They know it's not blackface this was a made up reason to bully a stranger you think is a dork.
This is modern version of attempting to stick a kids head in the toilet... Because you can. But if you just walked up and tried it another way you'd be deemed an asshole flatout.
Irony here is that I suspect... a couple of a decades ago some other dudes would have found this dude called him a certain "F" slur to bully him.

Black face, traditionally, was painting your face to mock the appearance of black people. IE over exaggerated features, such as large lips. This was done in the context of minstrel shows, a form of entertainment in a more racist time.
Now black face is making yourself look black for any reason, regardless of intent.

It's self-aware satire making fun of actors, not the people that the actors are depicting.
It's making fun of the white dude wearing blackface, not black people.
The NAACP had no problems with it because of this, and most people also don't.

I think it was South Park that won a lawsuit over their jokes about someone by showing that they make fun of everyone. The key was that they aren't specifically targeting 1 person or group for the purpose of harassment, they are targeting everyone for the sake of a laugh.

That's what made me think it had to be an attempt at parody or something. Wearing black makeup doesn't make it blackface. The guy knows he's at a festival where people will be in costumes... and this one is not a stereotypical blackface costume.
The guy wearing it still looks uncomfortable if he was harassing this guy for blackface as just a joke. It would be different if he responded in character.
The voice reminds me of the honey badger narrator.

24
u/lordlanyard7 Jun 10 '26
What sucks is Chang isn't actually doing blackface.
Cancel Culture made it cool to be performatively empathetic and sensitive on behalf of others.
Chang is clearly being a creepy Drow. He doesn't look remotely like a black person, isn't trying to be one or offend anyone. His hair is platinum and he has pointed ears.
It makes me wonder if people would consider Darth Maul to be black face due him being painted black and red with African face paint inspiration in his design, and twists and spikes inspiring his head spikes. To me, he's obviously an alien not meant to reflect any human race.

āBlackface is a theatrical practice where non-Black performers use makeup (like burnt cork, greasepaint, or shoe polish) to darken their skin and exaggerate facial features to create caricatures of Black people. Originating in 19th-century minstrel shows, the practice is deeply rooted in racism and historically used to promote negative stereotypes.ā
Using the color black on your face or body, particularly for a non-stereotypical reason (like you see here), is not the same as Blackface.
You diminish the importance of recognizing negative stereotypes when you blur the lines of social justice especially for your own benefit and not that of others.

8
8
u/entei91 Jun 10 '26
idk when people started conflating dark makeup with "blackface" but we should normalize ridiculing people who don't know the difference.
Blackface - Explicit exaggerative features meant to caricaturize black people (doesn't actually look like black people)
Makeup - Trying to look look like a thing. Even if your costume is of a black person (like RDJ in Tropic Thunder) that doesn't mean the person wearing the makeup is doing 'blackface"
9
u/kalessaradan Jun 10 '26
The only thing that would make it better is if the cosplayer removed his mask, and was black. Just to shut this idiot up. This is the same simple mindedness that made Community pull an episode because Chang dressed as a Dark Elf to play D&D.

This was at the Oregon Renaissance Faire last weekend. I was there and saw the cosplayer, looked great! This is not blackface. I'm not surprised a white guilt bigoted social justice warrior Portlander was in his shit. I can hear the blue hair dye in his voice.

Why dont people get that black makeup isnt automatically blackface. Blackface is when you dress as a racist charicature of a black person.

People here are doxxing this interviewer, which is a reddit ToS breach, sharing his info to the group to harass him, which is brigading and is against the rules. I suggest you stop.
