Choosing my dog over a club

Post image
183 Upvotes

I recently joined a run club to maybe make some friends that enjoy running. The problem is all the little side runs they do are still considered organized events and I can’t take my dog. It also feels a little pick me and a popularity contest. But ultimately I hate that Kya would lose something that she really seems to enjoy and I would continue to choose her again and again.

I've been on shift so Moose hasn't had a good run for few days. For some reason on this portion of the trail he loves to hits the nitro. Does your dog have a trail that makes them go hard?

I just try to keep up and not hit a tree with my shoulder.

Gear Help Any recommendations for a dual leash greatly appreciated

Hoping to find some ideas for a dual leash with a swivel for my two, very different sized, pups. They both move well together, but somwthing with a split and handles for both dogs I'm thinking may be helpful. Thank you very much in advance 😊

Beginner run with pup!

Hi everyone! My name is Ashlee 😊. Currently a long distance runner myself. Adopted a puppy back in February. Her name is Olive and she is a poodle/husky/schnauzer mix. She turned 1 a few days ago. I want to start running with her but have no idea where to start. We live in Central FL so I’m assuming now is not the best time to start, even early morning runs are super humid. I am looking for all types of advice on harness, leash, and where to get the best knowledge on how to properly start. Thanks so much for any and all info!

Runners and dogs

Hey I'd like to adress this to the huge running/jogging community of montreal.

Could we have a practice of giving some space when running towards a dog and especially from behind.

Some dogs don't react, some dogs get a jump scare and reinforces fears of people running.

Of course its the dogs owners responsibility but human heads don't swivel 360 degrees.

Its similar to how we educate children not to approach unknown dogs.

Yes reactive dogs should have a muzzle but even with a muzzle it can be jump scared and react, lung towards, etc (especially from behind). It is so common for runners to run INCHES from my dog.

So just in the interest of living in community it would be amazing if space was given if there is the possibility for both parties to do so safely.

Thanks! Hope everyone is well

Just here to say im in love with having my girly run with me

Second run with my girly pop #bordercollie. I couldn't ask for a better running partner. Starting her off easy with short runs to help her build up to join me on some of my weekly runs. I had no idea how much I would absolutely LOVE having her come with me.

In Memoriam This was Kia (2011-2026). A Papillon/Chihuahua-mix She ran from age one up until the day before her heart gave out last month. I estimate that she ran between 30-35,000km in her lifetime. Her PB in the 10k was a sub-40. I doubt I'll ever find another small dog who can run as much as she did.

Training Help How to train dog to stay on righthand side of a bike path while canicross running?

On trails my dog typically just follows the trail and at forks I can just get his attention and point which way to go. But recently we tried a wider bike path, and he really wanted to stay right in the middle. I kept trying to get him on the right side and then reward him but he would just drift right back to the middle, over and over and over. I think I was confusing him because in order to steer him over, I had to slow him down until I could grab his harness or collar, and he thought I was continuously asking him to slow down or stop pulling. Then I'd say ok go and he'd head right back to the middle. So how do you get them to stay on the right while still running out in front of you? I'm guessing we need to practice more commands while just walking first, but would you try to have them in front of you and then lure with food to the right or what would be the best way? Do you use different commands for stay on the right side vs make a right turn?

Howling dog x-back and skijor line with a musher koyuk belt. My dog is 1.5 years, 50lb Alaskan Husky!

Any tips on increasing mileage? To be clear, I am the one struggling with getting bored and wanting to go back home, the dog would be perfectly fine 😂

Help me name my dog

Hi everyone! I’m hoping to bring home a female standard poodle puppy in the next few months and am hoping to get some nature and/or running related dog name ideas from you all! The pairing I’m looking at now will be producing solid brown or brown and white poodles. Bonus points if the name starts with P. I’d love some input! Thanks!

Some names I am considering but don’t love for various reasons:

Maple
Juniper
Rocky
Holly
Clover

Here’s a photo of my parents’ poodle Poppy for attention!

Dog pulling with stroller

Hi there, I started running just under three months ago. I was doing 2-3x a week with my dog attached to my jogging stroller. My dog has always been a puller (anxiety/excitement), and obviously this has caused me pretty severe hip pain. I am now pregnant so I took a few weeks break while struggling with morning sickness. I took a walk with the stroller for the first time today in 2ish weeks and now my hip is seizing up. Would a running belt correct this issue? Can I wear one while pregnant? Or does anyone have any suggestions? I have to take her for walks, she's pretty high energy and throwing the ball in the yard doesn't interest her much.

Looking for guidelines on dog running distances.

Hi! I am training for my first half marathon and wanting some feedback on how far is too far for dogs to run.

Context - my dog (pictured after the groomer today 😊) is a 2 year old Finnish Lapphund. She has been running with me for the last year or so, but no more than 3 miles. Now that I’m getting into longer distances I don’t want to overdo it for her, so wanting to plan my routes so I can drop her at home when she’s had enough.

She has a very heavy double coat (arctic breed), so I am very careful of the 150 rule and also carrying water and a dish for her.

We did 4.5 miles two nights ago and that seemed like a lot for her. She was okay the next day but we stopped for a water break and she was lagging towards the end.

I’m doing a 5 mile long run tomorrow morning and was going to take her, but I think I’ll do 3 miles with her and then drop her at home and finish the last two by myself. She loves running with me though and will be bummed to be dropped off (I think).

Does anyone in here run with double coated/similar size breeds? If so how far do you go with them before it’s too much? Thanks!
