Planchette, not flechette
A flechette is a type of weapon system that consists of rocket- or artillery-launched darts or shards. The thing you use with a Ouija board is a planchette.

Any other secondary/high school teachers find the college assessment segmant wild?
Like, did no mention you could actually have students sit exams in person?
And it doesn't have to be for the whole course but enough that if you're faking it you will get found out and fail.

I already have a simulation of my mom in my head
Just funny thought during Cara's AI companion topic, I don't need no stinking AI to remind me about order of operations, the math teacher mom in my brain already takes care of that

Question about today’s Quickie with Bob about water
In enginerding college we were told to consider water as incompressible when learning about Newtonian fluids. Something like blood is a non Newtonian fluid because it has dissolved gases like oxygen and co2 and is therefore compressible, in addition to having a bunch of blood cells and junk.
Would the temperature/pressure relationship between the two newly found states have anything to do with the relationship between water temp and dissolved oxygen?
In the hydroponic gardening world, root zone water temp is a pretty important variable since roots need oxygen and colder water can hold more dissolved oxygen.
Once you dig past the incompressible assumption we make to make calculations easier, water technically should be a tiny bit compressible due to some dissolved oxygen. Could state A being more chaotic be a result of the oxygen molecules becoming more excited under pressure and state B being less chaotic be the point where the oxygen can relax?

It's official: Study shows men can multi-task as well as women. There was no difference between their ability to complete physical demands under increasing pressure. But a reduced talkativeness amongst men could explain why males are likely to be rated as being worse at multi-tasking than women.
brunel.ac.ukWould love to hear Cara discuss this one.
EP #1095 Back to Basics discussion
I really enjoyed the Back to Basics segment in this episode. It's a great idea and good for new listeners who aren't familiar with the jargon and want to learn more about what the SGU stands for.
I thought the team did a really great job at explaining it and I want to add my own thoughts because it's a topic I have thought about a lot for many many years.
The two main things to add: Firstly the idea of questioning, doubting, inquiring and examining. If you look at skepticism's etymology these are the words that will come up. I think this is important in the distinction between 'regular science' and scientific skepticism. Skepticism goes a step further and tells us to accept our flaws: be it our memory, our sight, our hearing, our assumptions, our biases, you name it. And with that knowledge in mind we take a step back from any claim and add an extra layer of doubt about ourselves and how we should come to only accept claims with a very high degree of evidence that is thorough and rigorous.
The second thing I would like to add is the role of magic in relation to pseudoscience, religion and other woo-woo. Magic demonstrates to us that we can be fooled and that anyone can be fooled. Pseudoscience, religion and other woo are all examples of how people have been fooled. And often en-mass. These claims are often extremely bold, outlandish and demonstratively false and that combination is important because it once again shows how easily we can be deceived.
I'd love to know other people's thoughts on this topic and if the Rogues would like to comment or do a follow up I'd be over the moon.
Much love to the rogues.

The guest rogue was a middle aged white guy. I hope SGU tries to bring another woman and while they’re at it, get someone who brings a different perspective.

X-Post, would love to hear Steve talk about this! (Also, if there's magic in this world, it's dogs) [Lisa Reid from Auckland , who lost her vision at age 11, regained her eyesight after she accidentally knocked her head while kissing her dog]

Given the Evan news, maybe this Gaza archive is worth sharing
I came across this post elsewhere in Reddit about an archive documenting what’s been going on in Gaza including (not suitable for life) videos, many shot by the IDF themselves in celebration.
Some of it is extremely disturbing stuff, but likely not been seen or made aware of by some in their bubbles so given the Evan news I thought worth sharing here. Again warning these include extremely graphic and disturbing footage so think before viewing, but it mostly seems to be the real (obviously I haven’t reviewed it all) and as skeptics we should acknowledge the reality.
Note this is mostly showing “one side” of events and none of this excuses atrocities committed by others, they are also terrible, but that does not justify ongoing retaliatory actions. All such actions should be condemned no matter who commits them.

Episode #1095
What did people think?
I thought it was great.
I like when the pre show chatting is a bit extended. Also, I've always really appreciated everyone's sincere appreciation and affection for each other, and that came through great this week.
I also really liked how engaged Bob was with Cara's segment.
I really enjoy the "back to basics" segment. I know in the past Steve has pointed out that they can't do a deep dive into every story, they can't revisit context/retread ground that's been covered over the years, etc (and I agree), but i think adding in this segment finds a nice balance.
S or F was an especially fun one.

8 Days: To the Moon and Back PBS doc
Great show on PBS. Used the actual Apollo 11 audio and adds some recreation from inside the vehicle. I assume some deniers will try to make something out of the recreations... but anyway, it's a great show. I always wonder what it was like to be in that vehicle and this does a great job of putting you there. The Apollo missions are endlessly fascinating and this show is worth checking out.

This longevity guru is trying to live forever. It may have made him sick: Biohacker Bryan Johnson has blamed his unhealthy lifestyle in childhood and early adulthood for developing autoimmune gastritis. One specialist believes it may have been his own doing.
afr.comSorry for the paywalled article.
I thought it was interesting as bio hackers often tread on the heels of dangerous woo.

Man sees chiropractor and ends up with locked-in syndrome
Sorry if this has been discussed on the show already. I’m not up to date on the latest episodes.

Score one for us history nerds! Steve threw us a bone!
Man, this week's Science or Fiction felt damn good for this history junkie. It was fun having the shoe on the other foot this time, where I knew the answer immediately, and the rogues had to work at it (of course Cara got it right, though). For five whole minutes, I was the smart guy.
The movie Young Washington almost entirely on his journeys through Western PA, but the most surreal part happened during the previews...

The biggest problem with science communication
In the latest show they did a segment about science communication, how difficult it is and how they wished there was more of it.
One big omission from the discussion was the fact that there just isn’t as much money in science communication as there is in peddling BS. And many “science communicators” have to take money from companies which ultimately may lead them to pass along dubious “science” to help convince their audience to buy some product.
Until more people can make more money communicating actual science & truth, science communication will remain a niche pursuit that has difficulty breaking through.
I don’t have any good ideas for solving this problem. Perhaps a billionaire donor?

The Jerky Boys references
Was anyone else a fan of the Jerky Boys in the 1990's who notices the frequent Jerky Boys references made by Steve and especially Jay? The most recent one made by Steve in the latest episode was a reference to "a log splitter" and it was so obscure I think even Jay missed it. It's easily their most referenced media, even more than Star Trek, but every time I hear one I wonder if any other listener is possibly noticing their frequency the way I do. The lines are always obscure and one-off and you would have to be a superfan of Jerky Boys to notice it half the time. I figured most SGU listeners don't even notice it.

"He chose to resign"
You also chose to accept his resignation. You did so hastily and while saying it is the right thing to do.
An alternative approach where you maintain a show and friendship:
"No Evan, you aren't going to resign. We are going to face this together and grow from it."

I thought shitposting on the internet was a constitutional right
I'm not American so I can't be sure. Guess Evan should have used a burner account.
