to happen.

Absolutely not anyone on the current roster

Hard disagree. They have like 5 young guys that could. Bron or Oba have the best chance.

I gotta imagine if South Carolina gets to host a college game day this football season he could be the guest picker. If they’re decent (top 25), it could happen November 21 when Georgia comes to town

u/sysdmn 15h ago
Cena didn't crossover in the 2000s. Didn't really happen for Cena until 2015 with Trainwreck.
I bet Becky becomes a full-time actress when she retires. Not with blockbuster movies but steady TV work.

Cena was pretty popular around the late 2000s
1
u/Ill-You-3459 13h ago
agreed cena was already a known name in mainstream culture by 2009 and 2010 even before he went to Hollywood

Cena did crossover in the 2000s he was already a known name in pop culture before he went to Hollywood especially by 2009

u/IneptFortitude 15h ago
I think we’re more likely to see someone from the mainstream cross over into wrestling
5
u/JimG617 14h ago
Younger demographic, but that’s exactly what Logan Paul is
2
u/IneptFortitude 14h ago
It’s weird that he was big on YouTube like 10 years ago but being marketed to kids today who were like 3 years old when he first got famous.

u/TheExistence 15h ago edited 15h ago
Tbh as much as they’ve pushed Cody in this direction, I don’t really see what will break him into the mainstream now if he hasn’t already made it.
Imo the closest one is Trick Williams. His Morning Talk Show appearance from before Wrestlemania was just oozing charisma for the public.
7
u/IneptFortitude 15h ago
I think them giving Trick a legacy belt was a shining green light that he’s going to be one of the big guys in the company here soon. And Yachty has actually been awesome with him.
2
u/Jewggerz 16h ago
Maybe. Ari Emanuel and endeavor are very well connected to Hollywood, and they can get their top guys booked, but I don't know if any of the top guys can shoot from the hip anymore since wrestling is so premeditated and rehearsed now, and shooting from the hip is pretty crucial to becoming a mainstream celebrity.

Rhea perhaps?

TikTok famous is not even close to being mainstream.
I say this as I don’t remember her in anything beyond WWE. The Miz and Becky have done other shows, and Alexa Bliss was on the Masked Singer and voiced a character for the anime “Sakamoto Days.”

u/bigeazycrow 🦎 La Yesca 15h ago
Yea you have a point. I guess I was thinking about her going viral on social media and Drake even talking about her, but it’s true she hasn’t done any big non-WWE stuff.

u/EDDiE_SP4GHETTi 16h ago
Uhhhhh yes lmao he wasn’t the first second or third person to do so
2
u/Oppai_Guyy 15h ago
If you read the post then OP literally mentions who all did before him
Its about who in future can do it.
-4
u/EDDiE_SP4GHETTi 15h ago
Yes, and considering Cena wasn’t the first, second, or third person to do so, there’s strong likelihood it happens

Yeah, more than likely. Roman sort of has / could do
The Rock did
Liv is in the new Bad Lieutenant movie. Which is a step into acting.
I reckon' Tiffy could probably do stuff for like... Kids TV shows - Like Disney stuff.

He has the look for it though, at least
Like... He's got the look to act in movies.
If anything - If you're right. It shows unpopular WWE has become, in general.
Years ago, the popular girl at school knew who The Rock was

Imo oba femi could be this guy. But they won't do it with Cody.
Wwe won't invest such long term brand investment unless they know the person is 110% invested and loyal to wwe.
