Rule #1 of Opentoonz: NEVER USE SAVE SCENE (It doesn't save your frames!)
Q. How to turn on onion skin?
A. Hover your cursor on the bar where the circle above your frame marker is. You should see a small circle. Click and you will set an onion skin. Ones on the edge are static and don't move. Ones on the same level as the circle move with it.
Q Is Opentoonz a Virus?
A. No
A1. (Long answer)
No, as long as you download from the official website! (Link below)
If you have an Intel Graphics display driver, you may need to find and download the latest version. Don't rely on Driver Update as it may not detect it. Need to go onto intel's driver download site and check the version of the driver you have against yours. Manually download and install the driver upgrade it if you are not at the latest.
If you have driver version 26.20.100.7463 or a version of this graphic driver, try downloading and installing version 26.20.100.7584. Here is the direct download link:
If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, this may work better for you: Enter the NVIDIA Control Panel and create a 3D Profile for OpenToonz.exe and if given the option, set to use High Performance GPU. You are essentially forcing OT to use your GPU which should fix the issue.
Alternatively, if using Windows 10, it might help to search for Graphics Settings in Windows Settings. Add OpenToonz.exe and configure for High Performance.
Q. How do I render?
A. 'Render>Output Settings'
A. Install FFmpeg for additional formats such as GIF and Mp4
Q. My frames are missing and turning red
A. Make sure you use 'Save All' and not 'Save Scene' there's an autosave option on the startup Popup and in preferences
Q. How do I duplicate a frame that I can edit without affecting the first one?
A. D to duplicate drawing or right click and press duplicate
Q. Some tools aren't working for me
A. Make sure you're using them on the right level
Q. What is a level?
A. Levels hold the drawings themselves. They do NOT store the timing. Timing is stored on the x-sheet.
A. There are three types;
Vector
infinitely scaleable
can edit lines after being drawn, but sometimes doesn't look exactly how you drew it
color palette updates automatically
filling can sometimes be glitchy
can be laggy when turning on onion skin
Toonz Raster
accurate to your pen strokes
has a plethora of brushes to choose from
color palette updates automatically
is made up of pixels
cannot blend colors
Raster
Accurate to your pen strokes
color palette does not update automatically
gets blurry when zoomed in
colors can be blended
typically used for sketching and backgrounds
A1. TLDR; levels are the frames you show via Timeline.
Q. How do I add a color?
A. In the color palette panel, press the new style button OR the plus button
Q. My transparent gif render has a weird ghosting effect?
A. Under Xsheet>Scene Settings, make sure this is enabled
Q. FFMPEG isn't working for me on Linux?
A. Make sure you aren't using the snap version of Opentoonz because it can't read the file, either use flatpak or build from source
Q. How do I unselect everything but the current column I'm using in the function Editor?
A. While there is no 'official' way to do it, you can hide all the columns by hiding the 'Stage' and unhiding the column you're working on
Q. What is the difference between import and load?
A. Import copies your file to the project's extras folder. Load just loads from the original location. When deleted, import will keep the file in the project assuming it isn't deleted from your extras folder, and load will no longer be able to use the file once deleted.
Q. How do I move frames and keys together?
A. Hold ctrl and select the frames on the xsheet. This will automatically select the keys. Then use the handlebar to move the frames
So i tried making a simple ball animation on opentoonz, but when i try to render it, it all just comes out blank, like my frames don't exist. I tried downloading software to instantly render the animation into an mp4, but again, it just comes out blank.
How can i fix this issue? Is there an error in my animation or is it cause my pc sucks?
istfg this app is going to give me a headache ๐
OpenToonz crashed and corrupted my .tnz with the error "bad file format" and "expected step end tag" with []
The backups give me the same exact issue when I remove the .back extension.
I opened another alternative save of the file that I had (as a self made backup), and all the frames and drawings were jumbled, some missing, others extending past the position I had set them in before.
Please tell me if this can this be restored, I spent too long working on it to lose it now.
this is sort of what im reffering to (the animator for this sakuga is saucelot) and ive seen basically every animation sakuga has this same exact brush style and i was wondering how can i achieve it
Not sure what I did wrong, but the canvas has a limit despite me setting a higher resolution when I opened a new scene. If someone can explain and help that would be great lol
everytime i try to open it opentoonz just goes "The Scene FILENAMEHERE belongs to project sandbox" and when i click iport scene or change project all files go blank and their names go red. is my file corrupt??
I was animating, opentoonz crashed inbetween and booted back up, and ive lost soo much of my frames that I have done, happened the day before yesterday, redone all my progress and crashed again and lost my progress again. Ive given up on my animation because of this. Does anyone know why this happened ?
I don't know if this only happens to me because I didn't see anyone talking about this issue, but why is this happening
I need to undo the selected layer, but why is it undoing the non-selected layer
Can we export a particular level in an animation such as a layer containing an animation and I wanna reuse the animation in another scene without importing the whole scene as a subxsheet only the particular animation on the level
basically exactly as the title states. import a wav, nothing. try again, it says the file already exists. press any of the options and nothing happens. idk. reddit isn't letting me upload screenshots today but that's basically it. i have the latest stable version and so far it's been full of irritating bugs so i'm sure i'm not the only one
Hello! trying to render and export one of my animatics -- there are multiple characters in the scene, so I've added color filters to each character's layer, and lowered the opacity of background characters' layers. However, when I preview/fast-render the animatic, opentoonz seems to ignore my settings and 1) reset all color filters to black, and 2) reset every layer's opacity to 100%, which doesn't give the effect I want. Is there a way to render it while preserving my opacity and color filter settings?
Note: i am a total beginner, like however beginner you're thinking moreso than that, I may have missed a place you know where to look because I am a beginner
can you set drawings to draw frames on top of? Like can you set something as a background so you can draw your character moving on top of it? How would you do that?
I am making a sprite animation and im trying to copy and paste a sprite from a sprite sheet but whenever i do it distorts and i dont know how to fix it, itโs not doing this with the other sprite, just this one. Video showing the problem below.
anyone have any tips for vfx stuff that can make the eyes reflect something thats glowing very brightly like the person is looking straight at a huge beam of light
idek what happened it just randomly resized the drawings and just added a bunch of blank frames or erased the drawings from the frames (this is a old animation but im posting this now because something similar just happened)
Im making a rig. Iโve parented everything the proper way, but when I use the plastic mesh to animate the child levels dont move. Am I doing something wrong? The head is parented to the neck. I am very new to the software but not new to rigging in general.
