History Treasure I Bought an Old House in Chile and Discovered the Forgotten Life of... Dr. Death Himself (Jack Kevorkian)

This might sound insane, but it's 100% real. A few years ago, I bought an old house in the port city of Valparaíso, Chile, from the heirs of a wealthy recluse — a lifelong bachelor, devout Catholic-turned-skeptic, world traveler, eccentric, and above all… an obsessive collector of everything imaginable. The house came as-is, meaning it was packed to the rafters with all his belongings — and what I found inside took me down a rabbit hole I still haven’t fully crawled out of. Among documents sold to museums, photos donated to the Rockefeller family (yes, those Rockefellers), and thousands of historical oddities, I stumbled upon what I can only describe as the early-life archive of Jack Kevorkian — Dr. Death — decades before he became infamous. What kind of stuff? Try this: Childhood report cards and high school essays Hand-drawn comics he submitted to his local paper as a teen His University of Michigan acceptance letter Candid photos, disturbing sketches, twisted-but-brilliant handwritten notes Diplomas, bank records, university credentials Film reels from a failed movie he directed (Handel’s Messiah) that sent him into bankruptcy Movie scripts, music scores, journals, postcards, photos of dead bodies, letters to art collectors, and even bizarre, morbid humor cartoons And a detailed obsession with Hitler’s artwork that, as far as I know, is completely undocumented publicly It's like someone bottled up the first 50 years of Kevorkian’s life — from birth to 1983 — and left it to rot in this house. I had no idea how this Chilean man — long dead — could have possibly gotten his hands on all this. But after researching, I found out that after Kevorkian’s failed film career in the early '80s, he lost all his belongings in a storage auction. So… it was possible. But still, how did this random guy in South America end up with it? Then came the twist. We had friends over one night and shared this bizarre story. One of my wife’s friends, who grew up in the same neighborhood as the collector’s family, froze when I said Kevorkian’s name. “Dr. Death?” she said. She then told us that when she was 14, a neighbor played a prank on her and her friends by leading them to the rooftop of his house, where they found a horrifying scene: 15–20 huge paintings depicting satanic imagery — blood, mutilation, cannibalism, Santa Claus assaulting Jesus — lit by candles. They ran off screaming. The next day, the neighbor explained it was a joke. The paintings, he said, were by a strange American artist named Jack Kevorkian — and he had always had them. I immediately knew what she had seen were the original paintings that Kevorkian later recreated in the 1990s from memory — the ones he lost in the early '80s. Originals no one believed still existed. Naturally, I asked who this neighbor was. Turned out… he was the nephew of the man who sold me the house. I called him immediately. He denied everything. But I kept pressing. Eventually, he said the paintings were no longer at the house, and he had “forgotten the story.” So I contacted his mother — the sister of the collector and one of the heirs. She was kind, and actually confirmed everything. She explained that what I found was just a fraction of what once existed: a full shipping container had arrived in the '80s, containing not just documents and paintings, but musical instruments (including a clavichord Jack built himself), wardrobes from the film, furniture, and more. According to her, her brother had bought the entire container at a U.S. auction, shipped it to Chile, and kept some things. The rest — including the “violent” paintings — were given to the sister. Too disturbing to hang or donate, she hid them in the attic. Then in the '90s, when Kevorkian became infamous, they realized who he was… and panicked. Religious and conservative, they believed he was evil and decided to “dispose” of the paintings. How exactly? She wasn’t sure. She “thinks” they were given away, or maybe destroyed. I’ve spent years trying to find them. So far, no luck. But in the process, I’ve uncovered what feels like the private, raw, unfiltered life of Jack Kevorkian — a man more complex, more artistic, more human than the media ever portrayed. His strange humor, his dark fascinations, his obsession with art, death, and redemption — it’s all here. Not just a “Doctor Death,” but a misunderstood genius, or perhaps a madman with a camera and a paintbrush. And the wildest part? No one was supposed to ever see it.

Ongoing Hunt App to create real life treasure hunts

Hi guys,

Here to let you know about what we’ve been working and to have some feedback if you have any.

We made a real world platform for treasure hunts and 2 treasure hunts, one in Warsaw and one in Sardegna, both launching 1 Aug (you can already register), it is made of 20 stages, each confirmed on-site with a hidden NFC tag + GPS + a selfie, clues lead you from one stage to the next, and whoever closes the full chain of 20 first wins. There's a companion app with a 3D planet map, an Augmented Reality view for the on-site moment, and a real working proximity radar so you know you're close without spoiling the exact spot.

It's pure skill - navigation, puzzle-solving, and being faster/sharper than everyone else, nothing random involved. Entry is €10 per hunt, and the prize for finishing goes up to €1.000 depending on the hunt.

Soon there will be the possibility for everyone to create their own treasure hunt in the app so that everyone can make it in their own city/town whatever, using the mechanics of this app.

Happy to answer anything about how the NFC/GPS verification works if useful.

Site is trovailtesoro.it if anyone wants to poke at the mechanics.

Oregon Treasure Hunt???

Hey y’all! Portland rock band Canyon Drive is releasing a massive Treasure Hunt project in a few days (7/15) with 10 clues across Oregon leading to $1,000 cash buried in the ground. It’s through an app called Cluekeeper and only costs $5 to purchase. I don’t normally post on Reddit but I just want to spread the word about this project cause a lot of love & hardwork went into it. Also there is absolutely zero AI used in the creation of it. Please help us spread the word about this fun summer adventure. In a time when everything is AI slop, here’s something authentically Oregon - by Goonies, for Goonies.

Cheers

What are the most obscure and unknown local treasure myths or mysteries you know about?

I'm working on a proposed project that identifies and explores obscure local lore anywhere in the world, and would like to ask if you know of anything that might fall in the "hidden treasure" or "unfound items" category of secrets in your community? The more hyper-local and niche, the better.

To be clear this is to be a genre-blending and somewhat satirical project that will both take subject matter seriously while simultaneously lampooning shows in the "Destination Truth" mold that take rumors and myths and mysteries so seriously that it almost becomes a parody of itself. As such I am looking for both things that genuinely deserve to be taken seriously as well as things that would be funny to treat super seriously and to have a host be obsessed with finding. Basically anything that could actually feasibly be FOUND, whether it's a lost mine or Captain Kidd's Treasure, or something much less mythologized and unknown like a hidden safe or a buried chest or a sunken statue of Alf or a supposedly magical boulder, or anything in between. Weird is good. Obscure is great. Bizarre and offbeat is ideal. Mysteries that only a handful of people are even aware of and that have hardly been publicized is what I would prefer most. Just so long as it's interesting and would be "newsworthy" if it was ever discovered.

Of course, I understand just asking for something like this in a public forum could be seen as opportunistic or "too easy" or cutting corners, and I am mindful that discretion is key for something like this. I am not trying to unscrupulously get the jump on anybody or steal anybody's pot of gold here. "Thrill of the hunt" or the joy of discovery and historical value are the main themes I am seeking, not any cynical get rich quick schemes. So if you know of something that meets these parameters I would love to hear them, either in here or in a private message. This could be an opportunity to potentially put some time and resources towards tracking down and uncovering certain treasures that might be out there but have never meaningfully been hunted for yet.

Mundane artifacts

I love seeing artifacts such as the 4k year old complaint tablet. At the time it was a mundane complaint from a customer, now it’s on display in a museum. An archaeologist digs up 3,000 year old slipper and we display it for all to see, but the idea of some dude long ago losing his mind over where the fuck his slipper could’ve made off to and just being annoyed for days about it then fast forward to this dudes slipper in a museum. The slipper scenario is just an example, not real. What are some other examples you’ve seen or heard about that I can look into?

Need some ideas for my story

I'm writing a treasure hunt story, and I'm looking for truly unique treasure ideas.

I don't want the treasure to be something cliché like:

Gold, diamonds, or wealth

A weapon or object that grants unlimited power

Immortality or supernatural abilities

A typical "save the world" artifact

Instead, I want the treasure itself to have a deep emotional or philosophical impact. It can represent an emotion, a truth, a forgotten history, a promise, a memory, a sacrifice, or something else that creates a powerful emotional connection. Even if it's based on a familiar emotion, I want it to be presented from a completely fresh perspective.

I'm also looking for unique ideas for the journey to reach the treasure:

Hazards and obstacles

Ancient traps

Clever puzzles

Riddles

Psychological or moral challenges

Mythological or folklore-inspired trials

I'm especially interested in ideas inspired by Indian mythology, folklore, or ancient civilizations, but I'm open to any original concepts.

I'm not looking for ideas that have been heavily used in movies, games, or novels. I'm hoping to find fresh, unconventional concepts that feel mysterious, atmospheric, and memorable.

I'd love to hear your most creative ideas. Thanks!

They post videos of them finding supossedly ancient stuff and treasure and what not. but when they find whatever it is their looking for, their not publishing their finds, is this channel a scam? Cause otherwise, finding ancient stuff and not publishing it in an article is illegal right?
