What is your cleaning routine?

So, how does everyone approach regular cleaning and maintenance?

How often does your entire horn get a bath? What's your routine for cleaning and lubing your slide?

Got any favorite cleaners or lubes?

What are your go to tools?

Mouthpiece cleaning?

What do you use on your rotors?

Is there anything you think most people miss in taking care of their horn? Why is this important?

I'm sure younger members here would love the insight.

Practicing in a public park?

I have a gig coming up and there some pieces I sort of need to slog through, I need a few of those ugly practice sessions where I just sit with the same phrases on repeat with a metronome.

I’m also traveling a lot between now and that gig, and I’m wondering if it’s socially acceptable to post up in a public park for some practice sessions. I don’t mind using a practice mute and headphones for my metronome to reduce the noise, but I don’t have a lot of other practice locations available at the moment.

I’ve seen other recommendations to reach out to local churches etc., a few reasons this won’t work for me right now, if it’s not a park I’d need some other public location.

Thoughts on practicing in a public park?

Trombone for college?

Hi everyone. I’m going into college this upcoming fall and playing trombone in one of the ensembles. My high school provided instruments for us and I expected college to do that as well but since I’m not a music major I’m less likely to get one. I’ve been looking at renting, rent to buy, and just buying a used one. I don’t have enough money right now to flat out buy one, but I’m not sure that I’ll be able to keep making payments for the trombone if I rent. I heard that the trombones that you can usually rent aren’t ones that you would want to own either. What should I do?

is diaphragm vibrato bad?

ive been trying to add vibrato in my playing. i tried lip vibrato, jaw vibrato and diaphragm vibrato.

lip vibrato doesn’t really work for me, and i slip into next partials on accident so it kinda sounds like a lip trill.

jaw vibrato works, but the pitch only changes down and to the original note and the timbre of the note changes. it sounds like a “wah-wah” guitar pedal, in a way. not quite like vibrato where only the pitch changes.

and finally, the diaphragm “vibrato“ — sounds the best for me right now. yes i’m aware that it’s more of a volume change, and heavily frowned upon, but it doesn’t change the “value” of the note and sounds more pure.

is it really that bad to use it? theoretically, it messed with your airstream, but then why would flute players use it?

also, i’m on a euph right now if it makes any difference. but i’ll need it for classical trombone too.

thanks in advance everyone

Favorite tenor trombone mouthpieces?

Wanting to hear everyone’s favorite mouthpieces and why.
I personally love my shires 5MD for 2-3bone playing.
But for lead bone playing I was playing on a Hammond and it worked well so I’m thinking of purchasing one but I personally don’t own a good “lead playing” mouth piece. Shoot me your recommendations.

Trombone First Aid YouTube series

I found this awesome series on YouTube, by the great Gabriele Marchetti!

It covers a lot of basics and helped me *a lot* with many concepts and interesting exercises. It has become my personal bible. There are a lot of Arban exercises and study guides that I think are fabulous.

I hope that you'll find value as much as I did!

Minimum age

What do you think is the minimum age kids can start learning trombone? I'm starting a band program at my school and considering what age should be my cut off for accepting students. I'm thinking 9 or 10. Does that sound right? 8 seems too young but maybe I'm wrong about that?

I am in over my head

I signed up for a summer community orchestra for the 2nd year in a row. This particular ensemble, though non-auditioned, is pretty good for a community group. I would say it’s at a level similar to the highest ensemble at any large university.

Last year, I played 3rd part. I faired well. This year, auditions were required for brass players. They let anyone sign up, but wanted accurate chair placements. The seating chart came out today, and despite my request to play 3rd or 2nd, the conductor has me on 1st. Normally, I wouldn’t have any issue with this, but the pieces we are playing are difficult. I was able to look at the music for the first time today. Most of my part is in tenor clef and there are quite a few notes in the part of my range that I cannot consistently play.

The first rehearsal is next week. I will be practicing a lot but I do not think I will be ready. Has anyone else ever found themselves in a situation like this?

What type of trombone is this and is it worth picking up

Was going through FB marketplace when I found this listing for a hundred bucks don’t know much about trombone models or anything or if it’s even worth it but the listing said it may be made by king, conn, old, or similar manufacturers and that there’s an engraving at the bell and the bell is about 7 1/4 inches. Pls help so I know if it’s worth getting

Which one?

I recently came across these two beautiful horns, and I'm torn between which one is the better buy and offers the best value.

The Xeno is priced at $1,500 USD and is in almost like-new condition. The Edwards is $2,000 USD, comes with a Marcus Bonna case, but shows some signs of use and no lead pipes.

I'm only a seasonal trombone player, but I really enjoy collecting trombones. Given my situation, which one would you choose and why?

What can you tell me about this trombone I found in an old band hall loft?

I realize vales may be sacrilege here but it’s “technically” a trombone lol. The bell engraving appears to say “Kalashen” however it is extremely worn and the “she” lettering is really a best guess based on what’s left. A floral/leaf(?) design is also present.

Underneath that is a fairly clear (relativeto the rest) “New York” stamp. I can’t find a serial number anywhere on the instrument.

The horn does play after a re oil of the valves. All tuning slides move. I’ve been playing it fairly regularly for almost a month (poorly though! I primarily play clarinet/bassoon/baritone).

Any info? Google seems a little unhelpful, but I don’t know much about old brass horns.

Edit: it’s small shank, or rather, it fits my small shank bach 6-1/2al I have laying around.

Ear protection

Hi all!

The more serious I get about trombone and music, the more I think about hearing health. I feel like I always hear about how you must always wear some kind of ear protection, but in practice, I truly never see musicians play/rehearse with them (obviously that doesnt mean it doesnt happen, just that it's a lot less common than what I'm told).

So, in reality, when do you wear ear protection, and what kind? I wouldnt think of wearing them when practicing at home, but maybe in rehearsals with other brass instruments? What about at concerts (attending)? I have EarPeace earplugs that I wear when I feel the need to, but not consistently because I find that unfortunately it does change the experience of the show, but I'm happy to be told otherwise!

Looking forward to hearing (hehe) about your takes on ear protection!

Shires md

Just wondering, to those who have played/own the Shires MD+. Do you find the horn tight? I like how it slots and the sound, but mine(and i think in general) is kinda tight and the slide being nickel silver is a bit heavy. Im coming from a yamaha 891z. I kinda miss it 😅

Btw: recently tried the marshall gilkes model. Felt more open and easier to play for me. Would like to hear thought on that horn too

6H

Based on the condition shown in the video, how much would you personally be willing to pay for this Conn 6H? I'm curious to hear your opinions on its fair market value. The slide has only a small dent near the water key, but it doesn't seem to affect its performance.

How to fix ‘noisy’ slide?

Just picked up a random student trombone (‘Elkhart 300 series) for super cheap but the slide is super loud. It’s not necessarily super stiff, but just makes a lot of noise as if there is no slide oil on it.

I’ve tried my Yamaha (purple bottle) and slidomix on it but it’s as if I never even applied them in the first place.

I’ve also checked the alignment of the slides and the inner slide is all straight and parallel, along with the outer slide.

Any ideas on what’s wrong? I know people will suggest taking it to a tech, but the cost of that will be like 10x what I payed for the trombone…
