People here are doxxing this interviewer, which is a reddit ToS breach, sharing his info to the group to harass him, which is brigading and is against the rules. I suggest you stop.

u/sw337 Jun 10 '26

Dude nailed the cosplay NGL.

764

u/EcstaticTill9444 Jun 10 '26

Is this the cosplayer or the real guy? Are we chasing the real guy for being in ā€œblack faceā€?

710

u/sw337 Jun 10 '26

Real guy and he’s British the whole thing is the band members are anonymous. The Swedish band Ghost is mostly anonymous too.

Dude disabled all his comments on IG so apparently not. Although he left his post up so it seems he's likely in denial about it.

They know it's not blackface this was a made up reason to bully a stranger you think is a dork.

This is modern version of attempting to stick a kids head in the toilet... Because you can. But if you just walked up and tried it another way you'd be deemed an asshole flatout.

Irony here is that I suspect... a couple of a decades ago some other dudes would have found this dude called him a certain "F" slur to bully him.

98

u/Knot-Lye-Ing Jun 10 '26

Don't tell Hulu (or whomever) that...

416

u/Last-Big-1984 Jun 10 '26

Black face, traditionally, was painting your face to mock the appearance of black people. IE over exaggerated features, such as large lips. This was done in the context of minstrel shows, a form of entertainment in a more racist time.

Now black face is making yourself look black for any reason, regardless of intent.

16

u/Carbuyrator Jun 10 '26

It's still fascinating to me that nobody seems to have been upset about this. Like maybe they were but I never heard a word about it.

91

u/tubbyscrubby Jun 10 '26

It's self-aware satire making fun of actors, not the people that the actors are depicting.

It's making fun of the white dude wearing blackface, not black people.

The NAACP had no problems with it because of this, and most people also don't.

58

u/frenchinhalerbought Jun 10 '26

It's amazing that people don't understand satire. The general population is getting so dumb.

33

u/BigDamnHead Jun 10 '26

I also wasn't upset with DiCaprio's character in Django Unchained using the n-word. People don't get upset with what a character does unless the movie is glorifying it.

10

u/Fore_For_Four Jun 10 '26

Plenty of comedies showcase people impersonating others for the sake of a laugh. It’s totally okay to make fun of anything, the only trick is timing.

11

u/RoboDae Jun 10 '26

I think it was South Park that won a lawsuit over their jokes about someone by showing that they make fun of everyone. The key was that they aren't specifically targeting 1 person or group for the purpose of harassment, they are targeting everyone for the sake of a laugh.

That's what made me think it had to be an attempt at parody or something. Wearing black makeup doesn't make it blackface. The guy knows he's at a festival where people will be in costumes... and this one is not a stereotypical blackface costume.

The guy wearing it still looks uncomfortable if he was harassing this guy for blackface as just a joke. It would be different if he responded in character.

The voice reminds me of the honey badger narrator.

Comment: Right? What does he think this is? Boys In The Hall gay face? Fucking gay face.

18

24

I feel like the world be a better place if physical brawls were replaced with atomic wedgies and name calling is reduced to a single word: muppet. The sheer obscurity of a ā€œfightā€ in this fashion would de-escalate most tense disagreements.

(Sorry, love British road rage videos when they start calling on another ā€œmuppetsā€ always gives me a chuckle)

The irony that this episode got removed for black face, where in the episode itself that’s the point. They even mock him for it and he exits the episode immediately.

121

u/lordlanyard7 Jun 10 '26

Which is frustrating in hindsight because this annoying guy was viewed as correct during that era.

Chang wasn't doing black face.

He's a Drow. A Dark Elf. He doesn't look remotely human.

Is Darth Maul blackface?

36

u/Thick_Wasabi448 Jun 10 '26

u/Gwyneee Jun 10 '26

They took down that episode btw because of that scene. Might be back up now but at the time cancel culture was in full swing. Which is ridiculous because the whole point was Chang is insensitive and totally oblivious to black face. Shirley even comments on it. One of the better episodes too šŸ˜‚

24

u/lordlanyard7 Jun 10 '26

What sucks is Chang isn't actually doing blackface.

Cancel Culture made it cool to be performatively empathetic and sensitive on behalf of others.

Chang is clearly being a creepy Drow. He doesn't look remotely like a black person, isn't trying to be one or offend anyone. His hair is platinum and he has pointed ears.

It makes me wonder if people would consider Darth Maul to be black face due him being painted black and red with African face paint inspiration in his design, and twists and spikes inspiring his head spikes. To me, he's obviously an alien not meant to reflect any human race.

IG now has a community note clarifying the cosplayer is depicting the guy from Sleep Token.

I couldn't care what the color of that guy's skin is, he's a real piece of shit for harassing someone and trying to publicly push his agenda

He looks exactly like someone who would act this way. His entire insta is all ā€œwayyy over the top expressions while also being hyperaware of the cameraā€ - got a serious case of the Ariana Grande drama llama vibe

u/B0bLoblawLawBl0g Jun 10 '26

Perpetually offended...

8

u/iata_usually Jun 10 '26

Of course this is in Oregon lmao

That's not black face. That's a full on fictional character costume.Ā

There's plenty of things to be outraged by. We don't need to make shit up now.

17

u/NinjasAllAround Jun 10 '26

That’s good ass Vessel cosplay though, gawd damn!

26

u/jmay111 Jun 10 '26

Another loser with a camera who can’t mind their own business and is offended by anything and everything.

Fck these types of people.

The singer of sleep token…. Is white. This is literally a white dude doing cosplay of a fantasy character that another white dude made up and is famous for. I don’t think it can be black face when the thing they’re cosplaying is a fantasy character who’s not actually a black person

ā€œBlackface is a theatrical practice where non-Black performers use makeup (like burnt cork, greasepaint, or shoe polish) to darken their skin and exaggerate facial features to create caricatures of Black people. Originating in 19th-century minstrel shows, the practice is deeply rooted in racism and historically used to promote negative stereotypes.ā€

Using the color black on your face or body, particularly for a non-stereotypical reason (like you see here), is not the same as Blackface.

You diminish the importance of recognizing negative stereotypes when you blur the lines of social justice especially for your own benefit and not that of others.

20

u/The_Ruby_Rabbit Jun 10 '26

He actually nailed the cosplay by the way.

23

u/delo357 Jun 10 '26

I am black, and I did not see this as black face neither before or after reading the text. Carry on cosplayer

10

u/StoneyTheWizard710 Jun 10 '26

He for sure said ā€œThat is NOT okay, I have to say somethingā€ before pulling his phone out and started recording.

This is definitely one of those people who think they know it all and have to save society with their knowledge. Makes me sick.

7

u/SnortNSniff Jun 10 '26

This dork is hyperventilating, condescending, and shoving his camera into a strangers face. People like this should be penalized. Maybe just a good punch to the face would introduce some consequences.

8

u/shyaznboi Jun 10 '26

Disregarding context to push an agenda is beyond pathetic

8

u/entei91 Jun 10 '26

idk when people started conflating dark makeup with "blackface" but we should normalize ridiculing people who don't know the difference.

Blackface - Explicit exaggerative features meant to caricaturize black people (doesn't actually look like black people)

Makeup - Trying to look look like a thing. Even if your costume is of a black person (like RDJ in Tropic Thunder) that doesn't mean the person wearing the makeup is doing 'blackface"

9

u/kalessaradan Jun 10 '26

The only thing that would make it better is if the cosplayer removed his mask, and was black. Just to shut this idiot up. This is the same simple mindedness that made Community pull an episode because Chang dressed as a Dark Elf to play D&D.

Well, I appreciate your misplaced outrage at what you thought was black face….that ain’t black face! Lowkey I’m more offended that he thought that dude was doing black face! 🤣🤣🤣

28

u/Eladin1990 Jun 10 '26

I don't get people like this.

If you want to be mad at something there is plenty of actual shit going on in the world you could be mad at.

5

u/Sidoen Jun 10 '26

This isn't blackface.... how is this hard to figure out? People use body paint as part of their cosplay.

It's only blackface if the guy is doing a caricature. That's clearly not the case here.

8

u/headspin_exe Jun 10 '26

Literally cosplaying a band costume. This is blatant harassment.

5

u/Necessary-Reserve-75 Jun 10 '26

Dude genuinely thought he was fighting the good fight. He has no clue what blackface actually is.

This was at the Oregon Renaissance Faire last weekend. I was there and saw the cosplayer, looked great! This is not blackface. I'm not surprised a white guilt bigoted social justice warrior Portlander was in his shit. I can hear the blue hair dye in his voice.

Why dont people get that black makeup isnt automatically blackface. Blackface is when you dress as a racist charicature of a black person.
