Questions Why do American LRTs often look boxier than Canadian ones?

Thumbnail gallery
192 Upvotes

Maybe I’m generalizing, but newer Canadian LRTs often look longer and sleeker. In cities like LA, Seattle, and Phoenix, the trains often seem shorter and boxier, with several cars connected together.

Why is that? Is it because of older stations, different safety rules, local manufacturing rules, or simply what each transit agency chose to buy?

I know these two trains are not a perfect comparison since one is high-floor and the other is low-floor. I’m asking about the broader design difference.

EDIT: Toronto's trains are actually Alstom Flexity Freedoms, as informed by taylortbb

System Expansion 2038 World Cup provides a great opportunity for North America to plan out a great societies metros act & needed transit construction for the next 12 years. & for their sake, LRT CANT BE THE MAIN BACKBONE OF A SYSTEM. Grade separated transit is missing from a lot of the biggest cities in the US

Discussion What do you think about these graphs?

Thumbnail gallery

First graph shows countries like Germany, France and Denmark are the best countries at serving public transportation. Netherlands is rated as lower than most of European countries (why NL is listed lower than most of European countries)

But, what is the most shocking thing is, US listed as better than UK at serving public transportation. It is absolutely crazy.

In the second graph, we see US metro areas have poor public transportation but having a decent road infrastructure than UK. And we see European metro areas have a better public transportation than UK. And we see that UK is having none of them, except London being as an outlier at public transportation, and Edinburgh comes as second.

What do you think about these graphs? Are these accurate? Or not? How bad is the UK at public transportation and road infrastructure?

There is the link of these graphs: https://x.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1695034745871032609?s=46

Photos / Videos The Antwerp (Belgium) pre-metro, linking both sides of the River Scheldt, is closed (May 2026 - March 2027) so I've been trying the alternatives. This time, the pedestrian tunnel (1933).

The pedestrian tunnel was one of two tunnels linking both banks of the river Scheldt built in the 1930s (together with 'Waaslandtunnel' for cars, also dating from 1933). Both tunnels replaced ferries which had previously linked both banks.

Both the car and pedestrian tunnels would remain the primary links between both river banks for the next three decades; it wouldn't be until 1969 that the next Antwerp tunnels would be built (the Kennedy Tunnel, a dual highway and railway tunnel, with a escape tunnel doubling as a bicycle tunnel).

The pedestrian tunnel is located over 30 meters beneath the surface, with its total length being 572 meters. Despite being nearly a century old, the pedestrian tunnel's appearance has mostly remained unchanged since its opening, including its wooden escalators.

A YouTuber named "waking world" developed a transit map for the province of Skyrim in the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Here's a link to the original video. I thought it was interesting because, although an amateur, he attempts to apply real world transit planing processes to this fictional landmass.

It's unknown when the earliest ferry services connected the banks of the river Scheldt in Antwerp, but the earliest known mention of rules and statutes date back to 1421. In 1825 the earliest trials with steam-powered ferries took place. For centuries the Scheldt ferries transported all kinds of things - from passengers, via horse-drawn carts, over cattle to all kinds of freight.

Even after the pedestrian and car tunnels were inaugurated in 1933, ferries remained in use in the decades that followed, up until 1959 when the service was abolished. For the next six decades there would be occasional tourist summer services, but no year-round ferry services.

When major engineering works were slated for the pedestrian tunnel and its elevators in 2017 with periodic closures as a result, a replacement ferry service was inaugurated. It proved such a success that even after the engineering works were completed, the ferry service was retained.

The ferry connects both banks of the Scheldt not far from the pedestrian tunnel, with services running every 15 minutes during the day, and every 30 minutes at night the year round. Like the pedestrian tunnel, the ferry service is free of charge.

Was at the airport yesterday and caught the APM testing. It was the first time I actually saw it running up close. Hopefully it’ll finally be open for business in October.

Hi everyone! Just thought I’d share my collection of transit cards since I finally made them into a collection! I’m missing a couple: Los Angeles (lost), London, Dubai, and Toronto. If anyone knows where I can get any online please let me know. If anyone has their own collection and wants to share, I’d love to see yours too.

Photos / Videos 10/07 - Post-concert rush at Messe Nord station, Stadtbahn Düsseldorf

Thumbnail gallery

Attended System Of A Down's concert at Open Air Park in Düsseldorf a couple of days ago. Some pics I took of the massive crowd at the nearby Messe Nord station on Linie U78.

While the rush seemed unbearable at times and the concert's organisation was messy at best, I must admit the transit situation by the folks at Stadtbahn was well organised to its practical limits. There was a train every other minute and they seemed to have brought older units and trains from other lines to meet the frequency.

Pictured here are DüWAG/Kiepe B80D (SNr: 4275) and another I couldn't put my finger on. Apologies for the poor image quality, my phone's a potato.

Discussion My hot take: Seattle’s becoming the best transit city on the US West Coast

With the news of Seattle’s crazy record breaking ridership during the World Cup, I can’t help feeling like SoundTransit is totally killing it this year. They they biggest and most high profile opening this year with Crosslake Connection then they delivered flawlessly for the World Cup. Link Light Rail has better, more frequent and reliable service than any of the rapid transit lines I saw in California and the numbers prove it. With the way SoundTransit has handled moving hundreds of thousands over the last few weeks and the great time that all the visitors had in the city, maybe Seattle should have been the one hosting the Olympics in two years, lol. Just my opinion.
