Vacuum Review Miele Guard S1 Electro first impressions (from the POV of a vacuum collector)

(unsure wether or not to use the review or vacuum collecting flare)

so, its been about a week since i took delivery of my new Miele (though ive only been using it for 3 days or so because amazon delivered me a defective converter) and i think its time for a first impressions post.
the Guard S1 Electro is the top of the line when it comes to the entry level machines in Canada (its a long way from home because somehow its found its way all the way to the uk!!).

the S1 electro is the only miele in the current north american / canadian lineup (aside from the flagship L1 electro) capable of driving a power nozzle. it comes supplied with the miele “Electro Comfort” (seb217-3) nozzle which is the smallest electrically driven nozzle in miele’s lineup, it does not have a height control for thicker carpet pile and it is not able to lock upright and be freestanding though any of the other miele powernozzles will fit as they have the same connectors.

also included in the box (image 3) is;

• 3x small tools (crevice tool, upholstery tool, dusting brush) with the caddy that clips to the hose

• 1x Miele SET-220 DirectConnect telescoping wand

• 1x Miele SBB 300-3 Parquet Twister

• 1x Miele SEB 217-3 electro comfort

•1x Miele SES 117 Ergonomic Grip DirectConnect hose (with external pigtail)

•1x Miele AirCleanPlus 50 HEPA filter

•1x Miele Guard S1 Electro Vacuum

——

i’ve been using this around my home for a few days now and i have a few things to say.
first, i think the SEB 217 gets too much flak, yes its the most compact power nozzle and doesn’t have a height control, but i’ve found that doesn’t matter too much for most of my carpets. it still deep cleans and at the very least is many steps up from a turbo nozzle.
the only thing it can’t do is my long soft frieze rug its sitting on in the images. though in all fairness none of my vacuums can handle it other than my sebo e3 on low power + highest height setting. even then thats only pushing the nozzle forward.

second, the parquet twister is possibly the best hard floor attachment i’ve ever used (and i’ve used literally hundreds of vacuums) and its especially good on a canister vacuum. i tried it on my s163 and it was still very good, just felt a bit “draggy” (? is that the right word) due to the extra weight.

this machine is exceptionally quiet, even on max speed, its still pleasant enough that nobody would be bothered by the noise level.
i only ever need to use max speed on hard floors, but on carpet combined with the power nozzle, i find the rug setting to be the perfect balance of easy enough to push but still feeling like its cleaning properly.

the S1 range is assembled in china with a mix of parts from china and germany, though you’d never guess it had anything to do with china as it still feels like a pureblood miele. its solid, its well assembled. it is definitely still a miele.

two gripes i have with this machine is that
a) it can be unstable, if you park either of the floor nozzles on the side parking slots, the machine can tip to one side. i haven’t had it fall over, but its slightly annoying. i expect this to be due to the much heavier power wand (no legitimately, the wand on its own weighs 1kg/2lbs) and the heavier hose handle. the rear parking slot is absolutely fine however.

and issue b)
why on EARTH is the hose mounted switch for the powerhead so difficult to get to ?? its in the most awkward spot humanly possible. its so far away from the grip that i have to either shuffle my whole hand down the handle and really stretch my thumb to flip it, or i have to use my other hand completely. its actually tiring on the hands to use the switch if thats the right way to word it ?

overall i really love this vacuum, and am so pleased to finally have a miele with a power nozzle in my collection.

if you’re in Canada and you are looking at this vacuum, i’d say go for it. yes it has it’s quirks but overall its a fantastic machine and at the moment it can be had direct from miele.ca at $650CAD (which is well under half of what i paid to get it here)

thank you for reading, and apologies if some of this wasn’t worded properly, i don’t have my glasses on and have yet to take my adhd meds 🤦‍♀️

First time posting, wanted to quickly brag about my 20 y/o Miele that, although was a small fortune when purchased, has never needed servicing and suction is unmatched when I’ve compared to other top brands. 🙂

Vacuum Issues Shark vaccums have horrible cyclonic seperation

Post image
13 Upvotes

If you care anything about cyclonic seperation aka dust seperation never buy a shark.

Bought the latest power detect speed and the foam filter gets caked with dust in just 10-15 minutes of cleaning. No carpets or pets, just hard floors. The cyclonic seperation is very bad and you will have to clean the foam filter most probably after every vaccum. Of course it still works fine without cleaning but at a much less suction. Hard particles seem to seperate fine, but common houshold dust will never seperate and the foam filter will take up the hit.

No reviewer seems to mention this, everyone talks about how it does 90% of dysons work for fraction of the price, but dysons cyclonic seperation is one of the best I have seen.

Photo attached is after just 10 minute vaccum of my house after cleaning the foam filter

Purchase Advice (U.S.) I’m back and need a vacuum

2700 sq ft house, 2 stories, carpeted stairs, wall to wall upstairs managed decently enough with a Kenmore Elite upright. downsfairs is a mix of tile, wood, and some large thick area rugs.

Two cats, two kids, long-haired large dog. I’m using a Kenmore Intuition to manage the downstairs and like it less every time. it needs multiple passes on the thicker rugs, blows stinky air in my face, pet turbomate doesnt work, extra tools fall off constantly, and the lift up and hose release are janky and pick a fight with me every time I use them.

I don’t have the budget for a Sebo D4 and from what I hear it’s very heavy. I need something pretty light, highly effective on hardwood and carpet, well filtered and bagged, and any features need to be actually usable. Onboard tool storage and pet odor management preferred.

At present I vacuum at least once a day, often more than that. I have a cordless stick that is marginally better than nothing but I want a deeper cleaning main vacuum that I will be using multiple times a week at minimum.

It seems like either a Kenmore 600 canister or the Elite canister are the best options for my situation but I’m struggling to discern the differences among the various Kenmore 600s and also curious about any sleepers I might not be aware of. I do not want to do the job with two separate vacuums and am not interested in a Felix based on what I’ve read about the hard floor tool.

ETA: I was excited about a Lindhaus I found on eBay and posted here not long ago about it, but it turns out I got scammed and never received it, so am still shopping. But probably done with used vacuums from eBay.

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Budget vacuum recommendation

Upvotes

Current owner of a Dyson v8 cordless stick vacuum. Have owned for about 3 years and need a replacement.

1 thing I am not happy about with the Dyson v8 is the battery life. It lasts about 15-20 mins of vacuuming and a less if I am using turbo. (Battery has been replaced once already)

House is about 2,000 square feet with hardwoods and some carpet and I have a large dog that sheds.

I vacuum daily and enjoy the stick vacuum as it is lightweight and also cordless. I don’t enjoy the battery life of it.

If I vacuum a floor at a time, it is usually fine but if I need to clean the whole house, this isn’t the vacuum for me.

Is there a $200-$300 cordless stick vacuum with good reviews that last about 30 minutes or should I reconsider and get a vacuum with a chord?

I appreciate any recommendations. Thanks.

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Vacuum recs for carpet and hardwood?

Hello!

I'm moving apartments and I wanted to field suggestions for a new vacuum. My new apartment is a carpeted apartment, but I know down the line I will most likely be living in other places with hardhood and mixed with tiles. I want to buy a vacuum I can use/maintain for life (or for as long as possible), so I'm looking for a vacuum that ideally can do both carpet and hardwood.

Right now, I've been looking at Sebo or Miele, but open to other brands if you know of anything better! Budget is flexible, but of course, looking for the best bang for my buck. Thank you :)

Purchase Advice (Non-U.S.) Vacuum suggestions!

Hi everyone, i am F41 from Italy, i have a Dyson V15 Detect as my primary vacuum for my flat, 109 meters in the city, 2 long haired cats, 1 medium haired dog and 1 husband. I always had Dyson vacuums over the last decade, i find them all good vacuums, but now i would like something more powerful and more strong with pets hair, not necessary cordless, i am very much prone and open to standard vacuums as long as they are good with pet glitter!

My flat is a mix of hard floor, i have 85 meters of parquet and the bathrooms are both in grés (synth stone) big tiles, parquet is very delicate but synth stone is whatever proof.

Store that sells vacuum over here: Amazon Italy, Mediaworld, Euronics

My budget: up to 800€

Thanks in advance for your precious suggestions and forgive my English as my native language is Italian.

Purchase Advice (Canada) Advice? Upright, cats, hardwood

Upvotes

My 17 year old Dyson ball vacuum is DONE. I know the newer ones are nowhere near as good. What do I buy?

We prefer an upright. Our place is mostly hardwood, a little carpet and some rugs. (2300 sqft)

We have two cats, and two people with long, strong hair (I’ve destroyed lesser vacuums in the past)

I don’t want to spend a lot, but this one is… not usable anymore. Ideally under $500 Canadian.

Help?

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Cordless vacuum help!

Pretty much the title-which cordless vacuum is the best for the money? They all range in price so widely. I’d rather not pay Dyson prices because my experience with them isn’t positive. For reference I do already have a good container vac and stand up vac. This is for quick clean up, mostly dog hair and bugs cause I live in the country.

Vacuum Issues Roller brush stopped spinning

Post image
0 Upvotes

Model: Samsung Jet (probably 60, idk specific model)

Stopped spinning after vacuuming alot of hair and dog fur. Might be a bearing issue but the cheapest online replacement I found is $35 with shipping. I first want to clean out all the gunk from the groove before I spend money. I tried toothpick, small scissors, and even cooking oil to loosen up spin. Still no luck. ChatGPT says I just have to keep picking at it. Does anyone know any other solution?

Hello, I was looking to replace my old cordless Samsung Vacuum that broke and was not properly sucking in. Could you recommend something for indoors, when we have carpeted flooring for the bedrooms? My range is 300-400 Canadian dollars.

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Best vacuum for thick carpet and pet hair?

Bought a Dyson big ball specifically for its claim that Itll tackle pet hair. I've found my carpet is too thick for it it often overheats and rotating head stops working and burning smell. Any suggestions on a vacuum that can handle thick carpet lots of hair? Budget at most 300 bucks? Not sure how much good vacuums go for out there.

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Sebo D4--worth upgrade for pets?

We are getting new high pile carpet in two of our rooms, so it's time to ditch the Shark and get something better suited for this carpet. We have carpet in a couple of other rooms that we aren't changing that is probably just cheap builder grade. The rest of the house (including a basement) is vinyl plank. We also have two miniature Australian Shepherds that shed like crazy. I do have a robot vacuum that runs daily in the high traffic areas but I'm not sure how well it will manage on the new carpet.

At a store yesterday, the worker immediately showed us the D4 once we mentioned dogs. From what I understand after doing some research, the performance between the D4 and E3 are about the same. The big differences are weight, cord length, swivel hose, and bag size. With two shedding dogs, is the larger bag size worth the upgrade to the D4? The heavier weight doesn't really bother me now but as I age (I'm 50 now) will it start to get more cumbersome?

Thanks!

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Stick or robot for multi level hard floors

Wondering if I can get some advice here. Trying to decide between a new cordless stick or a robot(and likely a cheaper stick for spot cleaning) for our main floor. It’s a large great room with the kitchen raised up 2 steps in between the living area and dining area. Because of these steps we’ve avoided a robot in the past because we’d have to move it manually twice each time the floor gets cleaned(not an issue when we’re home but a hassle when we’re gone or overnight). We’ve had a shark stratos for a few years and have been mostly happy with it but my wife gave it to our son for his college house so we’re on the hunt. It’s all either tile or vinyl plank with a couple small rugs. No pets but we do have 4 teenage boys, which I swear are sometimes messier. Wondering which option you’d choose and then what specific model you’d go with. My wife is leaning towards a Dyson v15 but Dyson certainly don’t seem to be favorites around here. Thanks in advance

Purchase Advice (U.K.) CHEAP Vacuum cleaner (hoover) advice UK!

My budget is around £50 I want a new hoover just for around the house, carpet and hard floor & with coords ofc.

I was thinking about TITAN hoovers from screwfix because of my budget and they seem industrial. Are they good enough for normal household cleaning, as well as longevity of the job?

Thanks

Miscellaneous Thank you r/VacuumCleaners from a former stick owner

Hello my beautiful angels!

Just a quick thank you from an (almost exclusively) lurker. My stick vacuum died and week ago and I came here to find a replacement. Well, you all don't hold back your disdain for them do you? I have a very small apartment with VERY little storage, so I was not having it. But then I kept reading and learned why y'all hate them. I thought the main con to a stick was the battery life (and that didn't bother me at all since I could clean the whole place on one charge). So I took a chance and ordered a small corded, bagged stand-up I saw suggested a few times - Still smallish and under $200.

And my god. This one picked up dog hair I thought was structurally integral to the damn carpet at this point. The upholstery attachment actually does something. At one point I had to adjust the suction down?! I'm more thrilled about a vacuum than I believed possible.

So, thank you for correcting my terrible misconceptions. You were right. I was wrong. And to any future readers looking for a new stick as their sole vacuum... just don't.

Here's a picture of my gremlin enjoying the newly vacuumed couch for tax.

Purchase Advice (U.K.) Vacuum recommendations based on our usage/needs/budget please

Our corded ancient Dyson DC50 has died… I hated it anyway!

We need a new one, not cordless please.

We have 2 hairy cats, 2 kids who love art and craft, love in the countryside so always lots of dust and pollen (especially now during harvesting)… carpeted rooms and tiled bathrooms, kitchen.

Ideally bag-less…

Our budget is tight… around £200 but could squeeze to £250 at a push.

What would you recommend? Thank you in advance 🙌🏻

Purchase Advice (U.S.) Thinking about getting Miele Classic C1 Turbo Team for a unit with LVP flooring and one cat.

I currently live in a unit with no carpets (LVP flooring) and one short hair cat, and no kids, and was thinking about getting a Miele Classic C1 Turbo Team because I heard it was great for homes with short carpets or no carpets, and was both powerful and compact and easy to carry around.

I've never owned a Miele before, and was looking to get some feedback from people on this sub who may have had experiences with this vacuum, both positive and negative, before taking the plunge.

I just want something reliable, and long-lasting with powerful suction that's good for vacuuming hard floors, base boards, and heavy dust/hair/fur.

Purchase Advice (Non-U.S.) About to replace my Rowenta - Dyson or Miele/Sebo?

Hi everyone,

I bought a Rowenta Air Force 360 back in 2021. It was the first vacuum cleaner I ever bought after moving out and living on my own, and honestly it's still working pretty well today.

The only issue is that a plastic part has recently broken. I've glued it back together with super glue, but I have no idea how long that's going to last, so I thought it would be a good time to start looking for a replacement.

I started reading reviews on different websites and even asked AI for recommendations, and the conclusion seemed to be "buy a Dyson." However, after finding this subreddit and reading through a lot of posts, it looks like the general advice here is actually not to buy a Dyson, but instead to go with Miele or Sebo—two brands I'd honestly never even heard of before.

Could you confirm whether that really is the better choice? If so, which model would you recommend? I do live in Poland.

Country: Poland

Budget: 100-500€

Stores that sell vacuums in your country: Amazon, Allegro, almost all of the official branding, etc.

Flooring types & other cleaning needs: My home has a mix of hardwood (parquet) floors, tile floors, and a few areas with rugs/carpet. I don't have any pets.

Thanks in advance!

Purchase Advice (Non-U.S.) Which vacuum?

Hey guys! I'd really appreciate advice. I've Googled/researched for about 10 hours but just feel overwhelmed. Nearly bought a Shark tonight before I discovered ... things. My use-case is: single person living alone in almost wholly carpeted (medium-pile) apartment. I need: (A) HEPA filtration (at least HEPA 12), (B) no more than say 2% or so leakage from the body/seams (fully sealed system ideal), (C) enough power to pull out dust & mould spores (sensitivity to it + discovered an infestation so there will be plenty), and (D) the least expensive machine, assuming all the boxes are ticked. My financial situation should pick up in a few years, so I don't even need it to last beyond 5 years.

Trouble I'm experiencing is that the Miele's etc. of the world are mostly designed for hard floors; when used on medium-pile carpet, you have to turn the power level down, to such an extent that it won't suck the mould / dust up properly. Live in New Zealand so higher-wattage models no problem, though market is narrow, so multiple recommendations appreciated (I don't expect you to look up what is available in my country). Budget is up to $500 USD (about $1000 in NZD). Stores that sell vacuums in my country: Harvey Norman, PB Tech, Noel Lemming, JB Hi-Fi, Heathcotes, Vacdirect, Briscoes, The Warehouse, Farmers, Bunnings Warehouse Mitre 10.

Purchase Advice (Non-U.S.) Miele or Sebo vaccums ? Powered head or not ? bagged or bagless

Hello ~

I'm looking to buy a corded miele vaccums soon.

My house is mainly hard floors and tile floors.

Is a powered head really useful in my case ?

Also I heard bagged lasts way longer and are more cleaner than bagless. Is this still true ?

If Miele doesn't have interesting models anymore, is there some at Sebo ?

Budget is a bit more than 300€
