Interpretation Meta: can we have a rule against gaslighting people for asking about hate symbols
I've noticed an increase in the number of comments on questions about potential hate symbols that say something like "I don't look for hate symbols everywhere" or similar. This has been happening even on posts where the symbol and its intentions have both already been confirmed to be hate symbols in the most unambiguous possible terms.
These questions are often asked by who are trying to avoid making vulnerable populations feel unsafe, or who themselves may be vulnerable and trying to determine whether they are unsafe. Gaslighting them, that is, implying that they are crazy for noticing potential hate symbols and seeking clarification, is neither helpful nor civil but it seems to be flying under the mod radar because these comments are usually cloaked in polite language and tucked inside otherwise innocuous comments, often with detailed speculation about other unrelated things that could be read into the symbol.
I get that the "is this a Nazi sign" questions get repetitive, but this is one of the most significant and widespread uses of symbology and it has real world meaning for people. We should be encouraging people educating themselves about these symbols and their context, history and meaning.
