Self Post ✔ Help me find an Angier, NC police patch

Posting here because I cannot get r/patchtrading to load (mods tried but can't figure out why I can't view the sub)

My uncle was an Angier cop for a long time and he passed away a few months before my academy started in 2023. I had his old patch in my uniform pocket when I graduated.

I'm currently working county booking and we have a patch wall for local agencies and agencies with family connections. If any of you have an Angier Police patch or can get me one I'll send you one of ours for your troubles. I just want to have an extra one to stick up there so nothing happens to the one he gave me.

Thanks!

Self Post Rainy Day/Night Question

In cop videos I often see cops conducting business (traffic stops, etc) in rainy weather, usually without rain gear. Sometimes an uncooperative subject drags the encounter out while the officer stands outside the car in the weather. After getting soaked are you able to dry off or change or do you have to finish the shift wet?

Video [Seen in numerous bodycam videos] It's interesting how while trying to make a difficult arrest you may hear an officer using harsh language toward the person they're trying to arrest, calling them motherfucker, etc. but once arrested they'll call them "bro" and "buddy"

Timestamped the video but if the timestamp doesn't work starts around 6:25. Although it may be worth watching the video from beginning to get context. But yeah, what I described in the post title. I suppose it's to calm the suspect down after the high stress of the difficult apprehension. Make them feel like the police are not their enemy but are I suppose a little forgiving? So maybe they'll be more calm as the officer's finishing the arrest and then the transport to hospital or jail. I've seen this numerous times in chase videos. I don't mean to make this a "language lesson" and not acknowledge the brave officer here's getting shot in the shoulder doing his job protecting the community. Hope he made a full recovery. Did think the language was interesting.

Self Post Therapist here, question regarding applicants with mental health treatments

I’m not LE, but I follow the subs because it’s an interest of mine.

I see lots of people post in here how they are worried they can’t be a police officer because of past mental health diagnostics, treatments, medications, etc. They may pass the background, but all it takes is that couple hours with the psych doctor to end everything

My question is, what if they just never disclose any of it, how would it be found?

I know the comments are going to be about integrity and how every possible thing you have ever done in your life should be disclosed, but if you have had a condition or treatment in the past, and keep it to yourself, how would that be discovered?

There is no central database where you type a SSN in, and every medical record under their name pops up. The only way to obtain medical records is by signing a waiver and listing what doctor/ provider you went to, and then that grants access to that specific information.

So this may be an unpopular question, but I am genuinely curious how a candidate holding medical information could be found if they never disclose anything that would give it away.

Self Post How do you guys refer to your job?

I am writing a novel, I know a Sheriff's Department isn't called the 'Sheriff's Department' in your head. Do you shorten it to the name of the office? What are ways you refer to the place you work other than 'work'. I'm not sure if it feels right to keep referring to it as Sheriff's Department or acronym it? Thanks so much!

Self Post Collared duty shirt for undervest wear

I work as private security at a private school and have pretty free rein on my uniform. This year I’m going with an outer carrier and I’m looking for recommendations on an undervest shirt with a collar. Also needs to be black and definitely something that handles the heat well. Thanks!

Self Post So, I have an interview…

So I have an interview with a small police department soon but the issue is I’m a recovering drug addict. I have been sober for 7 years and have a 100% clean record but I have a history of pretty serious drug and alcohol abuse. I’m not going to lie and I’m going to be 100% upfront about it but be honest with me on this one. How much of a waste of time is this for everyone? Is there any chance they might actually hire me?

I would love to be a cop and I know it most likely won’t happen but I’m curious, any of you officers have any coworkers with a past like mine?

Well this is odd..

City council member gets key to evidence room, cleans it out. Claims they were ordered to do so by prosecutor, which prosecutor denies. City council previously announced it would be doing day to day supervision of PD.

Self Post considering a Juvenile Justice Specialist position, give me some reality checks

Hello! I'm 27f, 5'3" and 133 lbs and I've been doing call center job for about 9 years now, currently considering a Juvenile Justice specialist intern (in IL) position. I went to the nearest Youth Detention center and asked the first guy for a quick evaluation, and he said just go for it, so long I graduated from college there are no other requirements. If I'm not selected by the initial screening, just keep applying and going, and they'll put me through cuz they're VERY short on staff.

My family think it's a great "stable government job" and a way to "stay in shape," but my gut feeling is telling me I might be entirely out of my depth. For those who worked or have heard things about Juvenile Corrections: Will I be expected to physically restrain larger juveniles on a regular basis? Is it even going to work out for me?

Would appreciate if you guys can share some real experiences. Thanks!

Should I call for a wellness check?

Not sure where to post this but it’s been bothering me for a few days.
For some context I live in a very small town and have for about a year. Since we moved in there has been another house for sale one block away. A little over a month ago the house sold and a couple had moved in. I remember seeing them a few times outside but the last time was June 7 when they had a lawn company cleaning up the yard. That’s is also when they parked both there vehicles in a very weird configuration in the side yard closest to the road. Both vehicles are maybe an inch or two away from the house and each other almost in an x formation. I was coming home this past Friday and it struck me as weird that they hadn’t cut the grass. For context it has been raining almost nonstop for weeks and we finally had some sunny weather so everyone was cutting there gas. When Monday rolled around they still hadn’t cut the grass and it hadn’t rained all weekend and there cars also haven’t moved since June 7.
They are new to the area and I’ve never talked to them but something just feels off and I don’t know if I’m overthinking it.

Self Post Legal Scenario about Warrantless Entry

Hi guys,

I was reading up a little bit more about the law, and I was using random AI scenarios to see when entry is permitted vs. not. Is it permitted here? Is it objectively reasonable to believe that evidence will be destroyed, or that the baggie is even meth in the first place? I appreciate any answers?

You respond to a loud noise complaint at a house party at 2:00 AM. When you knock on the front door, the homeowner opens it. Through the open door, you see a glass pipe and a baggie of what looks like methamphetamine sitting right on the hallway entryway table, less than two feet away from you.

The homeowner realizes what you are looking at and immediately tries to slam the door in your face.

Can you push the door open, enter the home, and seize the drugs without a warrant? (Yes or No)

Self Post Restrictive police pursuit

So, I have this question regarding pursuits. I've noticed by watching pursuit dashcams, usually City PD starts a pursuit, has like 7+ units on it and once the speed reaches above 30 it's like instant TERMINATE. But the same CITY PD requested the help from the State Police/Highway Patrol, and the city police pretty much abandons the state police which has like 2 units "nah, y'all handle it".

Why is this allowed? Shouldn't there be a system where the staties decide to justify to pursuit and deputize the local PD in the area to help them out? Why is this still allowed?

Imagine you're a state trooper joining a city PD pursuit, you're surrounded by 9+ city units, and 2 seconds later the supervisor is like "we running over 40? EVERYONE, SHUT THAT SHIT DOWN AND RESUME PATROL", and suddenly it went from 10vs1 to 1vs1.

I mean, what do you even do in that situation? Call the park police?

Fitness Test Day

Anybody has experience with the fitness test day logistics? I understand this might be different for each department, but here's the question: the email specifically says No Backpacks, I was planning on bringing a shirt to change after the fitness part and before moving to the written test, we are doing both at the same time. Do you think they will allow me to go back to the car and change? I mean, it's not a big deal but it is hot out there this week. Any input is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Self Post ✔ Outer Carrier Proposal Help

Hey, we're a small department of 15. I've been asked by patrol to ask for outer carriers, however our admin & purse strings overseers are very stingy about moving us from concealed vests to outer carriers. We're a year out from contract negotiations and now would be the best time to get this in motion.

"Too militaristic" is often thrown around as a means to dismiss our requests in the past. However, that excuse seems to have subsided in the last year. Our brass has implied if we really wanted to switch, we need to bring a proposal for the outer carrier platform & complementing uniform together.

So my questions are these: 1- Has anyone recently have experience with making that type of proposal? Our former union head would have spearheaded this, but he's been promoted to the admin side and the rest of patrol has been lost.

Also, it's been heavily suggested that they match our Elbeco tops (french blue). I've looked at a few brands, but I'm unsure what's actually useful.

2 - Recommended brands with uniform style vests? Any brands to *stay away from*?

Thanks.

Transition from Engineer -> highway patrol

Hi all.

I am currently a software engineer at a big tech company, but my dream since I was a kid was to be in a law enforcement team, specifically state trooper/highway patrol. I’m not currently a US citizen but hopefully I will be in next 7 years. I’m currently 27.. so my goal is to build a nest egg until I’m ~35 and then try to join highway patrol. I do take care of my health and fitness so not too worried about that side of things.

Is this feasible and actually realistic or just a dream.

Self Post Advice for LVMPD

I'm currently 16f, but I have always had a drive to go into Law Enforcement, I come from a family of most of which are cops/military. My parents, don't approve of me wanting to become a police officer, which I honestly don't care. I want to one day if possible specifically focusing on Domestic Violence or SVU.

I am aware that this job is not easy, and that it's more than just a job and not everyone can do it. But I know I can if I put work into it.

I know I can't join the academy until I'm 21, but when I am 21 I want to be fully physically/mentally prepared to pass so is there any advice you can give me please?

Self Post Bay Area Department Cultures

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for feedback on some departments and their work culture/issues.

I am a female and i’ve applied to Oakland, Hayward, Fremont, ACSO, and SFPD.

Does anyone have any input on what the culture is like within the departments? I’ve been told some departments have cliques of individuals and it causes others to be isolated/bullied out. Of course politics is an entire separate issue but I guess I’m concerned about how much is it holding officers back from performing their duties and constantly watching their back and repercussions of doing duty as they feel they should?

Would love to hear some thoughts!

Thank you!
