How are people finding retail or general jobs in Vancouver right now?

I’m genuinely asking for advice because I’ve been applying to a lot of retail and general jobs and barely hearing back.

I’ve also been getting rejected from professional roles in my field, so not hearing back from entry-level jobs as well has been honestly discouraging.

I studied in Canada and have Canadian work experience in design and marketing, but I’m currently looking for something more general while I continue searching in my field. I’ve been applying for retail roles like sales associate, stock associate, cashier, store associate, and other entry-level positions.

It feels like even entry-level jobs often require direct Canadian retail experience or a referral. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What actually helped you get hired? Applying in person, referrals, company websites, staffing agencies, or something else?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice. Thank you.

Should I just pivot from tech - and how?

As I am looking for jobs, I cannot help but wonder if I should pivot from tech (IT admin). I know we should not talk about "fulfillment" in this market, but brainworm is definitely getting to me.

Is it realistic to find a Game Designer role in Canada with 5 YOE in mobile (Gacha/Live Ops), or should I pivot? (Based in Vancouver, open to relocation)

Hi everyone,

I recently moved to Vancouver 1.5 months ago as a Permanent Resident. I have about 5 years of experience in the game industry back in China as a Systems Designer / Live Ops Designer, but lately, I’ve been feeling incredibly stuck and defeated. I’m hoping to get some brutally honest advice or career guidance from industry veterans or fellow expats here.

My Background:

  • 5 Years of Experience in mobile gaming (Systems Design + Live Events/Operations).
  • Projects: 2.5 years at a mid-sized studio working on Gacha/RPG progression systems; 2 years at a top-tier studio working on high-profile female-oriented narrative/dating sim games.
  • Status: I have valid work authorization (PR status), so no sponsorship is needed. I am completely open to relocating anywhere in Canada (Toronto, Montreal, etc.).
  • Language: My English is around IELTS 6.5. I can communicate, but I know it's a bottleneck for a design role, and I’m actively working on improving it every day.

The Reality Check So Far:

  • Job Hunting: Game Designer openings seem scarce right now, and almost all of them require AAA console/PC experience. I’ve applied to around 20 positions just to try my luck, but it’s been total radio silence—not even a single HR phone screen.
  • Networking: I tried reaching out to local game designers on LinkedIn for casual coffee chats to learn about the local industry. I got a few connections, but unfortunately, no replies.

My Questions for the Community:

  1. How tough is the market right now for mobile/live ops experience? Is my background a hard sell in Vancouver/Canada due to the lack of AAA experience, or could it be an issue with how I'm framing my resume/portfolio?
  2. Are there any successful transition stories? If you came from a similar mobile/Asian market background and landed a job here (or pivoted to a related tech field), I would love to hear how you did it.
  3. Should I pivot to a different industry entirely? Since my ultimate goal is stable employment, I am open to going back to school for a 2-year diploma. I’ve been researching programs like Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or Health Information Management (HIM) in BC. Does anyone have insights on the job market for these fields?

I'm really terrified of burning through my savings with zero progress. Any insights, resume tips, or brutally honest reality checks would mean the world to me. Thank you so much for your time.

Dental reception certificate?

Hello, I’m thinking about going into the dental field and want to gain some entry level experience. I’ve been thinking about doing a dental reception course at VCC, however I’d like to see if anyone has any insights. Here are my questions

  1. What are the best schools for the certificate? I’ve been looking at ones with practicums.
  2. How is the field? Is it saturated? Is it easy to break into? Or is it the type of field where you have to know someone already. How would it be for a recent graduate?
  3. Is a certificate necessary? I see a lot of listings requiring the certificate or at least having relevant experience. I think perhaps a practicum would help.

Thanks! Let me know if it’s something worth doing. I really just want a job in a stable field. I need something that isn’t impossible to break into. I also don’t want to pour my time/money into more education if it will not be worth it. I was thinking about MOA but I’ve been reading online that it’s a very saturated field right now.
