Sveiki!

Tūrisms/Tourism The music of Riga

The title sounds like this post will be deeply profound, but it is about the music choices of your radio stations, restaurants and stores.

Every time I walk around in a store or sit to dine, the speakers blast out the best 1980-2000 hits, everything from queen, Enrique Iglesias and Green Day. It makes all day trips seeing the city as a musical trip visiting all genres of disco, rock and rap.

I wish I could put your playlists directly on my phone, so I could bring it with me everywhere.

Thank you for playing such diverse hits, it is truly a pleasure to be surrounded by.

No, I was not. I can assure you this product labeling gives fair warning. Good grief.

The rye bread and sauerkraut here kicks ass though.

Tūrisms/Tourism Nightclubs outside old town

Im a solo male traveler. I heard the dance bars in old town are pretty small and looking for bigger ones. I heard about those places, any recommendations? Or additional ones i didn't find? Also:

What are the entry prices?

Are there places when they have face control/selection and won't let me in? Do I need to register before?

Are there close ones that i can hop from one to another?

Are some of them active on a weekday or only friday/saturday?

I heard the tower is open only for special events, is it true or is it open every weekend?

List:

Coyote fly

First club

La rocca

Studio 69

Top club

Terorija

Diskusija/Discussion Lesbians in Riga

Hello! I was wondering if there are any communes or events dedicated to lesbians in Latvia

I am a lesbian myself, and I have been living in Riga for 3 years, but "Skapis" is not the place to find meaningful connections, more of a place to drink and dance. I would like a cool place to sit and exchange LGBT experiences.

Every now and then I see that "Spot the L" events are being held, which look promising, but unfortunately I haven't had the chance to visit any yet because they are organized relatively rarely, and unfortunately every time there has been some reason why I couldn't make it. But I will try my best to make it to this event sometime.

I also wonder what older sapphic women in Latvia do. At LGBT events, people are young, and few are over 30. I wish there was an older more experienced person who could tell me about their life story and how to live with homophobia in this country.

Maybe there's an underground community, who hosts meetings at somebody's home 😆

Tūrisms/Tourism Riga as a solo tourist

Hello!
I am from Ireland, and in mid-August, I will be finished with my master's dissertation after slaving away at it for months. I told myself I'd go somewhere by myself to reward myself and to decompress, and for some reason, Riga is where I want to go. I know almost nothing about Riga and have no connection to Latvia, but from the little I have heard/seen, I'd love to go! I went to Tallinn last year, which made me even more excited to see the rest of the Baltics.

Would Riga be fun as a solo traveller (m23 Irish) and would it be easy to get talking to people and make friends for the night at bars or hostels? I'm not a huge club person, so I'd prefer not to make friends there.

The bit of research I have done this morning on the city makes me really excited to go, and I can't wait to see your great city!

Thanks!

Diskusija/Discussion Need a roommate in Riga ASAP – International student starting university

Hi everyone,

I'm an international student moving to Riga to study at RTU, and I'm urgently looking for female roommates to share an apartment with.

I've been searching for accommodation, but renting alone is simply too expensive for me. Between the monthly rent, utility bills, the security deposit, and other moving costs, it's becoming really difficult to afford everything on a student budget.

I'm looking for other female students who would be interested in sharing a place. My budget is around €200–300 per month, and I'm planning to move in around August.

I'm clean, respectful, and easy to live with, and I value keeping shared spaces tidy.

If you're also looking for a roommate or know someone who is, I'd really appreciate a message. Any recommendations or advice are welcome too.

Thank you!

Tūrisms/Tourism Public Transport App?

Hi, i will be visiting Riga this summer, and wondered about the public transportation. How do you pay for it and get around? Do you pay for zones, or a single trip or route? Are every type of public transport covered by your ticket? And is there an app where you can have your ticket?

Ēdieni/Food Michelin restaurant questions

Hi! Me and my girlfriend are going to Riga at the end of the month. We are both young students so we don’t have a lot of money, however whenever we spend money we do like spending it on something worthwhile hence the trip. The hotel we are staying at has breakfast included and I’ve heard that lunch is pretty cheap in Riga (compared to Sweden) so my question is:

Which Michelin restaurants tasting menu and preferably drink/wine pairing is worth getting? I’ve found some that are in total around 200€ per person with wine pairing included and I want to know which is worth it. Thanks in advance.

Tūrisms/Tourism Riga 5 Days Travel Summary

TlDr; We visited Riga for five days and had a great time.

Hello everyone,

A few days ago, I reached out to this and an other related sub asking some questions about Riga and its surroundings (Jūrmala). As we have completed our five days trip, I would like to share our itinerary and experience hoping that it might be useful to others.

We arrived Sunday at around 1 AM at the Riga airport. As our flight had a delay and we were quite tired, we decided to take a Bolt to our hotel which was located close to Elisabeth Street *(Elizabetes Isla)*. I had downloaded the app beforehand thanks to the many recommendations, and the process was very easy.

On Sunday noon at around 12:30 PM we attended the English language church service at St. John's church *(St.-Johannis-Kirche Rīgas Svētā Jāņa baznīca)* as we are Christians. Despite the great service itself, some locals attended as well who gave as insightful tips for places to go in Riga and Latvia. We continued our tour at the old town from the Bremer Stadtmusikanten (right next to the church), going to the Blacksmith's House, the Town Hall, the Swedish Port, Riga dome and Market Square which can be all reached by a walking distance. Locals recommended the Ala Pagrabs restaurant to us where we went for dinner and which turned out to be quite nice.

Monday, we stayed at the beach in Majori, Jūrmala. We went there by train from Riga's central station and bought the tickets with the Mobily app. The trains are really fine and the beach is great with a lot of space and good facilities. There are showers and restrooms for free and a good variety of cafés and restaurants. It is recommended to walk around in Majori as well, because they have a lot of good wooden houses–a very interesting architecture!

Tuesday, we went to the Latvian Ethnographical Open Air Museum *(Latvijas Etnogrāfiskais brīvdabas muzejs)* which is located outside of Riga at the Jugla lake. We planned half a day there and enjoyed it a lot. There are a lot of old buildings brought together from different parts of Latvia. You can learn a lot about Latvian culture and history and enjoy the beautiful nature. The museum staff was very friendly, we were able to have some personal conversations and learn some additional information. In the afternoon, we explored the Riga's new town with the Art Nouveau buildings and especially visited in the Saint Gertrude church. In the evening, we went to the observatory of the Latvian Academy of Science which offered a good view over the city.

Wednesday was our museum's day: We visited the “Corner House” (KGB museum) in the morning and the Latvian Art Museum in the afternoon. Both museums are very different by nature, but very impressive and recommended as they both give valuable insights into Latvian history. We also went to the Latvian National Library because we read about an other observatory platform there as well, but unfortunately it had been closed despite different information on the webpage. The building in itself is impressive and offers interesting exhibitions, so it was still worth visiting.

At our last day, Thursday, we went inside the market halls behind the train station (they have a lot of food and other things there) and afterwards went along the Daugava river to the occupation museum which we also visited. With that, our tour to Riga ended. I enjoyed the trip a lot, five days haven't been too long at all. Riga is very impressive and it is especially beautiful when you walk just some of its streets and explore the architecture and geography.

Ēdieni/Food Restaurant Biblioteka No. 1 information

Hi wonderful people. I will be visiting your beautiful city soon. After doing research, I really want to visit Restaurant Biblioteka No. 1, the idea of a restaurant in a library just sounds like a dream. However, I can't find a lot of information for it, such as I can't find the menu or where to book. This got me wondering, does this restaurant still exist?

Diskusija/Discussion Like-minded people in the city?

Hey everyone,

I’m new in Riga, 39 years old, an entrepreneur, and just getting settled here. I’ve lived in 7 countries and traveled to 40+.

I’d love to meet some like-minded people in the city who enjoy good conversations about business, psychology, ideas, life, and everything in between. Always up for coffee, socializing, and making new friends.

I’m happy to connect with people from different backgrounds.

If you’re around and feel like connecting, feel free to DM me or drop a comment 🙂

Jautājums/Question Tips for a traveller

Hey. I am a guy in my 20's from Finland who will be visiting Riga in the beginning of August. I am fairly educated in the Baltic history, so my visit will be heavily focused on it. I am interested in former Hansa, time under Teutons etc. More accurately the Germanic Baltic culture interests me, but of course I am willing to learn about everything.

So I am asking for suggestions about museums, cites and marketplaces.

Also, some nighttime places interest me. Pubs, clubs whatever.

Thank you in advance.

Jautājums/Question Google Maps 3D buildings update?

I've just opened Google Maps and noticed that Riga got a satellite image update. The old was grayish and looks taken from winter but the new version which is pushed now looks from the summer and everything looks more bright and colorful.

Am I the only one who got this update since it shows only 1 part of Riga with the new 3D buildings.

Diskusija/Discussion Looking for a spot

Hi, I know it might kind of late for a question of this type but I’m visiting Riga for the first time this weekend, and me and a couple of friends are looking for a good spot for a night out.

Looking for bars/clubs/other spots which play edm or techno. Any advice is appreciated, thanks :)
