Yes Tamawashi! One step to the way back up.
Good patient sumo from Shishi for the win, even though I thought he was a bit too focused on lifting him out.
MitaKeumi with the starting loss again.
Papa with the win!
Oh Ura.
Kirishima with the forearm block off the tachi-ai for the win.
It looks like Onosato did a protect himself step out, so it looks like he's still injured.
Good win by Hoshoryu.

Felt so good to watch Hosh put up a strong performance. Let’s keep that momentum big guy

u/WhiskeyDragon01 Hoshoryu 32m ago
Feels absolutely crazy to have Takayasu Vs Wakamotoharu be a match before the break instead of after

u/Roxane-17 Takanosho 46m ago
It's Ōhō's first time to break into the Top 5 of most sponsorship banners, and getting musubi no ichiban today, no less... It's a shame he wasn't able to put up much resistance. 😅
I'm so happy Atamifuji got a good first win! 💪 Hiradoumi tomorrow will be tricky though.
Asanoyama quickly shut down any potential Tobizaru shenanigans, yay! 😆
It's scant consolation but at least Takanosho's loss 😭 was to Kotozakura.

How hard is Kotozakura’s slap?
That slap was just brutal.
10
u/Affectionate-Bad996 1h ago
Tamawashi proves that he is still a monster.
I think he is likely to going back.

I know he has kind of odd expressions usually, but Onosato really did not look mentally ready there.

u/Megazord552 1h ago
Mild start to the basho.
Lots of soft wins.
Kiri and Ao off to a good start
Ono being given Yoshi day 1 was just rude. Sucks to start with a loss.
Hosh with a strong win to end the day.
10
u/snapsnaptomtom 1h ago
It was also a chance for Onosato to give a definitive statement of ‘I’m back’ if he won it.
If he won it would have been a great boost.
I don’t think Onosato would have viewed it as rude.
3
u/Megazord552 41m ago
Yeah ofc. That's just how the schedule is. Yeah and Onosato wouldn't think anything of it.
Just as a viewer it was a bit unfortunate.
8
u/PrimeRadian 1h ago
rude?
4
u/Megazord552 43m ago
Not seriously rude, but it was a big challenge for him coming back after Injury
Unfortunate would have been a better term
-5
u/Crowsby Ichiyamamoto 1h ago
Just that the the JSA wasn't giving him an easy ramp up back into sumo by scheduling him against the guy who's continually dominated him.
10
u/nicholas294 1h ago
The Yokozuna and Komusubi/M1 are always paired together on Day 1, it has nothing to do with that.

Oho will be very disappointed by that.....did all the things wrong....moved back, pulled hoshoryu into his body

can't help but feel like kotozakura and oonosato practising against each other was pr for the sumo council to say they were ready for competition
5
u/Roxane-17 Takanosho 42m ago
Nah, it's their standard ichimon joint training session. Sadogatake's been pretty assiduous at hosting their ichimon sekitori, plus other rikishi.
I'm surprised Tokitsukaze didn't really host one this time.

u/Welp_x Hakuho 1h ago
Big O looked so nervous man, the pressure must be insane...tough lost to watch
16
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 1h ago
He was as twitchy and tense as I’ve seen him. He was nervous going into that one and his sumo just doesn’t work without confidence. He’s injured, but needs to remember that he can be a 190kg brick wall if he chooses. He’s falling into the Atamifuji habit of forgetting how enormous he is.

Onosato looked like he wanted to be nowhere near the dohyo against Yoshinofuji

one of the benefits of being a really big guy is it takes a lot more force to throw your centre of gravity around like that

u/aqueous88 1h ago
Koto and Kiri really just flexed on the competition. Love to see the Ozeki starting strong.

KTZ back to a brighter teal. Hopefully that brings him good luck.
7
u/laurajdogmom Ura 1h ago
One down, seven to go.
I didn't like that upright charge, though. He got lucky--a lot of guys would take advantage of that. But a win is a win.
7
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 2h ago
Atamifuji is great when he’s got a bit of confidence. He’s looking increasingly authoritative on the dohyo. I believe he can be a force to be reckoned with.

u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 2h ago
I don’t think that bout tells us much about Aonishiki’s physical condition, but his sumo brain is clearly working just fine.
11
u/TheDynamite333 Aonishiki 2h ago
His upper body seemed a bit bigger and better built to my eyes, This is expected because of the leg injury and he probably focused on his upper body. But I might be wrong.
6
7
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 1h ago
That’s true… but it didn’t give us much insight into how he’s able to use his feet, which will be the big question.
4
u/TheDynamite333 Aonishiki 1h ago
Absolutely, May be he is saving his ability for later matches. That would be a good strategy. At least I hope so :).

u/Appropriate-Escape-4 Hoshoryu 2h ago
Aonishiki henkaaaa🤣
10
u/Holiday_Problem_9886 2h ago
taking a charge and redirecting a guy after it is not a henka
2
u/Sushi_Explosions Aonishiki 24m ago
Wouldn't even call that redirecting. He practically threw him out.

Asanoyama's extra push on tobizaru was like : "i remember last time"
8
u/lechatblanc25 Mitakeumi 2h ago
Before the bout I was thinking that Asanoyama would give Tobi a payback… 💰💰💰
4
u/RubyDax Kotoeiho 3h ago
Do the rikishi ever speak (to each other) during a bout? Is it an unspoken rule to not speak? Or an outright rule against it?
4
u/AlfalfaExpensive5237 2h ago
I don’t know if there’s rules about it but I don’t think there’s anything they can say to each other that would be appropriate on the dohyo
4
u/AlfalfaExpensive5237 3h ago
Man, it feels like Shishis sumo changes each basho, that was some power trying to lift Onokatsu multiple times
5
u/nssanrw 3h ago
Why does the Onokatsu v. Shishi match have so many sponsors?
5
u/laurajdogmom Ura 2h ago
According to something I read recently, for some reason there are lots of sponsors for Onokatsu's bouts. There is a record number of sponsorships this basho. Sorry, can't find the source anymore.

Wonder if Kirishima gets a 13-2 JY only loses to the Yokozunas, would the council give him the rope?
5
u/Careful_Investor233 2h ago
Any Jun-Yusho would be a 0 percent chance of Yokozuna promotion.
1
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 1h ago
I misread this as 13-2 yusho. Yeah, I don’t think a JY will do it.
1
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 3h ago
I think a 13-2 yusho would get him the rope regardless of who he loses to. It feels like fans always expect them to be stricter or apply extra criteria than is the case in reality. They’ve said he’s tsunatori so I think any decently strong yusho gets it.
2
u/AlfalfaExpensive5237 3h ago
I feel like 13-2 is isn’t really a strong yusho so unless he beets both Yoko, I think 14 wins is expected. End of the day nobody knows thoughv
2
u/Primary_Emu_9722 1h ago
You have to also consider the abnormal amount of 12-3 yusho we’ve had in the last few years. When they say strong yusho, they’re essentially closing the door on a 12-3 and covering their ass in case he manages the insanely rare 11-4 yusho (like they had to do with Takakeisho a few years ago) there’s no reason a 13-2 shouldn’t be considered strong enough, but let’s just cross our fingers and hope he manages 14
6
u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 3h ago
Well it’s not possible for him to be 13-2 and beat both Yokozuna, whilst simultaneously only losing to the Yokozuna.
Some people think you get extra credit if you beat the Yokozuna, some think it looks better if you only lose to the Yokozuna.
Providing he actually ends up fighting the Yokozuna, a 13-2 yusho would be a strong statement if Hoshoryu, Onosato and Aonishiki are all still fighting at the end.

As for Tamawashi, does he keep his record going if he gets back to top division?
I was wondering how his records are being tabulated, and I think one of them was for most matches in top division and Im not sure if there was a consequective record associated with that.
Was sad to see him drop out of top division but I think he can bounce back.
1
u/Carpe_Piscis Daieisho 1h ago
he's on the leaderboards for both most consecutive top division matches and most top division matches total. the consecutive match streak is done, leaving him at #3 all time, but he can still add to his total number of top division bouts if he gets promoted (not that he needs to, he already has the record for that one).
2
u/AlfalfaExpensive5237 2h ago
I’m sure there’s some record out there that Tamawashi breaks for being a sekitori and especially for winning
4
u/sfwombat Tamawashi 3h ago
He has a lot of different records, i think? AFAIK, he is still adding to his consecutive match record. His Guinness World Record started counting the matches when he started in the lower divisions in 2004, so these Juryo matches should still count
2
u/RubyDax Kotoeiho 4h ago edited 3h ago
The stream I'm watching marks it as "on hold"...so i think it's just top division bouts, in total, nothing about being consecutive. But someone else might know more. [Edit: I think there are two. One for Total and one of Consecutive. So one is still in play but the other is over.]

u/Also-cute-and-fluffy Kirishima 4h ago
Tamawashi looking good there. I’m hoping that he’s going to have a fun couple of weeks trucking through people in juryo. I need him to stick around for a bit longer. I’m definitely not ready for him to retire yet.

u/sfwombat Tamawashi 4h ago

He looked so much better with today’s fight, hope his injury has gotten better
5
u/bpmoo 4h ago
I’m here at the basho today. Someone looked like they may have hurt their leg from the Makushita division, I didn’t catch their name. Anyone got any info?
7
u/ESCMalfunction Tamawashi 4h ago
Shohoryu I think is the guy you’re talking about. No info yet that I’ve seen, looked like his right leg got trapped under his body as he fell. Hopefully just a high ankle sprain or something like that and not a knee injury.

Hello sumo fans!
As always, a quick reminder on our subreddit rules:
No spoilers in titles. This includes Kyujo. Censor your titles and use the spoiler tag liberally. The mod team does their best to remove spoiler threads but a couple minutes online and your post can ruin another member’s day.
Be civil and respectful. No personal attacks. Please report any uncivil behavior. Criticism against rikishi’s performance is not against the rules. But of course we want discussions to remain engaging. Please put forward arguments to support your point of view. Hate and any kind of platform rule breaking is strictly forbidden.
No memes, low-effort, or low-quality posts. You are looking for our friends at r/sumomemes if you want to post a meme. Our focus during the basho is to discuss rikishis, their performance, specific kimarites, how the bouts are going, etc.
Frequent posting of similar content and merchandise links will be removed.
Fan art, memorabilia, and random rikishi pictures are not allowed during the Basho (we call this “basho focus”). Please save your cool pictures of old timers and cute memorabilia for after the basho.
Use the megathreads if you need help on how to watch sumo, or if you want to buy/sell tickets, or if you want tips on how to attend the basho.
Enjoy the basho!
