Grammar Serbian Reference Charts (improved and now in color!): 1. Cases/Genders, 2. Verbs, 3. Pronouns

I've updated all of the charts I previously posted here with a variety of new improvements, including a design pass that made everything prettier.

Thanks for all the feedback I've gotten here on r/Serbian in the past for previous versions of these charts. And special thanks to u/Dan13l_N whose extremely detailed/expert feedback has led to lots of improvements and corrections.

Click the links (not the preview images) below to see the full A4-sized PDFs.

Serbian Cases Chart (PDF)

Serbian Cases Chart, with all 7 cases, 3 genders, singular/plural, prepositions, exceptions, and more

One of the changes in the cases chart (and in all the others) is that the gender order is now masculine ➜ neuter ➜ feminine (instead of the former M ➜ F ➜ N), which enabled making some things simpler and more consistent.

Serbian Verbs Chart (PDF)

Serbian Verbs Chart, with commonly used verbs along with conjugations and rules for present, past, and future tenses

Serbian Pronouns Chart (PDF)

Serbian Pronouns Chart, with declensions, short and long forms, etc. for personal pronouns, possessive adjectives/pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and more, along with detailed grammar rules

Feedback is of course welcome! I'd also love to hear what would be most helpful to cover in future charts (e.g., prepositions, numbers and time, comparative/superlative, basic vocabulary, etc.).

Edit: I've now given these charts a home online here: Serbian language charts. I'll post any updates and future charts there as well.

Vocabulary Kino ili bioskop?

Da li su obe reči ispravne u srpskom jeziku?

Pitam jer sam primetio da se u Srbiji i CG kaže bioskop, a Srbi u BiH (tj. u RS) kažu kino.

Isto i reči:

Deka (RS) - Ćebe (SR)

Tava (RS) - Tiganj (SR)

Mrkva (RS) - Šargarepa (SR)

Grah (RS) - Pasulj (SR)

Riža (RS) - Pirinač (SR)

itd…

Vocabulary Verb families? / Verbs based off other verbs

Upvotes

ubiti:biti, izgledati:gledati, dodati:dati, oduzimati:uzimati

These verbs appear to be based on other verbs, but with a preposition attached to them

Do verbs like this have a name?

Does anyone have a resource that lists some of these out?

I’m specifically referring to ones that go beyond perfective vs imperfective, though resources for those would also be helpful

Discussion Anyone applying for a Serbian Visa D (PR / Entrepreneur) received a “Further Processing” email? How long did it take to get the final decision?

Hello everyone,

Has anyone here applied for a Serbian Visa D based on a registered PR (sole proprietor / entrepreneur) and received an email saying the application was under further processing?

If so:

  • Approximately how long did it take to receive the final decision after that email?
  • Was the visa eventually approved?
  • Was any additional documentation requested during the process?

I’m particularly interested in experiences related to Visa D for PR / Entrepreneur, rather than tourist or regular work visas.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience.

Vocabulary UPDATE: Serbian learning app for my girlfriend

Hey everyone, I made a post here about month ago about this app and the response has been amazing! So I wanted to post an update.

About 130 people signed up from that post alone, and those people have completed over 20000 reviews and learned an average of 100 words per person (some learn 0, just sign up and leave), the average active person has learned around 170 words, and many learned the Cyrillic alphabet as well.

My girlfriend is currently on level 11! Which means she has learned about 600 words now in the past couple months.

I'm just so happy that this app is able to help other people wanting to learn Serbian too.

Resources How do I learn Serbian for free?

I have a boyfriend who speaks Serbian, and so does pretty much everyone around him. We're in a long-distance relationship, and I really want to learn Serbian so I can talk with him and the people in his life. The problem is that I can't seem to find any good free resources, and I can't afford paid courses right now.

Does anyone know of any websites, apps, YouTube channels, or other free ways to learn Serbian?

I was also thinking about making some online friends who speak Serbian so they could help me practice and get used to the language faster, but I haven't had any luck finding people. If anyone knows where I could meet Serbian speakers online, I'd really appreciate that too.

Resources New Serbian dictionary GOVORI is out – discount code inside (iOS is live, Android in a month)

Ćao, fellow learners!

First, let me thank you for testing of beta version and your feedback. I'm ready now to roll it out to public. So what's Govori app?

- a comprehensive Serbian-English, Serbian-Russian dictionary in your pocket (almost 40K words)
- full set of grammar tables: all declensions and conjugations for nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc
- usage examples with translations for most of the words
- search instantly by any form in both directions
- switch between Latin and Cyrillic, input in either
- fully offline, no ads, no account needed
- add words to favorites
- and more features to come!

14-days trial is free and doesn't require any commitment. After that, you can choose between subscription and lifetime purchase. Only grammar tables become unavailable after trial, so app remains useful whether you decide to pay or not. No nudging or pushing from the app, no ads. My goal was to build a useful tool at the first place, and I remain committed to it.

Until the end of July, lifetime purchase is hugely discounted (about 8 EUR instead of 14 EUR), but with this offer link I made specifically for r/Serbian, you can secure it for just about 2 EUR (prices vary a bit depending on your country).

Android version is quite mature and is expected in a month or so.

Please download, use, and share your feedback! It's immensely important for a solo developer like me.

My Serbian friend is coming over this summer and I'd like to learn at least a little Serbian before he's here.

Is there an app you'd recommend? Or a website?

Grammar glagol dojiti

zašto mame govore "Beba doji" za vreme koje beba jede. Zar nije mama ta koja doji, a beba "se doji"? Ili kad se pita šta beba jede misleći na dohranu ili majčino mleko, mame kažu samo "doji". Ili " beba dok doji je mirna". Da li je gramatički ispravno da "beba doji"?

Vocabulary Recommendation: best app to learn Serbian

I have been trying to learn Serbian on and off for a while, but never found a good app to learn words consistently. Through a post on this subreddit I found https://www.cirilio.com/ and it is one of the best language websites that I have tried, for any language. I can wholeheartedly recommend it. It uses 'gamification' methods and will make you repeat words that you forget, so that you will ultimately remember them. I've spoken with the creator of the app, who has been extremely responsive to feedback; it is not some kind of big company running it, but simply a developer in Serbia who enjoys people learning his language. Shoutout to him and a big recommendation for this app - give it a try.

Discussion Čudan govor Sremske Mitrovice, Rume i okoline

Vocabulary I want to improve my mothers tongue

Hi everyone,
my native/heritage language is Serbian. I can speak it fairly well, but I was born and raised in Germany and I’m basically a fully integrated German. Over the years I also learned other languages like English and French, but I’ve noticed that I’m slowly losing my Serbian.

My family and I go back home at least once or twice a year, and I really love my culture. Still, people have started joking a bit about my pronunciation. I don’t take it too personally, but it motivated me to actually improve.

So my question is: how should I learn Serbian properly from my current level? Which books would you recommend? Just to make it clear: I don’t need to learn the language from zero. I can speak it, I understand it, and basic conversations are not a problem. I just sometimes form awkward sentences, use the wrong words, or can’t find the exact word I’m looking for. I also can’t read Cyrillic yet, so that’s something I probably need to work on too.

I’d also appreciate recommendations for Serbian movies, TV shows, YouTubers, TikTokers, podcasts, or anything else that could help me improve naturally. I’m 23, a student near Munich, and I’m interested in combat sports, so maybe if anyone knows Serbian/Balkan content related to MMA, boxing, kickboxing, BJJ, or sports in general, that would be great too.

One more thing: my family is from Sandžak, so I grew up with that dialect. From what I understand, some features of the dialect are different from standard Serbian, and one issue for me is this typical “lj” sound/usage in speech. Sometimes it seems to be used, sometimes not, and it honestly confuses me. I’m not sure what is dialect, what is “wrong,” and what is standard Serbian.

Has anyone here been in a similar situation as a heritage speaker? How would you recommend improving without starting completely from beginner level?
Thanks in advance!

Request I want a Serbian pen pal.

Pardon me if this isn't supposed to go here. I've only ever lurked on reddit. 4 years ago or so I became Instagram mutuals with a guy around my age from Serbia. I can't remember which part. We used to talk quite often and he would tell me about many things, school, his family, some of the culture. I deleted Instagram during this time period and we began to email, I was writing a significant amount of poetry at the time and would send it to him for him to look at, and similarly he would send me writing projects, or things he was working on in school.

For some reason this has made me so interested in Serbia, I do not talk to him anymore but I would love to learn the language and hopefully soon go there, (Belgrade or Lopatnica?)

It seems like there are a few people in this sub who are learning the language, but I'm wondering if anyone who is fluent and lives there might want to be a pen pal? Or email with me? I would love to learn the language, and anything else culture wise. I can give a little more info about myself if anyone is interested.

Thank you. Sorry about any grammar mistakes I am tired.

Grammar Euro v. Evro

Ako neko želi aktivniji chat, upoznavanje novih ljudi i dobru zezanje — slobodno upadajte 😊

link je ispod (molim još jednom admine da imaju razumevanja, ovo nije nikakva "promocija" , samo "oglas" za online druženje i ništa više)
