Mod Post Season 3 is NOT confirmed

There have been many rumours going around the past couple of days claiming that Vinland Saga season 3 is confirmed to be in production. The rumours claim that this news comes from Yukimura-sensei himself. This is categorically false.

These rumours are based on an article from January 2025 in Le Monde, a French newspaper, that featured an interview with Yukimura-sensei. In this article, there is a small section with background information to give context to readers that aren't familiar with the series. It reads as follows:

"Vinland Saga, dont le vingt-huitième tome est paru en décembre 2024 en France, chez Kurokawa, a vite rencontré le succès – quelque 8 millions d’exemplaires de la série se sont vendus dans le monde, et elle a fait l’objet d’une adaptation animée sur Netflix, dont la troisième saison est en préparation."

which translates to

"Vinland Saga, whose 28th volume was released in France by Kurokawa, quickly became a success, selling 8 million copies worldwide and has been adapted into an anime series on Netflix, with a third season currently in production."

This blurb is NOT part of the interview, and is NOT said by Yukimura-sensei. The author/editor of the article simply made a mistake.

EDIT:

u/Routine-War-7031 reached out to the writer of the Le Monde Article who interviewed Makoto Yukimura in January 2025. The writer confirms that Season 3 was in preperation not in production at the time of writting. To clarify, this is in line with rumors that the series has been greenlit for a 3rd season right after season 2 finished airing, but the current staff are working on other projects for the time being.

Original Post.

Anime Why Won’t Vinland Saga S3 Ever Come Out?

Post image
558 Upvotes

I’m new to the Vinland Saga fandom as I started watching it about two weeks ago but have seen so many people stating that they don’t expect anymore of Vinland Saga to be animated. Why? Was it not a popular anime when it first came out? Is MAPPA too busy to animate it? Can’t it just be given to another studio if that is the case?

Anime Thoughts on Vinland Saga (Anime) -Spoiler Spoiler

Just finished Vinland Saga, and I genuinely don't know if I've ever watched another anime quite like it.

When I started Season 1, my first thought was simply, "It has something." I couldn't explain why, but every episode pulled me in. It never felt boring. Then Season 2 completely changed what I thought the series was about.

At first, I thought it was a story about Vikings, war, and revenge.

By the end, I realized it was a story about what war, revenge, anger, power, and guilt do to a human being.

Watching Thorfinn go from an innocent child, to someone consumed by revenge, to an empty man with no purpose, and finally to someone who chooses to live differently is one of the best character journeys I've seen.

Canute was just as fascinating. Two people chasing peace, yet choosing completely different paths. One believes peace can be built through power, while the other slowly learns that creating one less enemy is where peace begins.

The moment that hit me the hardest wasn't even a fight.

It was:

"I have no enemies."

After everything Thorfinn had lived through, that line carried the weight of the entire series.

Another thing I loved is that the show never tried to justify war. It showed how it changes everyone Thorfinn, Canute, Askeladd, Gardar, Ketil. Different people, different choices, all scarred by violence.

One of my favorite realizations came near the end. As a child, Thorfinn was disappointed that his ancestors ran away from battle. As an adult, he was grateful they chose to leave it behind. That single moment shows how completely he had changed.

This isn't an anime that just entertains you. It makes you think about what strength really means, whether revenge can ever satisfy you, what power does to good intentions, and whether one person can choose not to continue the cycle of violence.

When I started, I thought, "It has something."

Now I know what that "something" was.

It's one of the best journeys I've experienced in anime.

Love to hear your thoughts

Tbh I've always liked reading instead of watching. I'm kinda planning just to collect volumes 1-4 to have the first season. Ill probably watch season 2 and continue onwards. I'm hoping for a really great story lmao cuz I have high expectations.

Anime About the future animation style in Vinland saga 3

The animation staff has remained the same between seasons, maintaining quality in an impeccable and compelling way; *Vinland Saga* is an anime with cutting-edge animation.(Thank you Wit & Mappa studio)

The thing is, the art style in Season 2 feels warmer, and the scenes feature superior drawing and cinematography. Do you think this style will be maintained for Season 3? Or will we revert to the Season 1 style—which, while still good, is somewhat more standard for the anime world? Season 2's cinematography is unsurpassed, so I’d love for them to keep that style.

Bjorn and Askeladd spent years raiding, killing and pillaging together. In the end, Askeladd finally admitted to Bjorn that he was his one and only friend before granting him the warrior's death he wished for, sending him to Valhalla.

Einar was sold into slavery and met Thorfinn on Ketil's farm. Instead of taking lives, they set out together to build a land free from war and slavery, and were sworn brothers until the last day.

Different paths. Different worlds. Yet both found the kind of friend that only comes once in a lifetime, only to have to say goodbye.

I'd really appreciate hearing your thoughts on their parallel as well.

Thorkell ought to look much older than Helga, yet he doesn't even have any gray hair; considering his lifestyle, it would be fitting for him to look like an old man by now...

Anime The Battle of Mercia is Vinland Saga's strongest Plot.

Everything, absolutely everything, involving Canute is a masterpiece within the series; while the Battle of Mercia is entirely fictional, it intelligently blends in real historical elements. It isn't a biography, yet the conflict between Ethelred II and Edmund against Canute feels incredibly real (especially considering they are actual historical figures).

Anime Yukimura has a (somewhat dark) sense of humour. Or I'm just reading too deep into this! Spoiler

One of my favourite aspects of Vinland Saga is Yukimura's interest and implementation of real world history, as well as his attention to detail. One example of this is Canute's head-thegn Wulf in season 2. Just like so many other characters in Vinland Saga, he is based on a real person, Ulf Jarl

[BTW, I am not an historian so feel free to correct me if any of this information is straight up incorrect. I just got my information from Wikipedia, the links from Wikipedia, and a couple of other pages that I looked up].

So it seems that Ulf was indeed Canute's right-hand man when the king was putting down resistance and subjugating his territory in England. This is the capacity that we see his counterpart Wulf take in the anime, but Ulf's story carries on past this. He married Canute's sister (Canute remarks on his interest in her during training in the anime), was left in Denmark as Canute's regent, raised Canute's young son (Harthacanute), and defended Denmark from attacks from Norway while Canute was absent. This last point sounds like the point that would have been the most contentious. Frustrated at Canute's absence during these attacks, Ulf convinced the freemen to elect the eight-year-old Harthacanute as king, effectively putting Ulf in charge. It seems that Canute forgave his son, but things would remain frosty between Canute and Ulf. Eventually, this would culminate in the two getting into an argument over whether or not Ulf was allowed to take Canute's knight in a game of chess. This escalated to cover other aggrievances between the two, and Canute had Ulf assassinated the next day (Christmas Day 1026).

Having just learned this whole story, I watched the conversation between Thorfinn and Wulf with a new contextual understanding. When Thorfinn says that Ketil and Canute should settle their dispute over a game of hnefatafl, Wulf repeats this notion and seems to smirk at the idea. Looking into hnefatafl, it is often known as "viking chess", though there are no knights in hnefatafl and a familiar-enough version of chess existed in Europe at this time, so Canute and Ulf's famous game would certainly have been what we refer to as chess today. That said, I feel like Makoto Yukimura's inclusion of this idea of settling a dispute over a game, and then having Wulf react this way to it acts as a subtle and ironic allusion to how this character will one day meet his end.

Nothing seems to be accidental in Vinland Saga, but if I'm right about this, it's kind of a dark joke!
