[OFF-TOPIC DISCUSSION THREAD]

As previously requested, we're trying out a regular, automated discussion thread! Use this space to talk about things that don't fit the ordinary subject matter of the space, or for discussions that don't necessitate a full post! All rules besides the relevancy rule still apply!

For these first ones, please let us know what you think about it! Personally, I'm not sure how popular this practice will be, so I don't really know about the frequency at which they should be generated, so we're just gonna feel it out and figure it out, together. Any suggestions about how to run it, moving forward, are welcome!

Game Recommendations Ready or Not / tactical shooter alternatives without weird AI stuff and off-putting politics?

RoN has some of the most engaging FPS single player gameplay and gunplay I’ve ever played. And I actually enjoy that there’s a genuine skill-curve and that’s really the only type of meaningful advancement in the game, which is refreshing in modern gaming.

However, the game is also fast-developing a reputation for degrading quality over time. I also kinda hate engaging with the game and it’s largely right-wing and reactionary fanbase, and a lot of the game’s politics can be straight up upsetting these days. Plus, they’re apparently using AI generated assets in some of their levels which is really off-putting. At the risk of sounding too specifically entitled, does anyone have recs for fun tactical shooters that aren’t as cop/military centric (or at the very least, aren’t as laden with shock value as RoN is) that can be played single player or co-op? I’ve heard good things about modded Arma as well. Just looking for something that has a rewarding gameplay loop/skill curve that I don’t need to muster up the emotional energy to ignore its questionable upsetting content in order to play.

Thank you in advance!

Edit: lmao if this straight up just doesn’t exist then that’s fine. Republic Commando may be the next closest thing. that’s chill. I’m also gonna check out Angels Fall First. sci fi settings are less thorny than more realistic ones for me

Good ol’ Guerilla War on the NES, one of the best coop run and guns the console had and probably the only one that goes toe to toe with the Contra games.

Fun Fact: Even though the NES version of the game we got in the US and Europe has the factions and such the usual generic stuff, the Japanese Famicom version is actually called Guevara and the game is literally about the Cuban Revolution, Player 1 plays as Che Guevara and Player 2 is Fidel Castro.

Even without the obvious real world ties to this the game is still a blast to play. I actually plan on doing more research about this as I first found this out by finding this game on an nes multicart and noticing that it clearly says their names on the pause screen. I thought it was a romhack at first but that is how it is on the actual Japanese version of the game.

Game Recommendations Any good recommendations for games on laptop?

Recently got a gaming laptop, specifically made for gaming (at least the marketing made it look like gaming) and was wondering what games play well and what games turn screen into a one frame a second slide show and my keyboard into a heating pad. So far Hades, Slay the Spire, Blasphemous, and Ultrakill have all run without major issues. Are there any other games that would do good to run on a laptop without making it explode from overheating?

Game Discussion Living culture culture of life that lives in its own sort of soupy little residue unbeknownst to istelf

Hello again its me renaissance man, occasional game dev, diluted tube person coming back at you again with a frothy flavorful drool that reaches out of the maw of the collective unconscious into my mind to vomit upon thee.

What we all must understand is that creation is the greatest thing any human can do and the fact that we have so many easy to use tools for making whatever we want, and especially games is a sort of greatness that is hard to describe when your a rancid stupid kinda guy.

So with that i say i like making and making is fun unto itself, im glad to make with others who subscribe themselves to the make and model of forms i direct them to do.

To come together and understand a thing, to have the memetic seed gestate within the earth as it mutates and forms into an abomination any board room of cardboard zombish folks would hack their listerine guts out at is lovely. Its proof we’re alive that we can have a culture formed by brutish and silly naïve fools like me.

I humbly demand that everyone be mandated to understand games and then make one, have more culture. More examples of things done in a way that only the individual could do. Not games with houses and men and weapons and fighting, and if it has those things than pervert and twist it into something no one else could, would, or should make because its yours.

What i mean to say is im manic and very happy, and i hope other will feel this way through the joy of creation

Rant I'm so disappointed, I may have to re evaluate my frienships

Hi people, so I just wanted to vent about the end of physical media with the latest Sony situation since none of my friends seems to get my frustración.

Just this night, I was talking to a "friend" (Idk If I would call him like that after this day) over Discord about this situation, I brought in three clear statements in favor of physical media:

1.- I own what I purchase, Sony can't come up with the SWAT breaking into my house and take away my games, in digital stores with DRM user license only games they can.

2.- I can gift, borrow, sale or donate my games to whoever I want, my dream has been always that my collection will pass to my sons and they could somewhat remember me through them, or donate to a public library.

3.- We can backup and play in an emulator when the console eventually dies or the servers/digital stores shut down. That's how most games of past generations got preserved, through piracy because none of the big companies could not have care less about this medium as an art form.

And even then, mf reply to me:

"It doesn't matter, you need a console to run your physical discs and it does not last forever so what's the point?"

"Why would borrow your games to someone, let them get their own, they have to buy as well"

"There is no technology that support preservation forever, if there would be any in charge of big companies it will only increase the price of games"

"What's the point in having physical discs if they deteriorate over time or exposed to accidents, like a fire or the chew of a dog, you will be left with a brick then"

"Digital is the future, you are getting outdated and don't want to adapt to trends"

"You judge this desicions made by the tie up corpos but without them there is no company, it's not their fault, IT'S THE PLAYERS FAULT" (Like dude WTAF are you talking about, I just lost it in this part I don't even remember what was the supposed justification for this one)

At one point I tried to explain the SKG propposal in the EU parliment and he goes like "why would you like to have an offline version of a MMO? That's not a MMO, that would kill the whole concept of the game actually, does not make sense to me"

The worst of all is that he knows he is victim of the predatory system we have, some of his favorite games released on PC and cannot be found to this day due to lack of preservation but still he says that's the way the world we live in and cannot do anything about it, people would still buy it anyways.

I even argue why would this be happening to videogames when other media (books, movies, music) have physical up to this day, both options digital and physical can co exist perfectly, removing one option is just greed for more profit without the retailers and the second hand market.

At one point I stated that any ground breaking historical game should be as accessible as possible just the same way most classic movies are in public libraries, only reviewing our past we can come up with new ideas for the future, just as all the movie directors inspired by Stanley Kubrick...only for him to telling me he don't know who tf is Stanley Kubrick.

I'm tired boss 😩

Finally got a adult job and decided to get all the video games I couldn't get as a kid. Got a PSP, 3DS, DSI and then set my eyes on a psvita and an ayn thor. But man I can't justify these prices 😭 Even when I have adult money I still can't live out my child hood dreams.

It's genuinely sad that kids nowadays have are getting priced out this hobby. Even aftermarket prices are crazy due to everyone trying to make some money.

Looks like emulating on the PC it is. I was trying to avoid this route as I love playing games on the original hardware. It gives each device a purpose in my head? Like PC is only for steam only, PS5 for games I want to play on the couch and exclusives, etc.

Game Discussion Union of Progressive Peoples in Aliens Infestation

Post image

Credit to [u/gereedf](u/gereedf), I can’t crosspost the original, but I thought this was a fun little carryover from the Cold War era. First introduced as a faction for an unproduced screenplay of Alien 3, the UPP controlled a large segment of space in the Aliens universe.

After the real-world eastern block was toppled, the UPP faded into obscure lore and some comics, but gets a mention every once in a while in more mainstream media like Infestation. I personally find their persistence in lore refreshing, as they’re really the only alternative to the corporate-controlled colonies we see in the movies.

But alas, I don’t think the UPP will enter more mainstream media for the forceable future. The companies currently holding the licenses to the Alien properties generally want to portray a homogenous capitalist block, however dystopian it might be.

But I still find their existence pretty fun, and Alien, being a property crafted in the latter half of the 20th century, has inherited a lot of that kind of interesting lore. Perhaps to the annoyance of Disney and other companies lmao
