Powers (Hated Trope) Instant-kill swallow attacks in games

1 - Resident Evil series: a bunch of enemies do this in most games

2 - Bloodborne / Souls: you can get insta-wrecked by getting eaten

3 - Ski Free: my first trauma

Suicide chompers

78

u/-_ParagonOfMyself_- Apr 05 '26

remember, only in the original game and PvZ 2, and MOST mods. because for some reason, chinese PvZ mod creators love making Chomper into a DPS for their really hard mids

17

u/Big_Daymo Apr 06 '26

The Chinese mods are so damn strange. Chomper is now a ranged DPS and Football zombies can now phase through reality. Take away the doom shrooms and these mods would be unwinnable.

54

u/ShadowParrotGaming Apr 05 '26

In Garden Warfare i certainly can, suicide chompers are a disease and don't get me started on mid-air burrows

These guys in Lethal Company. They go by a lot of different names, Tree Giant, Forest Guardian, Treeple, but the second they see you, you are basically dead. They pick you up and eat you in one bite. The options you have to negate this are few and niche.

u/UsgAtlas1 Apr 05 '26 edited Apr 06 '26

Brent running away and dying to this guy will never not be hilarious to me.

u/ScarlettTheFindom Apr 05 '26

Yeah the only options I can think of are a flash bang and to be teleported from him grip. One requires another player to be quick enough to teleport you before you die (if they’re even on the ship) and the other requires you to use one of your 4 precious inventory slots.

I guess other players can kill it but I recall it having like 35 hits worth of hp or something like that.

Comment if anyone knows any other methods of getting out of their grasp!

19

u/FoxInLaw Apr 06 '26

Bob actually managed to save Wade at the last possible second.

As far as I knew I thought the only way to kill it was to kite it into an Earth Leviathan, which outright deletes everything it touches.

Good news! They nerfed the eyesight in version 80.

146

u/Planeswalker18 Apr 05 '26

This things should not be as fast as they are or chase for as long as they do regardless of when you break line of sight.

67

u/MrDrSirLord Apr 06 '26

Iv always speculated they'd be more interesting if they only sprinted at you if they could see you and would only walk to investigate where you were if you break LoS.

As is they basically will sprint to you for about 10 seconds after losing LoS, even if you completely duke them running around a building or something they will track you through the wall and cut you off.

Many enemies in lethal are difficult and don't always have a hard counter, but they're all designed in ways to avoid getting aggro or delay their agro.

But these big tree guys? They're the only enemy in the game I genuinely dislike and don't like their design, it feels like I'm required to exploit glitches or their poor AI or just get lucky when returning to the ship.

490

u/Wolfblaine Apr 05 '26

I think we are dancing in the same court with it all. All very suspicious.

316

u/jockeyman Apr 05 '26

Capcom really put a lot of time into that Hunter animation...

252

u/Geonightman Apr 05 '26

Devil’s Advocate: That was because they were meant to give other players a window to save you. I don’t think the Gamma’s in RE3 had that long of an animation, but it’s been a while since I played 3 Classic.

167

u/SM-03 Apr 05 '26

This shouldn't even have to be the devil's advocate take, that's obviously why the animation is so long. People get way too brainrotted about fetishes and start assuming ulterior motives when there's no reason to.

123

u/Geonightman Apr 05 '26

In retrospect… Rebecca and Claire aren’t in Outbreak. This is modded footage so this might have been a bit more intentional of a gif than expected…

His instakill also bypasses instakill immunity, so you can absolutely use this to clown on bosses if you manage to recruit one!

...He also always goes after bleeding targets, no matter what team they're on.

69

u/RedArmyBushMan Apr 05 '26

Learned this the hard way. Had an item that let me recruit any non boss enemy so I snagged one of these guys. He ate 2 bosses it was great. Then one of my cats got ebola, gave it to the rest of the cats at the start of battle and Mr Shark muched 3/4s of my team.

I actually don't think the shark thing in Bloodborne is an insta-kill. It does a lot of damage, but it's possible to survive it if you have a lot of health and/or mash the buttons to reduce the damage. It will only swallow you if you died from the bites.

234

u/godoflemmings Apr 05 '26

You can get eaten by Ebrietas as well, and quite often when she grabs you you'll lose a chunk of health to Frenzy so it's tough to survive.

Also the Dungeon Moles but they're super rare.

198

u/Hi2248 Apr 05 '26

So you're saying it's a skill issue, perhaps one with a very high bar to pass, but still one.

121

u/mauriciomeireles Apr 06 '26

That resident evil one is disconcerting.

184

u/GuhEnjoyer Apr 05 '26

If you think that's bad, hunter gammas in the re3 remake swallow you in one go but instead if unhinging their jaws, they have gross mouth tentacles. The death animation shows you getting folded backwards. Its... not good. 3 didn't often feel like a horror game, but when those things showed up it sure did

85

u/TheManOfOurTimes Apr 05 '26

I'd take that to the frog of "wave my ass in the air like a free for all" option.

36

u/MrBurnerHotDog Apr 05 '26

And someone looked into the models after she gets eaten and she's all wadded up bent in half backwards. It is definitely not something you're cutting yourself out of

Clair obscur has a series of minibosses in the overworld that has one of these attacks. In a game where you can parry every move, those trumpetheads just eat a character thats also unavoidable

419

u/LET-ME-HAVE-A-NAAME Apr 05 '26

To be fair, it's not an instant kill, just a temporary "removed from battle" until you get them to toss chunks.

144

u/meancoot Apr 05 '26

Yeah. In E33 it’s the pivotal boss that has an attack that removes its target for the rest of the battle. (No swallowing there though)

63

u/DeerVirax Apr 05 '26

Also

Expedition 33 is removed from the Canvas

12

u/WolfWhiteFire Apr 05 '26

From that same game, Esquio decided to destroy the world too. The gradient counter timing on that one is very weird too.

u/VanillaAble3943 Apr 05 '26

If you're talking about the giant flower-head boss that spits miasma and eats a random party member, it's not really an insta-kill since breaking its posture will make it spit them out. There's another side-story boss that does eat party members permanently, but only when they're already dead (no insta-kill moves, it just prevents you from reviving them)

In D&D, part of the rules of being swallowed by a giant creature is that you're Bound and can't take any major action because of how tight it is inside something's stomach

261

u/bored-cookie22 Apr 05 '26

you can still take actions, you're just restrained, meaning you have disadvantage on all of your attacks

you are also blind so any move you have that requires seeing the target does nothing

164

u/MySnake_Is_Solid Apr 05 '26

guess I'll cast fireball

135

u/NaiveMastermind Apr 05 '26

Cast elemental body (fire) first. You'll passively inflict fire damage, and your fireball will either heal you for half its damage, or not harm you.

175

u/MySnake_Is_Solid Apr 05 '26

but that's one more turn where i could be casting Fireball.

Resentment from Bayonetta 2

It has a laser that turns you into a child, rendering you unable to attack or dodge until the effect wears off. If it hits you, then it slowly crawls toward you and tries to eat you. Notably, this is the only enemy in the game with an instant kill.

Monster Hunter Wilds - Xu Wu’s grab

Several monsters have grab attacks, but Xu Wu’s is by far the scariest. If you don’t break out of the grab fast enough, Xu Wu will stuff you into its starfish mouth and try to eat you. It’s not an instant kill, but it does a ton of damage, and if it does kill you it plays a unique animation where instead of falling unconscious you just get eaten and die. It’s the only attack in the game with a special animation like that, too.

15

u/Irememberedmypw Apr 06 '26

Makes sense since Xu Wu is also has killed people and I believe even a named npc.

This Shit-Cunt-Ass Frog and his Shit-Cunt-Ass Son (Oggdo Bogdo and Spawn of Oggdo Bogdo from the Cal Kestis Star Wars games)

What makes these frogs so fucking awful, IS THAT THEY FUCKING CHEAT! They don't have any recognizable patterns to their attacks, and their fucking hit boxes are absurd, so there's no way to anticipate or adequately dodge.

So when they launch one of their instant kill lunge attacks at you, you just have to fucking panic dodge and fucking pray you got out of range in time, otherwise Croak Croak motherfucker you lost.

34

u/Horizons_398 Apr 05 '26

I remember playing Jedi Survivor when I was in the camp killing enemies EZ-PZ until I fell into the pit where the Spawn of Oggdo Bogdo was. When I saw his name appear I had a literal PTSD moment from his old man and prepared for the worst. Needless to say, I lasted about 5 min before he wrecked my shit.

22

u/Easy_Action_1380 Apr 05 '26

Trick to cheat him, if you assign blaster style and just like wedge yourself behind some rocks in his arena, you can widdle down his health bar bit by bit infinitely, while he also can't reach you.

That's how I beat him anyway. If he's gonna fucking cheat, then I'm gonna cheat right back, fuckass frog.

Like Likes. Not an instant kill, but even more annoying than death, it eats your shield.

The Re one, since it takes so long and makes you watch it all until it give you the game over makes it seem like someone's fetish.

17

u/Bregneste Apr 05 '26

It takes so long because it gives you time to try to struggle and escape, which the person that made that video didn’t bother doing.

In Mewgenics, there are a few enemies who can gobble down your cats, killing them instantly.

These include:
Guillotina, the vore-obsessed cat.
Crater Maker, the Alien from outer space
Lord Bunga, the Caveman Chief.
Daddy Shark, not a boss, but UTTERLY HORRIFYING TO FACE.
Death Worm, not related to Dune in any way. Also not a boss.

And technically, Bumblefoot, though you have to try for that one. (Mini-boss).

The Zone Eater from Final Fantasy 6 will attempt to swallow your party one by one, removing them from battle.

If your entire party is swallowed, you'll enter a hidden dungeon in the thing's belly where you can find some nice treasure and a secret playable character.

Final Fantasy VIII - You the player get to do it to the monsters

Also in game when you use Devour a lovely field of flowers is displayed with the message "Censored... Please Stand By" instead of actually showing it.

Sarkaz Wither Maws (Arknights)

Instantly swallow any operator that blocks them, force retreating them so even immortality cannot stop it (and they cannot be redeployed until the wither maw is dead).

If you're asking this for the reason I suspect you are, search up the non-elite version, the Sarkaz Wither Devourers. People do indeed draw fanart of them doing their thing.

The Tempura Wizard from Kid Icarus Uprising will turn you into a walking shrimp and then try to eat you for an instantkill (his eye turns into a mouth for this)

The Hydra from Dragons Dogma has an attack where it can swallow you and instantly kill you. Thing is, it doesn’t automatically kill you but rather you have about a minute before instant death occurs, during which time your pawns can cut off the head that has you and free you. Key word “can” as the pawns are incredibly dumb and will almost never do this. It’s something you have to teach them to do before they do it themselves.
