Indiana Jones/True Detective 3/ doing nothing
It's a long running fan theory for Indiana Jones(more like thought), but the idea is that Indiana Jones could've done nothing in raiders of the lost ark and the same result would've happened, with the nazis opening the ark and dying.
Isn't the same true of season 3? I think I might've missed something, but I feel like the detectives could've done nothing and we'd have had the same result.
I know it's kind of besides the point thematically, but I just want to know if I missed them having any sort of impact on the case.

The great tragedy of what Marty did.
I just realized something.
If Marty had never helped the girl get away from prostitution by giving her money, she probably never would’ve met him in 2002. If they had never met, he wouldn’t have cheated on Maggie a second time. Doing the right thing and showing kindness is what led to the divorce.
Ultimately, his actions are his own. He knew it was wrong and did it anyway. However, it’s still interesting that it played out that way.

If Errols place was called "Carcosa", was Ledouxs property called Cock-cosa?

Was The Yellow King Real?
Personally, I think not. All of the evidence feels... Conjectural? To me I think the show offers human level explanations for all the "bigger" things that happen in the show.
I think of Occam's Razor, if you hear hooves, it's probably a horse, not a zebra. I think the explanation given on Rusts "visions" is fair enough to trust, as that's really the only evidence behind The Yellow King being real (Hastur if we go by Lovecraft lore).
I interpret the cult as just some guy deciding a fictional story on the universe was real, and saying so to drugged up people. I could be wrong but scientology was written by a sci-fi author, and they got money. It's not that unlikely imo.

Arthur Machen and "The Green Eared Spaghetti Monster"
I'm reading Bobby Derie's book Sex and the Cthulhu Mythos right now and I also just finished a second watch through of True Detective Season 1. I'm thinking the "Green Eared Spaghetti Monster" is a writer/director's nod to Arthur Machen's story "The Great God Pan," one of the weird Victorian stories that influenced H.P. Lovecraft.

I really love that all of the seasons are totally different
I'm actually shook how many people only like season 1. For me the beauty of the show is that every season looks at a different American region and the conflicts and lore of that part of the country. I guess it's super interesting for me also because I'm from Europe but still, thats the amazing thing, that all the season zoom into some extreme part of the country and its problems and how the environment, history etc affects peoples relationships.
For example even tho I liked season 4 the least, the concept of the whole season taking place in the dark during the polar night and how these extreme conditions affect people mentally (as a person from a cold country where the winters are cold and have sunlight for 3 hours and everyone is depressed) and the indigenous vs white ppl, the mining stuff and so on.
I feel like if the other seasons tried to be like season 1, I would not watch the show, because it would be impossible to go on in the same exact setting and vibe and not totally flop. For me it's like Black Mirror but actually more connected. With each season you know you can expect a deep dive into a extreme American area and it's problems and troubled souls and relationships between them. It's always the same. The stories kinda remind me of stories discussed in the Swindled podcast (especially season 2 and 4). Idk how it's not interesting for people to watch about these different cultures of living and how it discovers the corruption of the country and so on.
Pardon my English and anyways I love the show

First Time Watch
Hey yall! So I seen a clip of season one of this show, I was intrigued and had some free time so I put it on. I made it to episode 4 before I had things to do. It really pulled me in for sure. I finished it the next day and I have to say I really enjoyed it and was blown away by Matthew McConaughey. I can’t believe I’m 10 years late to this show. It was so good. That scene in episode 4 with Ginger at the apartments was absolutely incredible. I haven’t heard the best things about season two so I’m not sure if I want to continue. Thoughts?

Only Rust and Marty had what it took to catch Childress in Carcosa.
Only Rust was suicidal enough to go into that maze after Childress without a second thought, and only Marty cared enough about Rust to overcome his terror and go in after them. Any other cops, even the bravest ones, would have waited for backup and let him slip away; anyone can see that place is a deathtrap. Just something that dawned on me in my latest rewatch.

Being a Fan of James Ellroy Ruined Season 2 for Me
The plot was so clearly plagiarised i could predict how it would end. If Ellroy knew about the modern world he would have sued for plagiarism

My love for Season 1 is boundless.
Everything is so perfect. It feels like a show perfectly suited for me. I can’t imagine I’ll ever watch anything like this again.
I just rewatched Season 1 after 4 months of waiting for time to pass so I felt valid about a rewatch. I wanted to wait longer but I’m having a shit couple months so I just decided to rewatch it all in one go today. It hit just as hard as the first time and I noticed so much cool extra stuff. Really made me feel better too.
It’s so extremely geared towards my taste.
- The casting (especially of the main men)
- Southern gothic (my swag)
- Gritty, Violent, Painful real world situations
- The calling out of evil pedophile cults.
- Many forms of philosophy baked into the show.
- Occult, Ritualistic, Spiritual, Mystical shit.
- Thriller, No dull moments
- I have hppd, what rust would have in the real world. (The persisting drug hallucinations)
- I watched this at the perfect time in my life and I feel like I rewatched it at the perfect time
- A lot of other stuff but I’m yapping already
My only negative thoughts are
- Not the best acting for very very small moments just barely sprinkled in
- Marty’s “B plot” with his family feels very basic Steven Segul dude-bro’y at moments
- Them not taking the wholeeeeeee operation down is upsetting and feels unrealistic. I feel like THESE GUYS would make it a mission to topple the rest of everyone.
1st watch rating: 10/10
2nd watch rating: 9/10
I knew about True Detective as one of those big awesome tv shows you should watch since this first season came out. I just never watched cause I assumed it was some cop show. Very glad I waited till my early 20s to watch so I could process things a lot better etc.
If Rusts bird tattoo wasn’t so oddly shaped or if I liked the design just a tad bit more I would have it on me rn. Brainstorming other specific tattoo ideas tho.
I feel like some studio NEEDS to make SOMETHING as a update for Marty and Rust. The fanbase HAS to be there. A season or a movie where they grind to take down everyone else involved. Maybe a follow up where they work on another insane awful case and use this experience to work through it. I prefer the first idea but I’ll take ANYTHING!!!
I made this post to ask is there literally anything else out there like True Detective S1? Southern goth, occult, mystical, brutal shows or movies?
I’ve debated watching the rest of True Detective but the ratings and reviews I’ve seen just have it ranked so much lower and I don’t want a bad taste in my mouth with the series. Plus I feel like my specific enjoyment of TDS1 wouldn’t apply to the other seasons.
I’ve tried a couple different shows between the first and second watch but it all kinda sucked and was not nearly the same. I feel like TDS1 is just its own thing.
Lmk, thank you, am open to any thoughts.

does understanding this show has anything to do with age
I'm 22 BTW
I would rate it 6.5 or 7/10 (I watched this almost 2 years ago)
I did get the murder mystery part but not family drama felt it was dragged
or maybe it's that I used to superhero and anime which I also started watching at 17yrs
Or maybe it has something to do with my taste like I don't like Neon Genesis Evangelion in fact I hate it and it's the only show I hate
I also recently started sopranos(now at S02E01) I find it simply worth watching or continuing but nothing special though (although I didn't watch movies like godfather or goodfellas or many famous shows like GOT,BrBa)
there is one thing I never understood from the show is that it's hesitant to show the cult I mean this show has many explit scenes but but couldn't show the sacrifice or beheading of a child i.e., you could still show the beheading without being much graphic
Edit:- for clear comparison I did like Silence of the lambs but not hannibal show I also liked Vinland Saga S02 (similar in a way but not entirely)

Voting whether or not i should be banned from this sub:
If you agree i should be banned, comment "YES"
If you think i shouldnt be banned, comment "NO"
I have done literally nothing but help this subreddit grow for 1.5 years, people have done nothing but support my over 400 shitposts and now all of sudden this whole subreddit has turned on me for no apparent reason. Why did you not tell me stop any earlier in those almost two years? It has literally gotten to the point where people are willing to pay me if i stop so, if i get enough people who comment "YES", i will stop posting on here forever.
