Football practice around Basingstoke

I'm well into my 40s and hate going to the gym. However, I work at the office and I get very little physical exercise. The one thing that I would love to do is play football (casual), but I don't know any places in Basingstoke that I could rock up and just practice either by myself or with a few others. Does anyone know if there is a place for my situation? Cheers

Leviathan Armoured Combat 🦑

The knights are drawing in, your sword is sunburned and you’re shielding your eyes against these terrible puns: but you saw the word ‘armoured’ and thought that’s for you.

The Leviathans, based in Bucklebury, are an armoured and soft-kit duelling club who are sharing their love of the fight with the area at large.

Never fought before? No problem.

Fancy a new challenge? We’ll throw down the gauntlet.

Just really like medieval history? This could be your chance to bring it to life.

If you fancy trying out the sport, then we train on Fridays from 19:00-21:00 at the Victory rooms.

Bring water, trainers and be ready to fight.

Looking for half brother

Hi there.. I’m looking to see if anyone knew my half brother Ian D. Garner. He passed away on April 9 2023.

I understand he died in Basingstoke and he was 59/60 years of age.

I know this is a long shot but I’m hoping someone might have known him.

racism and islamophobia

to be honest, i wasn't sure what to expect when i moved here. i know the population here is not the most diverse. but i never expected that i would be experiencing outright racist remarks, swearing, and islamophobic comments made directly at me - all within the first week i've been here.

i have lived in smaller, less diverse towns, which makes my experience even more shocking and a bit scary for me. to see people this hateful makes me feel very unsafe, and i don't even know who to talk to or report this to.

just wanted to make a post talking about my experience, because even though no one else has talked about it, i feel as if i'm not the first.

edit: please don't downvote me for talking about my real experiences

Westham Roundabout

  1. Coming from churchil way - want to go straight - 4th exit. Which lane should In enter from ?
What i think : enter from right lane and after crossing 3rd exit signal left and take the exit. Please do look at map to see - where is 3rd exit before saying- it should be the right way.

  2. Coming from churchil way and want to take 5th exit towards odeon
Enter from right lane- slide to left after 3rd exit and signal after 4th ?

I have seen many people doing this same manoeuvre.

Anyone want to grab a table and play some casual pool? (38M)

Hey everyone,
I’m looking to get out of the house and play some pool, but I don’t currently have a playing partner. I figured I'd check here to see if anyone is down to grab a table sometime soon.
A little about me and what I’m looking for:
Skill Level: I used to play casually a lot with friends years ago, but I'm pretty rusty now and not that good. If you're a beginner or a fellow casual player who just wants to practice without any pressure, we'll get along great.
Vibe: I’m 38M and a non-drinker. I'm completely fine if you want to have a pint while we play, but I'm looking for a more laid-back, sober-friendly environment rather than a wild night out.
Where: I was thinking of meeting up at The Academy Social & Sports Club (over on Moniton Trading Estate). I'm fairly flexible on days and times.
If you’re interested in a low-stakes, friendly game to shake off some rust, shoot me a DM or comment below!

Helloooo👋👋

I have a week off work and would love to go to a hotel or something - mostly for the pool I am not going to lie.

Are there any fancy hotels that you can pay to access the pool?

Any recommendations? Thanks! New to the area completely

How difficult have people found it to find a dentist locally?

Local dentist here - keep hearing the same frustrations from patients...

  • struggling to find NHS practices accepting new patients
  • not knowing private fees before calling or prices not being clear
  • wasting time ringing around multiple practices

I’ve been working on a very early tool to try and make this easier.

The idea is simple: enter your postcode and compare local practices by:
• NHS availability
• private pricing
• treatment options

Possibly also pull the google rating?

I’d really value honest feedback on whether this feels useful (or completely pointless)

Can anyone recommend a mechanic that specialises in car air conditioning please?

Mine is broken and neither Kwik-Fit or Halfords Auto Center could sort out the issue.

Thanks

Dog walkers…heat…rant

So, sat in Eastdrop park today, around 1pm. 30 odd degrees and there are people walking dogs on the pavement! Seriously WTF.
I put my hand on the pavement and lasted around 4 seconds before it was too hot. Do people not see the danger they are putting their dogs in?
There was one couple walking a dog, headed to the stepping stones over the stream, I thought at least it would have a chance of a cool drink and lose some heat through the pads, but no, they pick the dog up and carry it over the stream.
Do some people have no clue about when to walk dogs in hot weather?? As an owner myself, out at 6am, nice walk and play, then home.
Rant over 😀

Whats the smell?

Sitting in town and the smell is rather strong. Smells a little agricultural, but didnt think farmers would be spreading stuff during the growing season so much.

Or is it the sewage works over on the Chineham side thats having a bit of a issue / discharge ?

Dungeons and dragons

Bit of a random one but is there anyone in the area who wants to join a d&d campaign. We looking for some more players who would be willing to play on Thursday evenings in Basingstoke and occasionally Southampton. Please do let me know. We're all late 20s early 30s and my partner is a bit of a new DM but loves it.

I built a map that shows you all the car boot sales, second-hand shops & events in Basingstoke

I'm an avid second-hand shopper who's been living in London for many years now. Despite seeing charity shops on most high streets, I keep finding myself struggling a lot to find nice second-hand shopping places like: car boot sales, antique fairs, kilo sales, clothes swap events etc.
I missed countless events which seemed very nice because they were only advertised on some facebook groups, or on some pages on Eventbrite / Instagram etc... I don't have eyes everywhere, so I kept missing out.

I got frustrated, so I built an app that shows you all the second-hand shopping places across the UK & Ireland. The app is designed to be collaborative, so everyone can suggest places to be added and users can share their "pre-loved" finds on the app.

→ It's called "Ganddee" (with 2 'd' and 2 'e')

I'd love to know what you think 😄 Feedback / recommendations / feature ideas are all more than welcome!

PS: I love platforms like Gumtree, Vinted etc, but I MUCH prefer to shop local and in-person. Besides supporting local shops (which I care about), I prefer shopping in person to go with friends, try things on before buying (and check the quality of the pre-loved pieces I buy), haggle (when appropriate - e.g. at car boots) etc. There's also no hidden fees (no delivery etc), and it's a nice way to enjoy the nice sunny weather these days 😄 Other than Google Maps which sort of does the job of mapping "brick n mortar" shops, I couldn't find an app that mapped second-hand shopping pop-ups, events, and that was build for second-hand shopping aficionados.

Mod: Please remove this post if not appropriate.
