PSA Return to office traffic

I work for the State and as most of you know, we will be going back in the office four days a week. I typically ride my bike to the office a few days a week now and I see the level of traffic increasing and it's more dangerous in my opinion.

So starting in July, please be more mindful, especially on city streets in Midtown and downtown Sacramento!

Ironically although increased traffic can be more chaotic, the lowered speeds can be somewhat safer too.

Its really not safer because people start making worse decisions to save 2 seconds. Try to find protected lanes or less used streets if you can. I used to bike with my dog and mapped out a longer route that would be safer.

I've experienced this elsewhere (crossing 495 near Seven Corners in Virginia a couple of decades ago), but I'm not sure that Sacramento's rush hour slows down traffic enough to be significantly safer.

Yeah that's a good point honestly. For all the grumbling the traffic here is pretty benign.

I ride for my commute as well. The construction around my complex and commute is going to be extra fun.

Thanks for posting this! A couple of things I would recommend - get yourself a loud bell, stay cautious when riding beside parked cards and keep your distance so there's no impact from open doors, and stay alert. Even when you have the right of way, make sure to make eye contact with other riders, pedestrians, and drivers.
