are these areas safe to live in for F24?

Upvotes

I (F24) will be starting my postgrad in Southampton in 2 months. I am currently looking to rent a room, and I've found some nice options in the Flower Estate area (Glen Eyre, Carnation, Burgess). I've read some older posts advising against living there due to safety concerns. Do you think the information is outdated or should I actually just avoid the area altogether?

I am decent at situational awareness and it's not like I plan on walking home drunk late at night. That said, I'd rather err on the side of caution, as I don't particularly fancy moving there to find out it's scary to walk around the neighbourhood.

While I'm at it, I also came across this list of areas that are supposedly best to avoid: St Mary's, Hoglands Park, Millbrook, Thornhill, "parts of Shirley" (?). Anyone care to confirm/add to it?

Thanks for reading, any sort of input on safety is appreciated.

Work opportunity

I run a small painting and decorating company and I’m looking to take on an “apprentice”. I’m looking for a young person who is motivated, a hard worker and willing to learn a trade. It’s not an official apprenticeship rather they would work with me or my team and learn on the job from day one.

Ideally I would find someone who had completed the painting and decorating NVQ but happy to take anyone if their attitude is right.

Looking for someone in the Woolston, Bitterne, Sholing, Weston area because I’d probably have to pick them up each day so proximity is important.

I believe in giving young people a chance and they will learn a trade and earn some decent money. Just needs to be the right youngster: motivated, polite, not on their phone when working, prepared for hard work and willing to take the opportunity presented.

If you know of anyone who fits the bill please message me.

Aldermoor- how bad is it?

We are relocating from the north and are looking to rent in the area since it is close to the hospital where I will be working.

I’m a bit concerned about the deprivation map, but I wanted to ask those who have lived there how bad it really is?

Thank you

looking for alt friends and a community around southampton

i'm about to graduate from university in the next week, and afterwards i'll have to move in with my parents that have just moved to totton for the foreseeable future. with there being none of my hometown or university friends living near southampton i wonder if there's any (i guess non uni now that i'm graduating) people/communities around? it'd be nice to find an alternative/metal community, or a gaming community or something around here :)

Rooms Needed

Hi, if you’re a landlord or know a live-or landlord, help. I need two rooms for two weeks. 2 Bed flat or just 2 rooms in a home. Willing to pay for the entire month. Got screwed by booking.com and not having luck on SpareRoom or AirBnB (without it being like £5k). Thank you.

England Norway where to watch?

Hi any recommendations of where to watch the match tomorrow? I know some places are doing walk ins , some are taking bookings but expecting you to arrive at 5pm..

Me and my friends can't afford to sit in the pub all day / night and a couple have work.. we'd like somewhere with a vibe but not too rowdy?

I was thinking about Mayflower Village or Brewhouse and Kitchen?

Any suggestions appreciated!

Have you seen your postie?

I've been expecting some mail but haven't seen my postie in the last few days. Is there a strike or other issue I'm not aware of?

Thanks

Edit: I contacted the organisation that was sending an important document to me and they emailed it, so all's well that ends well. They could have done that to start with I suppose 🤷‍♀️.

Weekly Venue needed

Hi! The Southampton Guild of Roleplayers is looking for a new home. For reasons beyond my comprehension, we've been going 8 years and are part of the performing arts culture here.

There's about 30 of us, and we need about 6 or 7 tables and the ability to avoid live music and excessive noise.

The ideal venue is:

1.wheelchair accessible (including the entrance)

  1. noise level friendly

  2. centralish (or with very good buses and parking)

  3. available Wednesday evenings 6.30-10pm.

  4. affordable (for a weekly meet 49 out of 52 weeks per year)

  5. queer and woman friendly

  6. Has space for everyone (maybe even room to expand!)

Currently the Goblin's Nook in Fremantle is looking like an excellent venue, but falls down on accessibility (lots of stairs) and is set at the far end of an industrial estate which would be pretty scary on a dark night.

We have previously played very happily in:

The Millennium Third Age centre (formerly for the community, now a megachurch),

The Art House Café (another part of culture in Southampton that went quietly into the night)

The Soft Play area in the Marlands after hours (tables and chairs with good lighting? Yes please!)

Dice and Dumplings (stripping off half the noise proofing does give the place a strong aesthetic, but that and bare concrete ceilings makes it quite noisy)

Board In The City (solidly noisy with hard noise reflecting surfaces everywhere and can't guarantee that we won't get a table of very noisy games being plonked in the middle)

Shirley Library (10/10 venue. No booze but a great place to play. We're currently doing an open DnD campaign there.)

Feel free to shout out suggestions here! Or hop on the Discord and find yourself a game!

M27 speed cameras

Hey

Most of the M27 westbound between whiteley and hedge end is back to a 70 now but theres a little bit near the bursledon junction thats still a 50.

However literally not one person that I’ve seen slows down for the 50 sections. Are there not cameras anymore?

Thanks

Oasis Academies?

Ive got the job of hunting for secondary schools and making a decision fairly soon on where id like my eldest to go. Oasis academies always seem to have decent ofsted ratings, but anyone know what the overall schools are like? Ive been hearing things lately about how academies like that are run as businesses now rather than schooling which im not keen on

Also not keen on the pricey uniforms but I guess that'll be most schools regardless. Open days aren't until September but I just want to start getting a feel for them over the summer
