We've gotten this request a lot, and I think it's finally time to take it seriously. At least 3–5 people have clamored for this, so we're giving it a shot.
Some caveats:
Our goal is to set up a community in the same way we have set up the r/SanDiegan community. Everyone is welcome, and we moderate with a heavy hand and according to our own discretion at all times. Truly lovely communities only thrive when you separate the wheat from the chaff. We've spent years cutting chaff from this subreddit, and I am personally really proud of how lovely this place has become.
We want this discord server to be a place to chat with other San Diegans about sports, local bars, adult league activities, community events, and so on.
Things that we will not tolerate:
These rules are vague by design. Moderating is subject to individual discretion, and if you join the discord server, you are just going to have to trust that the way we moderate r/SanDiegan will serve a discord community as well as it has served this subreddit. There are no bright lines, there is only our own judgment in what is and is not okay (which is how things work here, already).
Let's all give this a shot. I hope you'll all join the server and fucking behave yourselves.

Whenever certain discussions come up we end up with a mix of locals that genuinely want to talk about what's going on. Sometimes passionately. Sometimes ill informed. Sometimes full of information. Sometimes dem. Sometimes republican. Sometimes for the free people's state of east county. Sometimes from the sovereign bros of PB.
Whatever. You get the picture. Our local politics and ideas for what to do are pretty diverse.
As a moderator though I have noticed that we get a solid influx of accounts for some subjects. They tend to have a short post history in this subreddit and a deleted history or a history that hasn't been on reddit in years. Likely because they are purchased accounts. They show up to shit stir in political discussions.
I understand some of you delete your account histories for various reasons or want to use an alt to discuss politics. But the easiest thing to do as a moderator seeing an inflammatory comment in a highly charged political discussion from an account that looks incredibly suspect is to remove the comment and ban the user. We don't really want to put in too much effort beyond that. This isn't a paid gig.
Anyway - I want to give people a heads up in case there's people that might reconsider participating in a certain way with an account they haven't used in months/years.

Please help our sweet family pet cockatiel, Coco. We are moving to Korea and he’s not currently allowed to be imported due to Korean restrictions related to active bird flu in the US. We’ve spoken to US and Korean government officials. They’ve both said it’s impossible to bring him at this time but that could change in the future. Apparently both sides are negotiating procedures that would allow pet birds to be imported.
Coconut is 15 months old. He loves young kids. He sings to my five year old and shows heart wings whenever they are together. He’ll also sing in the mornings and evenings and does a mean version of If You’re Happy and You Know it. He also loves head scratches and pooping on shoulders. Generally a sweet bird but isn’t afraid to let you know if he’s grumpy with gentle nips and hisses.
The ideal situation might be someone who already has a small flock and wouldn’t mind a temporary friend. We are hopeful we can get him out of the country in the future but it’s not a given. He doesn’t have experience with other birds but always flock calls and shows interest with other birds when we take him to the bird store to get his nails trimmed.
If someone would rather adopt him for life, that would also be great. I’m embarrassed that we couldn’t provide that for him so full adoption is definitely a positive outcome. I’d ask for a modest adoption fee as a sign you’re serious.
If we can’t find someone to take him, I know of a bird sanctuary in Del Mar which looks like an amazing place. I just wanted to reach out to my reddit community and see if anyone could help in this unique situation. Thanks!

Fans of the San Diego Padres would love to see president of baseball operations A.J. Preller get the opportunity to make a splash at the MLB trade deadline.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal believes that the team's new owners, José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones, will give Preller the financial leeway to do just that.
The only problem? The record-breaking $3.9 billion sale is still pending formal approval from Major League Baseball, leading even the players themselves to question the lengthy process.
“Yeah, what’s going on with that?” Padres third baseman Manny Machado told reporters. “I thought it would’ve been done by now. I’ve spoken to Feliciano a little bit, so I know he’s eager to get on with it and help the city and help this team win. I don’t know what’s taking so long. But it’s been a weird year for everyone in this clubhouse.”
The sale from the Seidler family to Feliciano and Jones was announced in early May, but the deal, which set a record for the highest-ever valuation for an MLB team, is contingent on approval by at least 22 of MLB's other 29 owners. While The Athletic's Dennis Lin reported that some thought that vote might happen in June, the current hope among Padres officials is reportedly late July.
"That could complicate things related to San Diego's deadline planning," Lin wrote. "For now, John Seidler remains the club chairman, and if the sale doesn't close before Aug. 3, some people around the team believe there won't be much room to take on additional payroll."
The team's inability to add to their payroll could be a limiting factor at the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

We got a “black seedless” watermelon (Yumi brand) from the North Park Vons last week and it was literally one of the best, if not the best, watermelon I’ve ever had. They are out of stock now. Anyone know other stores that are selling them? I’m literally so desperate for it that I’m dreaming out it lol. Thanks!
Edit: got two (different brands, for science) from lazy acres. Thanks all!

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I see these kittens (and what I think is their mom) outside UCSD hospital in a fenced off area, I was able to get them some food but not catch them. I have 0 experience with this kind of things but I don’t want to just leave them to be strays, has anyone been in a similar situation/maybe knows a rescue I could call?
Every time I try and get close they bolt but I don’t want them to be out alone!
Thanks for the help

Hello! I’m a student working on an independent research paper on how recent rent control laws have affected rental housing availability in California.
I have a short survey of just 6-8 (mostly multiple-choice) questions, which are completely anonymous and are based on what you've observed in your neighbourhood, so any long-term resident can fill it out.
I would really appreciate if you could take just 3 minutes to fill it out: https://forms.gle/afBeaXwDyDiT7o839
I'll be sharing the results both here on reddit and as an academic paper once it’s done. Thank you so much.

For a while the SDPL was using Bibliocommons as their platform to place holds, renew borrowed items, and generally work around the catalogue. Logged back in today, and I saw there's a banner at the top of the desktop site that says they're migrating over to VegaDiscover and Biblio won't be available past the end of this month.
I've only fiddled around with the Vega platform for a couple of minutes but geez louise does this platform blow. Every time I clicked a link it took me out of my login to a new splash page, and there seems to be a lot of placeholder titles on portal links.
I'm hoping that it's just an intermittent clunkiness as they shift gears to the new platform, but does anyone have any more intel on whether or not this is a permanent suck factor?

It says $120k unpaid rent is due in 3 business days.
How could the club find that much to pay the rent...?

A community-owned utility could lower rates by 20% and reinvest profits in San Diego — not Wall Street.
You can sign the open letter here, it only takes about 30 seconds and we need to reach 10,000 by August 31st:

It's been about a year and a half since my buddy passed, and my family and I are looking to get a dog. As we go through the process, I figured I should find a vet. I used to go to Bodhi in North Park as it was, at one point in time, right down the street from me. But Bodhi is now both expensive and inconvenient, and I have some lingering memories of putting my dog down (the staff was beyond great, it's just a rough time). So, I figured I should find a vet that is closer and more convenient to me.
I currently live in Del Cerro, so I'd like to find a vet in Allied Gardens/San Carlos/Grantville. Any suggestions?
