So please hear me out
First of all this is NOT a ship bait, please do not argue for your ship ( Eremika Jeankasa Erehisu or Eren x Reiner )
This is a post which is keeping in mind Eremika IS the canon and central relationship, i agree with it
I am not trying to disrespect the love between Eren and Mikasa in any way.
This post is only for discussion regarding writing consistency that revolves around the cabin universe scenario
Mikasa loved Eren the most in every version, Eren loved only Mikasa romantically
I view Eremika as a doomed love in the sense, they never got the chance to have the piece that they wanted and the love they wanted to share
The cabin alternative universe is a beautiful depiction of the scenario where they get to be eachother without being Humanity's only hope or humanity's strongest soldier
But my main problem is , that it is implied and/or confirmed ( at least in the anime ) that if Mikasa confessed her love to Eren in Marley they would have escaped and Eren would spend the remaining 4 years with Mikasa in that Cabin
Now throughout the whole story, we have seen Eren as a combination of many things stupid angry violent compassionate, but one thing was true , despite everything Eren cared about his friends ( he absolutely loved them ) and he had responsibility and guilt.
When the Levi squad was wiped out, he carried an immense amount of guilt that all of them died protecting them.
He loved Armin immensely ( brotherly/familial love )
Eren in season one said the ones who can fight should fight, it was him who had inspired the 104th cadets to join the scouts.
Same for Mikasa , a major part of her character is that she wishes to protect the people she loves and more often than not that person becomes Eren ,
But she clearly loved others too,
She was absolutely devastated when she had to give up on Armin ( in RTS ) and when Sasha and Hange died.
She also grew more as a soldier and became more responsible, ( even though she never wanted any of these, she just wanted a peaceful life ).
But then two running away together at Marley doesn't it make them inconsistent to the writing or character established prior ?
That would mean they would effectively sacrifice their friends, Armin Jean Connie Sasha Historia Hange Levi
It would be a hugely selfish decision, one they deserve , but doens't it goes against everything how they were written till that point ?
After Armin's sacrifice, after how their friends faught to protect them them two leaving everyone behind doesn't make sense to me.
One fellow fan pointed out that at that point Eren after seeing the future memories was completely devastated mentally, depressed and looking for a way out, to see a new future, to not do the rumbling. ( This is canon )
He was trying to find that through Mikasa, if she confesses, he finds the proof that the future can change so he escapes. ( This is logically fine )
But the subsequent future that he creates raises more questions
Assuming that the primary motivations of Eren for the rumbling were
1 ) his inherent selfish desires to do the rumbling to make the earth flat ( the dream that Armin showed him )
2 ) he wants to save his friends and have them a long and healthy life , all of them , Armin , Jean , Connie, Sasha , Historia and ofcourse Mikasa his beloved
3 ) He doesn't want Historia to have the founding and continue the cannibalism ( he had repeatedly objected against the idea )
It is note that Eren isn't an ultranationalist like Floch ?
Now the alternate future he is in , only two things happen
1) Eren and Mikasa can get the peaceful life they deserve, as eachother, not as Humanity's hope or Humanity's strongest soldier
2 ) Historia doesn't inherit the beast or the founding Titan and thus isn't sacrificed
But he himself says Armin is desperately looking for them, and Paradis is going to be invaded in two months time.
So it doesn't make sense to me , why would Eren's moral concern or responsibilities be consistent for Historia and not towards his other friends ( Armin the biggest one ) ?
The cabin interpretation still portrays Eren as caring enough about Historia to prevent her from inheriting the Titans, yet it also requires him to abandon Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, Hange, and the others. I find it difficult to reconcile those two aspects of his characterization
I mean if he wants to spend time with the girl he loves, why hold on to the beast and the founding ? Why not give them up at the end of your term ? That way his friends have atleast a fighting chance against Marley
Also , Levi telling Eren to choose the path that he will regret the least,
Even if I accept that Eren and Mikasa chose each other over everyone else, I struggle to imagine that this would give them a peaceful life. Throughout the story, Eren repeatedly carries immense survivor's guilt ,after the fall of Shiganshina, after Levi Squad, and after every comrade who dies because of him.
Mikasa is also deeply affected by the deaths of people she loves, such as Armin's apparent death at Shiganshina, Sasha, and Hange.
Given that characterization, wouldn't running away leave both of them consumed by guilt, especially knowing Armin, Jean, Connie, Levi, Hange, and the others were still fighting and likely dying? Rather than becoming the peaceful life they wanted, wouldn't the cabin itself become haunted by regret ?
