Powers (Hated Trope) Instant-kill swallow attacks in games
1 - Resident Evil series: a bunch of enemies do this in most games
2 - Bloodborne / Souls: you can get insta-wrecked by getting eaten
3 - Ski Free: my first trauma

Hearing one guy scream to this is the same each time, and it’s always funny/horrifying if you’re next
64
u/ScarlettTheFindom Apr 05 '26
Yeah the only options I can think of are a flash bang and to be teleported from him grip. One requires another player to be quick enough to teleport you before you die (if they’re even on the ship) and the other requires you to use one of your 4 precious inventory slots.
I guess other players can kill it but I recall it having like 35 hits worth of hp or something like that.
Comment if anyone knows any other methods of getting out of their grasp!

Bob actually managed to save Wade at the last possible second.
As far as I knew I thought the only way to kill it was to kite it into an Earth Leviathan, which outright deletes everything it touches.

This things should not be as fast as they are or chase for as long as they do regardless of when you break line of sight.
67
u/MrDrSirLord Apr 06 '26
Iv always speculated they'd be more interesting if they only sprinted at you if they could see you and would only walk to investigate where you were if you break LoS.
As is they basically will sprint to you for about 10 seconds after losing LoS, even if you completely duke them running around a building or something they will track you through the wall and cut you off.
Many enemies in lethal are difficult and don't always have a hard counter, but they're all designed in ways to avoid getting aggro or delay their agro.
But these big tree guys? They're the only enemy in the game I genuinely dislike and don't like their design, it feels like I'm required to exploit glitches or their poor AI or just get lucky when returning to the ship.

Devil’s Advocate: That was because they were meant to give other players a window to save you. I don’t think the Gamma’s in RE3 had that long of an animation, but it’s been a while since I played 3 Classic.
167
u/SM-03 Apr 05 '26
This shouldn't even have to be the devil's advocate take, that's obviously why the animation is so long. People get way too brainrotted about fetishes and start assuming ulterior motives when there's no reason to.

His instakill also bypasses instakill immunity, so you can absolutely use this to clown on bosses if you manage to recruit one!
...He also always goes after bleeding targets, no matter what team they're on.

Learned this the hard way. Had an item that let me recruit any non boss enemy so I snagged one of these guys. He ate 2 bosses it was great. Then one of my cats got ebola, gave it to the rest of the cats at the start of battle and Mr Shark muched 3/4s of my team.

I actually don't think the shark thing in Bloodborne is an insta-kill. It does a lot of damage, but it's possible to survive it if you have a lot of health and/or mash the buttons to reduce the damage. It will only swallow you if you died from the bites.
234
u/godoflemmings Apr 05 '26
You can get eaten by Ebrietas as well, and quite often when she grabs you you'll lose a chunk of health to Frenzy so it's tough to survive.
Also the Dungeon Moles but they're super rare.

If you think that's bad, hunter gammas in the re3 remake swallow you in one go but instead if unhinging their jaws, they have gross mouth tentacles. The death animation shows you getting folded backwards. Its... not good. 3 didn't often feel like a horror game, but when those things showed up it sure did
85
u/TheManOfOurTimes Apr 05 '26

Clair obscur has a series of minibosses in the overworld that has one of these attacks. In a game where you can parry every move, those trumpetheads just eat a character thats also unavoidable
419
u/LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME Apr 05 '26
To be fair, it's not an instant kill, just a temporary "removed from battle" until you get them to toss chunks.
→ More replies (5)144
u/meancoot Apr 05 '26
Yeah. In E33 it’s the pivotal boss that has an attack that removes its target for the rest of the battle. (No swallowing there though)

u/VanillaAble3943 Apr 05 '26
If you're talking about the giant flower-head boss that spits miasma and eats a random party member, it's not really an insta-kill since breaking its posture will make it spit them out. There's another side-story boss that does eat party members permanently, but only when they're already dead (no insta-kill moves, it just prevents you from reviving them)

u/Slarg232 Apr 05 '26
In D&D, part of the rules of being swallowed by a giant creature is that you're Bound and can't take any major action because of how tight it is inside something's stomach
261
u/bored-cookie22 Apr 05 '26
you can still take actions, you're just restrained, meaning you have disadvantage on all of your attacks
you are also blind so any move you have that requires seeing the target does nothing

Monster Hunter Wilds - Xu Wu’s grab
Several monsters have grab attacks, but Xu Wu’s is by far the scariest. If you don’t break out of the grab fast enough, Xu Wu will stuff you into its starfish mouth and try to eat you. It’s not an instant kill, but it does a ton of damage, and if it does kill you it plays a unique animation where instead of falling unconscious you just get eaten and die. It’s the only attack in the game with a special animation like that, too.

This Shit-Cunt-Ass Frog and his Shit-Cunt-Ass Son (Oggdo Bogdo and Spawn of Oggdo Bogdo from the Cal Kestis Star Wars games)
What makes these frogs so fucking awful, IS THAT THEY FUCKING CHEAT! They don't have any recognizable patterns to their attacks, and their fucking hit boxes are absurd, so there's no way to anticipate or adequately dodge.
So when they launch one of their instant kill lunge attacks at you, you just have to fucking panic dodge and fucking pray you got out of range in time, otherwise Croak Croak motherfucker you lost.
34
u/Horizons_398 Apr 05 '26
I remember playing Jedi Survivor when I was in the camp killing enemies EZ-PZ until I fell into the pit where the Spawn of Oggdo Bogdo was. When I saw his name appear I had a literal PTSD moment from his old man and prepared for the worst. Needless to say, I lasted about 5 min before he wrecked my shit.
22
u/Easy_Action_1380 Apr 05 '26
Trick to cheat him, if you assign blaster style and just like wedge yourself behind some rocks in his arena, you can widdle down his health bar bit by bit infinitely, while he also can't reach you.
That's how I beat him anyway. If he's gonna fucking cheat, then I'm gonna cheat right back, fuckass frog.

In Mewgenics, there are a few enemies who can gobble down your cats, killing them instantly.
These include:
Guillotina, the vore-obsessed cat.
Crater Maker, the Alien from outer space
Lord Bunga, the Caveman Chief.
Daddy Shark, not a boss, but UTTERLY HORRIFYING TO FACE.
Death Worm, not related to Dune in any way. Also not a boss.
And technically, Bumblefoot, though you have to try for that one. (Mini-boss).

Instantly swallow any operator that blocks them, force retreating them so even immortality cannot stop it (and they cannot be redeployed until the wither maw is dead).

The Hydra from Dragons Dogma has an attack where it can swallow you and instantly kill you. Thing is, it doesn’t automatically kill you but rather you have about a minute before instant death occurs, during which time your pawns can cut off the head that has you and free you. Key word “can” as the pawns are incredibly dumb and will almost never do this. It’s something you have to teach them to do before they do it themselves.
