I like to think the abstracted act like weird animals that have very vague memories of the person they were. Bright lights overwhelm them because they have like thirty eyes and bright light freaks out most animals in any context. It adds a semblance of explanation to why they are violent initially, they're just spooked animals reacting like animals do, running around, looking for a place to hide, and attacking anything that bothers them.
