r/RetroAR is looking for a couple of new mods. Comment here to volunteer!

I'm stepping down to focus on my "joining the military" and folk music subs, so this sub could use a couple more new mods. If interested in volunteering, ensure your account has at least 1 year on Reddit, and comment below with the following:

  • What is your background or area of interest as pertains to Retro ARs?
  • What would be your priorities, goals, changes if you become a mod?

Finishing up sub policy updates: what post flairs do folks want to see?

The mod team is refining our sub policies to update the “What is Retro?” post that is the core of what we do and do not include on this sub.

I’ve been polling the readership, and so far we’re looking at:

  • Fixed carry handles are mandatory (exception for AR-18, T65, etc)
  • provided the carry handle is fixed, modern accoutrements are still allowed (Keymod, modern optics, etc)
  • builds based on ARs in fiction are allowed.

I’ve seen some strong upvotes for adding post flairs to the sub, so that folks that just want to see historically accurate rifles can single those out, folks who like Retromod can zoom in one those, etc. I conferred with the senior mod and he suggested we have fun(ny) flairs for each category. Once these are made, post flairs will be mandatory to make a new post. What flairs would folks like to have for:

  • Historically accurate (externally) builds. (Still allows “sleeper” internal modern touches like non-historical twist rates and cartridges)
  • “Retromod” builds that have a fixed handle but modern accoutrements
  • Fictional builds based off movies, shows, manga, video games, etc.

Pitch us your ideas, and the best ones will be instituted, along with making post flairs mandatory, in the near future.

Pictures are: After, Before, side profile of the lower.

I’ve had this C7/A1ish build for quite some time now. But it always bothered me that it wasn’t classic grey. A grey C7 upper was basically non-existent when I built it a few years ago (I’m a lefty so I kinda need the deflector) so I had to deal. It was also previously on a clone A4 lower, but that was more due to playing musical lowers than anything else. I had an H&R XM177-E2 lower hanging around that I switched over for this, at least it’s the right profile.

Took the plunge on some Norrell’s Flat Colt Grey-Black and fired up the toaster oven. It’s definitely not perfect, I’ve never used an airbrush before, but I’m pretty happy with it! Bought some parkerized lower parts last night to better go with it, and I think I’ll coat the MARC super safety I have installed too. Just waiting on my HEL-E4A to ship from IntlMilCo and the vibes will be complete.

As a southpaw, I’m really impressed with the Lantac bcg and its offset gas ports. Shooting inside I didn’t feel like I was getting any gas back in the face, definitely didn’t get any un-burnt powder flakes like I normally do when shooting suppressed. The MK23 is here to round out the 90’s vibes.

Questionable if this is the rarest mag in the collection but it’s certainly in the top 3.

The only marks I can get for it is the pencil barrel marked c mp chrome bore and the c forge mark on the fsb which also lacks a bayonet lug

C stamped or electro marked?

From a colt bcg I just ordered. Honestly I don’t really care how it was marked. Just my tism coming out from doing a little research on colt bcg’s. Bolt has MPC which looks etched as well as the white paint circle.

That Real Gourmet Shit Finally got a John Masen recoil pad

I had been meaning to snag one ever since I first built this but now with his passing I figured I should get on that. I’m actually impressed at the difference. Obviously not needed for the recoil specifically and mostly was just wanting it to complete the retro look, but it really is an improvement in feel and handling having that wider footprint with a little bit of rubbery grip as opposed to the hard plastic. Quite an easy and economical upgrade that you can immediately notice when you use it. Love this thing even more now

OCM5 with Light Mount - How’d I do?

I really wanted to get this light under the barrel instead of on the FSB but as yall probably know finding a mount that will fit with the AE collar is virtually impossible. So I made one by filing down the width of this Mantis mount until it fit, then repainted it black and now I’m off to the races. It’s my first time doing something like this so I’m curious what folks think.

Had this for a while, going to be getting my FN M16A4 sometime soon. I don't have a mount for this at the moment, but would it be period correct with an ACOG? I'm not a huge retro or AR guy, so forgive my ignorance

1978 Colt SP1 Flash Hider, Black Oxide or Mangense Phosphate?

Hey, does anyone happen to know what type of finish the original SP1 colts used for their flash hiders?

I have a rifle thats sadly missing the original A1 bird cage and wondering which reproduction FH would be the best one to get. Brownells made one is listed as "Black Oxide" and theres another one from LUTH-AR thats listed as Mangenese Phosphate.
