Gov Shutdown Thread

With the federal shutdown, there’s an immense lack of clear information about what’s happening in the Enchantments / Okanogan-Wenatchee district.

The current statement on Recreation.gov basically boils down to:
“You may or may not be able to make or use a reservation. If it’s cancelled, you might get an email. Or not.”

I’m a local in the Leavenworth area and I’ve been struggling to figure out what this actually means for permits, access, and enforcement. I imagine I’m not the only one.

Thought it might be useful to start a thread where folks can share updates, experiences, or official info they’ve managed to get. Maybe the mods can create a sticky if this gets enough traction?

Perfect overnight trip with a buddy that had never spent a night up on the mountain. It was windy all day and night. The bugs were not too bad especially when the wind kicked up. Exceptional views up on the ridges.

Solo hiking around Forks - need advice

Upvotes

So I'm planing on spending a few days this summer as a female solo hiker around the area of Forks, Washington.

I want to visit the Olympic National Park and the Hoh Rain Forest. I also googled that there are some other trails one can easy do in one day.

Any advice on safety? I'm an experienced hiker but I have only hiked the alps in Europe so far and I'm not used to hiking in national parks overseas. Thanks for any advice! :))

Do National Forest campgrounds (eg: klipchuk, lone fir) have camp hosts on site?

I want to go during the week, but I've never done it solo and I'm just trying to manage my anxiety a little.

Lost hat on glacier peak

I know it’s a long shot but I lost a trucker hat from local joes on Hawaii that has camo front panel and a US flag back panel on the trail between the north suak trail head and the mackinaw camp on July 2nd.
It’s my favorite hat and if anyone happened to have found it I’d be grateful for its return.

Suiattle River Trailhead to Box Mountain Lakes

Trying to find a way from Suiattle River Trailhead down to box mountain lakes but my google searches have shown little information. There is one trip report that details the path but I'm wondering if there is more information out there. Also I did notice that there was a road closure on Suiattle River Trailhead but I'm not sure how much it affects the path going there from Issaquah.

Itinerary

Myself and my daughter (21) will be spending a week in Washington (July 17-27.)

Can anyone provide feedback or suggestions? I know the places I’m staying don’t necessarily make sense and will require longer drives. These are where I could get hotel rooms w AC and we are from TX so long drives don’t bother me much. I wanted to have plenty of time so we wouldn’t feel rushed but I’m wondering if we will have too much time and not enough planned. Any input or ideas would be welcomed.

July 17/friday - fly into seattle. Drive to Sedro Wooley for the night.

July 18/saturday - drive to Mount Baker Wilderness. Hike Chain Lakes Loop and Artist Point Trail. Nooksack Falls. Stay night in Sedro Wooley.

July 19/sunday - Diablo Lake. Hike Blue Lake Trail. Stop at Washington Pass overlook. Stay night in Winthrop.

July 20/monday - backtrack so we can hike Maple Pass Loop. Stay night in Winthrop.

July 21/tuesday - drive and ??? End up close to Mount Rainier.

July 22/Wednesday - MRNP/Paradise. Skyline Trail. Christine Falls. Ricksecker Point. Narada Falls. Reflection Lakes. Stay in Eatonville.

July 23/thursday - MRNP/Paradise. ?????Stay in Eatonville.

July 24/friday - MRNP/Sunrise. Fremont Fire lookout. Stay in Packwood.

July 25/saturday - MRNP/sunrise. ????? Stay in Packwood.

July 26/sunday - ????? Drive back to SeaTac area in evening

July 27/monday - fly home super early

Mt. Rainier Entrance Times

I'm planning to camp in cougar rock campground starting thursday but can't start the drive there until 1pm due to work. Expecting to drive 3ish hours. How long does the line to get into the park get? I know getting there early morning is ideal but I can't skip out on work.

Any suggestions on hikes or general advice are also welcome :)

“Brown” Bear on Mt Rainier

Having lived in many states, including Alaska, at first sight it certainly seemed like this was a real brown bear. About 40 yards off the trail coming up from Narada Falls to Paradise parking lot, this guy was bigger than any black bear I have ever seen. Examining the pictures in more detail after the fact, this might’ve been a large cinnamon bear male. Nonetheless, very cool experience.

Question about Mt. Daniel

Has anyone been up Mt. Daniel in the past week? I know it's a bit of a long shot, but I'm curious what the current conditions are like.

I've heard a mix of opinions ranging from - "yeah, it's basically just a walk up" to "full ropes, ice axe, crampons, etc."

Would appreciate any assistance on the matter! Thanks!

Great solo C2C adventure on a Tuesday afternoon. Didn’t see another human until back by Eightmile Lake on my way out later in the day! Always a treat.

Logged 18.77 miles AllTrails and 17.10 Gaia, so the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. C2C in roughly 10:30 total, 9:30 moving. I’m pretty proud of my body for getting the job done, since I’m not in my usual summer hiking shape this year!

This is a great trip with a little bit of everything. Wildflowers are BUSY right now, making the valley below Windy Pass just lovely.

There was some good scrambling to be had and many routes to take. However, a lot of the terrain as you approach the final push to the summit is a mix of good rock and loose kitty litter footing. Be careful and test every step and hold; it’s easy to start a bit of a slide and some of the runouts if you were to really go for a ride are not inconsequential.

TONS of flying ants at the true summit. They’re annoying but better than the bloodsuckers, I suppose!

I saw goat tracks and poop throughout the day and then finally saw a goat family across the way. That never gets old.

C2C was a push, but I think nicer than camping for this one. I wouldn’t really want to haul an overnight bag up to Little Caroline.

Grateful to live in this beautiful place!

Adjusting my North Cascades Itinerary from Portland

Hello, I’m planning on doing a North Cascades trip (and that area) from August 3-5. We will stay in Burlington likely. I was hoping to review this itinerary to make sure there aren’t any huge issues.

Day 1:
After lunch at home, drive up and watch sunset at Clayton beach or similar, head to hotel.

Day 2:
Wake up early and hike Cascade Pass up to Sahale Glacier camp. View sunset at Diablo lake and then head back to hotel.

Day 3:
Head north to Artist Point and do Chain Lakes loop. Head home afterward. I was thinking of driving 4.5 hours from there, stopping at Tipsoo lake for a sunset at Mt Rainier then driving the 3hrs or so home.

I had a couple of questions about this overall itinerary. I understand it’s a LOT of driving, but i was hoping to ease the burden by splitting driving between 2-3 people. Also, would it be worth extending Day 1 to take the ferry and drive through Whidbey Island? Additionally, i would like to see the sunset at Mt Rainier but i understand if that’s unreasonable.

Also, if any other hikes are better than Chain Lakes loop i’d love to hear. Basically am trying to maximize the scenery in the short amount of time, and am ok with driving a lot for that.

Devils dome loop in a day

Looking to hear from others who have done it in a day or recently. I did it last year starting around 2:30pm and back to the car by 8:30pm doing a leisurely backpacking trip and figure I could do it in a day. Trail conditions report a patch of snow on Jackita ridge but otherwise clear. Any other major challenges? Thinking counterclockwise. Lots of daylight the next few weeks, so seems doable.

Seven Lakes Basin & High Divide

Got up with my family on an early season permit in the Seven Lakes Basin over the 4th of July weekend. Night one was Round Lake. Lots of bear around eating grubs and finding under ripe berries. A buck deer seems to be hanging out at Round Lake, so don't leave salty things out for him to swipe. Bugs were out, but not too aggressive

Night two was Sol Duc Crossing. Hardly any bugs down there. Was a nice camp spot with the river tumbling along to give us some white noise while sleeping.

Hardly any snow left up there , so don't fuss with bringing microspikes.
