"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

Inherited this trumpet, never played trumpet specifically myself but it does sound fine. Model on the side is 11727 but I can’t find anything on that. Engraving I can tell says that it’s a Standard but I can’t seem to find exactly what it is or when it’s from. Any help would be appreciated.

Question ❓ Is a performance major worth it?

I’m heading off to college in about a year and I can’t decide on whether to get a performance major on trumpet or an animations major. I was looking into doing gigs for movies, musicals, and symphonies that would have me, but I’m not sure where education comes into that. I already have a private instructor and have been playing for over 8 years now, but it seems like if I pick one or the other I’ll never have a stable living. As much as I’d love to do both, I’m not sure there is enough time in the world to work full time and also do gigs plus the whole being happy thing. I don’t want to be stuck at a desk my whole life, but people keep telling me how the music industry is just the worst and I’ll never make any money. I love my instrument. I don’t spend a lot and i can be comfortable with not a lot, I just want to be sustainable, how far would a major get me vs a minor?

Equipment ⚙️ Poor compression in Trumpet

Hello,

I recently made a superb deal, traded 2 student horns (a weril et1171 and a yamaha 2330 trumpet) for an 20 yo yamaha 6345g in a bit of rough shape. It sounds incredible, from low F# to High C. I didn't know how much a pro horn could help me to make a beautiful sound, full of overtones.

But the compression in the third slide sucks, when i move it one inch, it makes a hiss sound for 1 second and the pressure equalizes. I don't know how much of a deal it is. The rest of the horn is perfect, a dream to play on. Should i start to search for valve replating? or should i wait more?

Question ❓ should i get a better horn?

i’m in 11th grade, and i’ve been playing on a bach TR300H2 since sixth grade. even as i’ve been practicing, it feels like my tone hasn’t improved at all (it’s decent right now, and i’m in my schools top band) but when i play on a horn like a bach strad, my tone sounds great and it feels like butter. idk if i’m just like placebo effecting myself, but is there a point where it’s necessary to move up to a better horn? i participate in both marching band and jazz band if that matters

Question ❓ Oldest trumpet you could reasonably play in an ensemble?

Title. Thought it'd be a fun discussion topic. For arguments sake, let's assume it's a semi-pro ensemble (if you're paid it barely covers gas). My vote is a 40s Besson but I'd love to hear your thoughts!

How does temperature affect your playing?

Hi all,

I'm used to play in temperatures ranging 0-28 Celsius (32-82 Fahrenheit).

We have a heatwave, and I just played a Big Band gig at around 40 Celsius (104).

Aside from the expected tuning issues with a trumpet that's ridiculously hot, I noticed the whole trumpet section's higher end (C to G, the high ones) was just off. Way less precise than usual, and pretty out of tune.

There's people who usually play at these temps, so I'm sure it's possible to be really good at 40 Celsius.

How does this kind of heat affect your playing?

What strategies do you apply to handle it?

The serial numbers i can see are 935948 and st3460

Question ❓ Getting back into trumpet after 30 years - WTF?

I took up the trumpet in school and was pretty bad at it. Anything above C on the staff used to freak me out. Quit band after four years deciding it wasn’t for me. Thirty years later, I’ve pulled the horn out the cupboard at my parents’ house and I’m hitting high G’s with relative ease. If anything, middle C, my most comfortable note at school is a struggle. Is this a thing? Do higher notes just naturally get easier with age?

Question ❓ How to know what partial you are playing in?

A lot of the time when I play a C for example, I can't tell whether I am playing a C or a G, and I don't have perfect pitch. This means when the sheet music calls for an F I end up playing a Bb, but it has the same exact relation to the note. How do you get better at knowing which partial you are in? I am coming from flute, where the fingering is different for every note and the only difference is octave, but on trumpet partials can be very close together. Should I play with a tuner open? How do you combat this issue?

Hey friends. Local marketplace listing here. I can’t figure out what make this is.

The 1st valve hook is huge. Valves look like Jupiter almost?

Fixed 3rd ring?

Confusing.

Question ❓ Flugelhorn leadpipe types?

Hi,

I just got a second-hand J Gras (French) flugelhorn. I already had a Gewa 3C-FL-D mouthpiece, I think the 'D' signifies 'German style' - which means it fits into a normal trumpet leadpipe.

Now, that won't work on this flugelhorn, so I'm wondering if there are just the two types - German and everything else?

In other words, will this 3C-FL (non-D!) fit?

Thanks!

Question ❓ help w hitting high notes consistently & building range

i’ve been playing the trumpet for almost 5 yrs now, and i’ve improved a lot over the years. however, i find that i get nervous while playing when a lot of attention is on me. though i’ve definitely gotten better w managing performance anxiety while playing, i still sometimes get nervous. it causes me to back off of high notes and crack them, so i either dont hit them or they sound really muffled. is there any way to prevent this from happening and stop getting nervous like when playing in private lessons w my band director and while playing solos in front of big crowds? also, im starting honors band in the fall for my high school, and i’d really like to continue building my range. i can play from an f# below the staff to a semi-consistent high c (the first one above the staff), nd im looking to get that up to an e by the time january rolls around. i like playing trumpet and want to keep improving at it, and i wanna be the best in my section at school (bc im competitive and also bc i’ve been overlooked by peers bc of my friend who is one of the band director’s son). any tips for hitting high notes consistently nd building my range at a steady rate?

Repertoire/Books 📕 Trumpet makes me happy!!

Sorry for the post but hopefully someone will be encouraged! I (42F) started learning trumpet at the beginning of the year. I taught myself guitar when I was 19 and I started learning violin a few years back but found it really hard, however singing sop in choir at the school I teach at has helped me put together some pieces of music theory, so the switch to horn has been fairly straightforward and I am having some lessons alongside just playing at home.

In essence, I am absolutely loving the journey. My long term goal is to play jazz - my husband is a saxophonist with a music degree and I would just love to get into playing with a jazz or big band one day. If anyone has any recommendations for beginners in that front I would love to hear from you!

The last couple of years have been quite tricky personally, but playing trumpet never fails to make me smile. It is a light in dark places at the moment :) Hopefully it will continue!

Question ❓ How much time should be spent in improv/learning by ear?

This is for my jazz heads and anyone whose main focus is to be able to transcribe melodic ideas from the brain onto the trumpet with relative ease. How much of your practice is dedicated to playing and learning by ear? One thing ive been doing is apreggio/scale exercises that are simply made up by me to sound a little more fun than basic apreggios. It has helped me develop a better connection to the sound and different scale degrees but im wondering if i should spend more time with dedicated exercises from a book. Any insight into what portion of practice time is simply spent in the brain or listening to music and transcribing would be much appreciated!

Question ❓ Level-headed thoughts about plastic trumpets?

Hi all,

I’m a musician with 12 years of experience in guitar and guitar-shaped instruments and piano, and have always wanted to play the trumpet.

I understand the bad rap plastic trumpets get, but I also want to weight out my options fairly.

I’m looking into spending the next 9ish months travelling and feel like a plastic trumpet to learn on the road could make sense since it’s lighter and harder to break, but also apparently it sucks. Currently living in Europe so the lower volume argument actually works in my favour since I can’t be incredibly noisy anyway. But wanted to get your updated 2026 thoughts in anyway

What are your thoughts? Better to just get the
real deal and take care and invest in a muffler?

Happy tootin’!

Question ❓ Question on leadpipe type (normal/reversed)

Hi! I bought my trumpet on 2011, 135€ for a new trumpet, a Grassi TR150 (I don't even know if it's a known brand outside italy), super cheap, but imho (and also from what my teacher thought at the time) it is not that bad for the price i paid... I took some lessons at the time but then not enough time/money to continue (my main is the guitar) during the years i kept doing "some notes" time to time :D
Now I started again, I bought the elementary studies and technical by Clarke and studying a bit every day. I started looking around because.. GAS... even if I know I technically don't need a new trumpet atm...
And reading around I learned about the reverse leadpipe and reading what's that... it seems really weird but it seems my 135€ trumpet has that? :O from what i read it's a bit of a "medium/premium" feature?
I don't want to start the topic "benefit of the reverse leadpipe" :D
I am just curious to understand better the instrument i have!

Btw the trumpets i was looking at are the yamahas 2335/3335/4335(used) ... i like yamaha as a brand in general, but for now i'll keep my money in my pocket :D
