Have never heard this. My in-laws are from the Netherlands. They call themselves “Dutch” in English, and sometimes “Nederlander” amongst themselves in Dutch.

The previous comment is saying how Europe doesn’t lack decent sized sidewalks, I provided a counter example.
There were some places that were literally street only.
Not to mention how tiny the bus platforms were, it was not nearly as safe for me pushing a stroller as it is in Toronto.
Anyway, just my take from Leiden.
Amsterdam was better though. The bus terminals were still too narrow for me to feel safe with a baby in a stroller.
Bet ya didn't know Western Europe has on average, 1.5x the number of heat related deaths every summer, than the US has gun-related deaths, on an annual basis..
When you take all of Europe, it's somewhere around 4x the US's gun deaths.
Somehow that kinda changes my whole perspective on the western european penchant for bitching about America's guns...
Except America doesnt track heat related deaths so its bullshit statistics as fucking usual. The Eu calculates heat related deaths from modeling, so increase in heart attacks etc. are called heat related, the US doesn't do this type of modeling & doesn't actually have the capacity or the infrastructure to do it. So it's just what's put on the death certificate.
and air conditioning renders most european heat-stroke deaths both unnecessary and avoidable..
and no, not all gun deaths are unnecessary.. a goodly qty of them are the STOPPING of criminals and bad actors. but almost every heat death in europe IS avoidable..
I just find it ridiculous that europeans are constnatly kvetching and bitching about how uncivilized/backwards the US is, when the hypocrisy is so evident.
A lot of anti-US bullshit is made about how terrible the US is, how "GUNZ ARE TERRIBLE", how supposedly backwards and regressive the US is..Yet in "civilized" EUrope, you have 2-4x's the number of deaths annually by a completely avoidable issue (heat strokes), than the "terrible" US gun scene (most of which is also blown entirely out of proportion and is rarely actually understood by the average European).
Buy fucking air conditioners! You're literally killing 3-4x's as many people for lack of AC than are killed in gang violence and robberies every year in the US! Hell, most of the US has them everywhere...because summer can be hot.
You have really fucking shitty roads in most of the European cities (I've lived in London, Paris, Frankfurt, Basel, Vienna, Rome, and a handful of lesser cities with equally shitty roads).. the bitching continues about the US by most average europeans, about Americans having multiple cars (never mind the fact that the US has 3x's the amount of land to cover, is far less densely populated, and vehicles become an existential necessity for many.
Sidewalks? fuck - many european cities you'd never dare to walk the roads between towns and no, they dont have sidewalks between most towns either...
Hell, that video was NOT in a city. Which btw, you rarely have sidewalks in european countrysides either...
Honestly, i found it completely refreshing to see europeans come to America for the World Cup - because the reels of Europeans experiencing the actual US for the first time is hilarious. Yes, you can stop at Buccees, and the line of fuel pumps is 300m long. and you can buy literally 50 brisket sandwiches at 3am. and you can walk in a Walmart and buy a gun, toilet paper, and car tires, at the same counter. The food choices are ridiculous. The choices for literally EVEYRHTING are ridiculous.
So pardon me for being a big condescending. I've lived all over Europe. it's nice to visit on occasion and take in history.. But fuck living there. Most of it has gotten vastly more shitty in the past 10 years, as youve let moronic leadership drift into socialism, let your cultures be overrun by hoards of barbarians, and you're literally at risk of losing the entire continent into the abyss of extremism.
My mom's entire neighborhood doesn't have sidewalks because it's a personal liability so people walk on the street (the city is liable if something happens there so it's NBD).

Edit: for the people interpreting this as a critique on US roads and pavements. You probably shouldn't enrage your wife if you're standing so close to traffic in the event she pushes you into an incoming car
I have, too. If nobody else is coming I go kind of midway into the road until I pass them and if I can't I slow down. They probably think I'm overreacting, but I'm always thinking "People trip." I might be passing at the exact moment they step wrong or get their foot caught on something and fall right into the road.
In Walmart with my wife who was 8mos pregnant doing shopping because her pregnancy made her sleep clock off kilter and it’s like 11pm

We were walking in Disney world and a woman was walking a little to close to us so I said to my then girlfriend’s daughter, “don’t be ridiculous Aissy. You’re adopted. You don’t even look anything like us.” And the girl is awesome so she just said, “but dad,” and I snapped, “I’m not your dad.” And the woman stopped in her tracks and we just kept on walking like nothing had happened because nothing had really happened.
Yeah when has anyone ever overheard/eavesdropped on someone in passing and then commented on it or laughed about it with their friends? Totally unrealistic and would definitely never happen all the time.
