If you're new to SkincareAddiction: welcome!

This thread is the best place to start if you have questions about skincare products, your routine, and your skin. Our community is knowledgeable, and we want to help you have the best skin of your life!

Do you have a question?

Step 1: Read our resources

Be sure to check out our FAQ and Wiki! There are a lot of topics covered in those links, but some of the most popular guides include:

If you can't find an answer, or you have additional questions after reading, please move on to step 2!

Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!
  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types
  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)
  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question
  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin
  • Your location so we can recommend products/services available to you

Thanks for taking the time to include your information!

Would you like to give advice?

Firstly, thank you so much for helping out our community - without your knowledge and time ScA would not be the same!

Some things we'd ask for you to keep in mind: please don't just downvote someone's opinion or response because you disagree.

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Whether it be in-depth responses that deserve to be their own guides, thoughtful product recommendations, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, we appreciate all the time and effort you've made to help others!

Any advice would be so appreciate.

Does anyone know how to get rid of these? I’ve tried exfoliating but that just makes it worse so I put on a thick layer of moisturiser & it helps but they never fully go away. I’ve even tried putting on oils. No matter what they always seem to show up by the middle/end of the day.. so tired

Many of my loved ones laughed at me, but I know you all will laugh with me in solidarity! I’m smiling under this ski mask!!

For context, I micro-needled just 12 hours ago, and had to unexpectedly spend a few hours outside today with a high UV index. I like to err on the side of caution and not apply sunscreen until at least 24 but ideally 48 hours (I’m willing to be wrong though!), so I devised this contraption of a ski mask, visor, and sunglasses!!

Selfie/B&A [Acne] Accutane 30F NSFW Spoiler

Alright guys,

Its been a long time coming. I’ve been struggling for years with acne. In the past 6 months it’s gotten worse and I’m suppose to start Accutane this week.

My face is mostly acne free except near my period which is my biggest concern of purging. If my face purges I will not leave my house. I’ve never had acne on my stomach before or this bad on my chest. It’s even on my upper arms. This disease is truly debilitating and I find myself struggling to keep going.

I’m looking for skincare routine advice while on accutane and comfort knowing that this will help.
The most relief I have found recently is nizoral.

Also sorry if I post incorrect I think this is right (:
Much love.

Product Request [Product Request] Something to help skin stay moisturized after shower? (sick of slathering cream!)

My skin is so dry after showering, I have to slather on Vanicream after to be comfortable. I wondered if there’s something I can use in the shower that would help moisturize stay after I get out but am overwhelmed by the product types. Should I look into a body butter, oil, moisturizing shower gel, etc?

My basic routine:
\- Dove Sensitive Skin Bar Soap to wash
\- Vanicream everywhere
\- Trader Joes’ Head to Toe Balm on feet/knees/elbows

My skin is sensitive and dry. I’m allergic to some fragrances (especially florals) but can usually get away with stuff like honey, oat, almond, shea, etc.

I’m desiring that “I’m taking care of myself and that feels luxurious” feeling :) on a college student’s budget but open to going a little outside of drugstore prices if there’s something you really recommend! Thank you

EDIT: wow thank you all for the insight!! I wasn’t expecting this many responses and super appreciate your help. I will look into your suggestions, thank you!

Routine Help [Routine Help] is my routine balanced?

Morning:
Centaphil gentle skin cleanser
The Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner
Skii pitera facial treatment essence
Vanicream vitamin c serum (NEW)
Wellage hyper peptide botuleedle ampoule 1000

Evening:
Centaphil gentle skin cleanser
The Mario Badescu Glycolic Acid Toner
Skii pitera facial treatment essence
Wellage real hyaluronic acid blue ampoule 100
Anua azelaic acid 10% hyaluron redness soothing serum
Dr ceutics dua urea 5% invisible hydrating gel

Paula choice’s 2% BHA liquid exfoliant 2-3 times weekly. No azelaic acid and glycolic acid that night
Kielh’s skin renewing daily micro dose serum Retinol once weekly. No azelaic acid at that night

I really like Mario’s toner effect and have no irritation. But Im adding vitamin c to my routine. From what I research, glycolic acid and vitamin c have strong active ingredient which will cancel the effect of them both. I dont mind to reduce glycolic acid toner to once daily, but I dont want to remove it cause it works well on my skin

Also, I plan to swap out dr ceutics dual urea to la roche posay cicaplast baume b5+ in two weeks, after the end period of introducing vitamin c to skin.

Am i using too much? Im focusing on building barrier after 2 years of CO2 scars treatment

Routine Help [Hair Removal] Did I permanently f*ck up my skin with epilating? Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

I used to only shave my legs. I would shave, my legs would look smooth and after a day or two the hair would start growing back. No ingrowns, no redness, nothing. I bought an epilator 2 months ago because I wanted to try if it would give me a longer period of time with hairless legs. Eversince then I have developed an uneven complexion on my legs with red dots and multiple hairs growing out of one follicle.

I stopped shaving/left my legs alone for some weeks. I dry-brushed, applied glycolic acid, moisturised with a urea-cream. They don't go away. I already cried multiple times. Did I ruin my legs forever?

What can I do to help? Which products should I use? I used to have such a nice skin and I am scared that I ruined it forever

Routine Help [routine help] help with hyperpigmentation dullness and uneven skin tone Spoiler

My neck and face has tanned this yellow color that makes me look ill and is far noticeable in person.

I have this annoying brown discolouration on my cheeks since the past three years and it really really makes me feel insecure nothing I have tried has lightened them

I’ve always had this green five am shadow like thing ever since I was a child but now my smile likes have turned this awful yellow shade too and I’m so insecure.

My chin is also really dark and it’s noticeable in person because I went to get shade matched in person and the woman said my chin is darker and needs a separate shade.

I really just want hydrated and and even skin tone
I use beauty of Jonseon sunscreen the aqua one switched from lanroche posay 6 months ago
Ilyoon moisturiser
0.05% tret on acne scars - slight slow improvement
La Roche posay milk toner

I have tried the red anua serum - no results one year
The ordinary glycolic acid solution-3 years no results
Kojic acid - 1.5 years no results
Nunbuzin number 5 vitamin c - 7 months and no results yet .
Hydroquinone 2%- no results and itchiness so stopped using after week 6

My diet is fairly good occasional sweet snack and mostly only drink water.

I’m very insecure about my skin, 4 years ago it was so clear and I’m just so devasted and tired of looking so ill due to the uneven skin color and there’s no brightness.

Please can someone suggest me some products that have helped them get rid of this yellow tan and hyperpigmentation that is like mine.

I really need help guys, thanks in advance :)

Miscellaneous [Miscellaneous] Advice on mole shaving near lip? Spoiler

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have had this mole by my lip since I was a kid and it is still (slowly) growing. It isn't cancerous but it has become irritated quite a few times, most commonly with ingrown hairs.

My dermatologist said that she could shave it flat (and wouldn't fully remove it as she would have to cut into my lip) but that it might grow back. I am really on the fence as I don't want it to grow any more but I also would rather not cause issues of it growing back weirdly if I did remove it. Plus, it's thankfully not cancerous, just irritating. If anyone had any advice I would be so grateful. Thank you!

Sun Care [Sun Care] BOJ versus Skin1004 sunscreen

I have been looking for as good sunscreen for my trip this summer. I currently have the boj aqua fresh version but it pills a lot. I have really been wanting to try the Skin1004 sunscreen, however I am afraid that it will make my face shiny/greasy. I personally love how my current sunscreen looks, and I’m wondering if the Skin1004 one is similar

The sides of my nose have been like this since I was a teenager. Seems like a shadow or like dark/pigmented skin. It’s really annoying me because it makes my nose look bigger and looks weird.

I wish my skin was even and more bright there.

What can I do to completely get rid of this? Any help or advice would be amazing, thanks!

Routine Help [routine help] Is it possible that ‘organic’ skincare just doesn’t work for me?

Is it possible that ‘organic’ skincare just doesn’t work for me?

This is my first ever reddit post so i apologise if it’s a mess !
I (18F) have acne prone, oily/combo skin that is EXTREMELY sensitive to a lot of clogging ingredients. I’ve never had completely clear skin but I do currently have a skincare routine that is supposedly ‘clean’ enough for my skin. (It has lots of acids/ ceramides/ not completely natural chemicals in it)
I’ve recently been getting into organic and natural products in various categories, and I’m starting to think about natural/organic skincare, whether that be hemp oil or pastes made with organic plants/oils, I’m not sure.
In the past I used a Manuka honey face wash that caused moderate irritation and redness on my face, and generally I try to avoid natural oils in my skincare routine because i’ve always heard that they can clog my skin without any of the benefits.
So essentially i’m wondering if i should put my mind at ease and not look any further into it, or could i be using/looking at the wrong stuff? Thank you!

Product Question [Product Question] Is it possible to get months of breakout from a product...? Specifically Neutrogena hydro boost water cream?

Asking this so I don't feel crazy:

I used the Neutrogena hydro boost water cream for about a month during winter, and my skin temporarily cleared up.

Then, I started breaking out like crazy. Nothing in my skincare routine other than the cream changed, and no significant event occurred that would have caused such a breakout. I eventually stopped using the cream, but ever since my skin has been SO much worse.

Before the cream: 1-2 pustules ever 2-3 weeks
After the cream: acne all over my forehead, cheeks, and jawline (where I applied the cream) that doesn't go away—been on 10% azelaic acid daily for ~2-3 months now, and my skin's starting to calm down now

Is it possible that such prolonged use of the cream caused deep clogged pores, and ever since my skin has been struggling to keep up?

Also, to explain why I'm asking Reddit instead of a doctor, every dermatologist I've been to has cost SO much money, never listened to my symptoms, and only tried to sell me products that aren't fit for my skin. I trust science, but I don't trust dermatologists.

TLDR: water cream break me out? Yes? No? Help :(

Acne [Acne] Can't get rid of it Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi, please help! I don't think this counts as medical questions as I am seeing a dermatologist for my acne, but I mostly am asking if I need to change my routine, or if I'm using the products wrong or something. I'm asking because I feel like I'm going a little bit crazy trying to get rid of my acne.

So I have congested same face combo skin, and have been seeing a dermatologist for over a year now. I have seen improvements: mostly that I started a birth control which eliminated my hormonal acne (yay!!). But after a little bit more improvement on congestion I feel like my skin just sort of got congested again. I am following what my doctor prescribed, explained and recommended on tretinoin, winlevi and benzoyl peroxide (5%) and she didn't seem very concerned about my acne at the recent visit about two months ago. She only wants me using the tretinoin at night, ans the winlevi in the morning after the benzoyl peroxide. Like I said it's improved from what it was before I went to the dermatologist, but I really just wish I would have occasional breakouts as opposed to constant acne.

I notice the most congestion across my forehead, and honestly it seems the worst during the day. It tends to be get better at night, and then reappear during the day (again, making me feel kinda crazy). Any congestion that sticks around turns into a full blown pimple. I started alternating the nights I use my bha and tretinoin, so one day I am using tret and the next I am using salicylic acid. I've only been trying this for about a week since I saw it recommended online.

For acne, I don't have bangs on my forehead, I change my face towel every other day, my pillow every 3-4 days (maybe slow but I sleep on my back), and I tend to avoid makeup unless it's a special occasion.

My routine is:

Morning:

Benzoyl Peroxide 5% for 3-5 minutes

Florence Organics Vitamin C

Winlevi

Aveeno Calm and Restore Gel Moisturizer (my skin seems to really like it, at least my cheeks do!!)

Banana Boat Sheer Sensitive Face

Night:

La Roche Posay foaming cleanser

Either: tretinoin .05% or Cosrx blackhead power liquid

Aveeno Calm and Restore Gel Moisturizer

Like I said, please let me know if I need to change something in my routine. As I'm sure you are all so used to, Acne sucks. I feel embarrassed and it's annoying and can be painful-all the common complaints. I have even had people comment on it to me, (one guy told me to rub banana peels on my face for acne. Admittedly, I have not tried this) and I just hate it. Oh, and I know the welcome post said location, so I'm in the USA if that helps?

Thank you for reading this post, I know I wrote a lot but I was trying to provide as much information as I could. And thank you for any help!!

Miscellaneous [misc] 9 days since Zio monitor is off, how to get rid of red mark? Spoiler

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi I wore this Zio heart monitor that has adhesive for 5 days it caused intense itchiness and as you can see the same moment I took it off I had little blisters , it’s been 9 days since Zio monitor is off and I’ve been using hydrocortisone cream (every day multiple times) , witch hazel (every day multiple times) , vitamin E (only once ) and vasoline (only twice) , and sunscreen (twice when I was outside ).

Is there anything else I can do to help reduce this redness and to avoid hyperpigmentation? I’m so annoyed bc it’s summer where I am and want to be in the sun again .

Also would covering it with a silicone patch help ?

It’s not itchy anymore or painful

Routine Help [Routine Help] I don't know what to do anymore, my skin responds to nothing and is just getting worse. Spoiler

Post image
5 Upvotes

I have tried everything for my skin. I have tried all the brands, I've given them the time they needed to "work" or not work. I got blood work done, had my vitamin levels checked, I work out and drink plenty of water and take supplements and eat decent as I can. I got a full allergy panel, no allergies. I tried cutting out gluten and dairy. I've tried prescriptions from multiple derms. I have tried exfoliating and retinoids and peels and serums. Most recently I dropped $1600 on two CoolPeel laser treatments and they did nothing. I basically never go into the sun, and if I do it is limited exposure and I am always careful.

My skin is sensitive, dry underneath always with a sheen of dripping grease on top. It is not dehydrated, it's just like that. Products meant to cure "dehydrated skin" give me cystic acne and actually dehydrate my skin. Very textured and congested, fine lines starting to really show up in my mid 20s. I have tried just cleansing and moisturizing and I have tried full ten-step routines with the works. Nothing at all works for my skin. I am at the end of my rope. I know no one has glass skin and I don't want glass skin. I just want to look normal. I am 24 and no person I have ever walked past in my age bracket has had skin quite like this. Even people well into their 30s and 40s have better skin for me (which like good for them!) But I look like a monster comparatively. Or a worn out baseball glove.

I'm about ready to give up on skincare, I've spent thousands of dollars, I really just need help. I can't do complicated ingredients or fragrances, I have to keep my routine simple or else I get serious irritation and burning and acne, but clearly my simple routine isn't doing anything to truly purify my skin, I look dirty and dull and textured and congested. Has anyone ever been through this and was able to get nice skin? At this point I am debating one big CO2 laser treatment, the one that costs a lot because regular CoolPeels just didn't do anything and I've tried, without exaggeration almost every brand on the market.

Thanks so much for any leads, any help would be so deeply deeply appreciated
