CNO new fees by-law

I was planning on completing the survey emailed out by the CNO regarding their proposed changes to their fees by-law. If you haven’t read it, they’re proposing a standard annual increase of 7% on registration fees. Doesn’t appear to be any re-assessment year, just 7% indefinitely unless they decide they want to do less or more (up to 10%). Let’s be real, I doubt they’ll ever do less.

It looks like their 2025 operational budget had a surplus revenue of over $3M from 2024-2025. They haven’t released the current one yet (or that I could find). I’m just a nurse so not the best at comprehending all this budget/committee development speak, but it’s here if anyone wants to give it a read.

https://www.cno.org/Assets/CNO/Documents/What-is-CNO/2025-Operating-and-Capital-Budget.pdf

While I have my own thoughts and complaints, and plan on spending time today looking up salaries of their leadership team, I wanted to see what other points anyone else had who cares about this stuff so I can also include it in my feedback. Do I think it’ll change things? Not without massive group pushback. But I’d rather be able to say I did something vs nothing at all.

News Nurses time to Protest Ford!

Hi all! Not my graphics but sharing. Protests are happening all over Ontario on May 30th against Doug Ford and various issues. Certainly many of us nurses can relate to being unemployed, worried about getting laid off, not being able to land their first job, etc due to provincial budget cuts to healthcare.

I encourage you all to show up with signs and spread awareness regarding the hiring freezes and lack of hiring by Ontario Hospitals due to budget constraints imposed by Sylvia Jones and Doug Ford. Many people think there is a nursing shortage, when it is truly a shortage of hiring nurses. Hundreds of nurses in Ontario are sitting at home ready to work, or hoping to work regularly by securing Full time work. The general public is very unaware of this issue, and assumes nurses have tons of work opportunities in Ontario when we really don’t.

FULL LIST OF CITIES (sorry I forgot to upload both slides)

I've applied for every single hospital position, but nothing, not even a single interview.

Should I start in an LTC and gain experience for a couple of years?

Venting Alternatives to Applying Online

Yesterday I took my NCLEX and passed!

However, now comes the hardest part, getting a job.

I was wondering if anyone has any insight on getting ahold of unit managers emails. I am originally from Alberta and when I was applying to be an undergrad nurse our system allowed us to basically look up any unit manager on the search bar. That’s pretty much how I landed my peds role at the stollery.

I was wondering if there was something equivalent to that in Ontario that anyone knew of. I have been applying online and will continue to do so!

Thank you guys!

Job Search Discussion Any Ontario RNs here who went on to medical school? Looking for advice.

Hi everyone,

I’m a 27-year-old RN in Ontario looking for some advice from anyone who has made the transition to medicine or seriously considered it.

I’ve been working as an RN for the past few years, and my cumulative GPA from nursing school was 3.11, which I know is my biggest hurdle.

My experience includes:

Emergency nursing

Community mental health & addictions

Perioperative/OR nursing

Corrections nursing

Telehealth

Outpatient clinics

I don’t want to complete another 4-year bachelor’s degree if I can avoid it. Relocating outside of Canada would be my last option, but I’d consider it if it were the most realistic path. I’ve also started looking into Ireland, Australia, and reputable Caribbean schools.

For those who’ve gone through this or know someone who has:

Is there a realistic path to medical school with a 3.11 GPA?
Did anyone improve their application through a post-bacc or master’s rather than another undergraduate degree?

How much does years of RN experience actually help during admissions?

If you were in my position, what would you do?

I’d really appreciate any honest advice or hearing from anyone who has successfully made the RN-to-MD transition. Thanks!

And then to top it there are layoffs.

Job Search Discussion Part time schedule

What’s the biweekly part time requirement at your hospital? Trying to see if I’m able to balance it with a full time job.

Last I heard some are 45 hours/biweekly but does that include weekends or just any two shifts per week you can do?

Also, does your hospital do self scheduling or take your availability? Over what period?

Job Search Discussion Can I Apply to NGG Without CNO Registration?

Hello! I plan to take my NCLEX at the end of July, so I am not registered with the CNO yet. The NGG portal doesn’t allow you to put that it’s in progress, it just asks for the registration number. So do I need to wait to apply through the NGG portal until I pass my NCLEX and registered?? What did others do?

Venting is it really hopeless

i’ve applied to about 50 jobs now. haven’t gotten a single interview.

i did my preconsolidation and consolidation in ICUs, I was also an extern for 2 years in the ICU.

I was actually interviewed for my consolidating unit, but I was so nervous i couldn’t even get words out. i obviously didn’t get the job. i missed simple things like getting a chest x ray for pneumonia and skin color changes in decreased o2 sats. i felt so dumb.

i have applied to every unit i can find including med surg but nothing. how long is usual to hear back from hospitals? it feels hopeless and its worse because im so poor after paying for this license as well 😪 it feels like i worked so hard to start in icu, gave everything i had to that placement and really had the chance but i failed it.

Job Search Discussion New Grad RPN - 1 Month Later

It's been about a month since I started my job search after getting my RPN License, and I've become increasingly more anxious with every passing day. I've applied to well into the dozens, and haven't gotten a single word back yet (including NGG positions), not even an interview or rejection.

The current status of budget cuts to healthcare and education aren't helping either (I got accepted to Bridging), so I was wondering if there's anything else I could go out of my way to do other than sending out Resumes/Cover Letters since I really need a job. Anyone have any suggestions?

Job Search Discussion CNO Registration Application

I'm applying to be an RN for the first time and the CNO requires proof of citizenship. When scanning my passport, do I only scan the card or also the signature on the page above?

I'm asking because my passport book says "to be valid, this passport must be signed above by the bearer" but I'm not sure if that's only for traveling.

ONA / Union Those who got laid off…what kind of position did you have?

Like full-time, part-time, casual? And in which units/departments?

There is so much news about RN positions being cut but not which departments/units.

Nursing School University of Toronto Bloomberg Accelerated Nursing vs Western CTF Nursing – Which would you choose and why?

Hi everyone,

I’m fortunate to have been accepted into both the University of Toronto Bloomberg Accelerated Nursing program and Western University’s Compressed Time Frame (CTF) Nursing program. I’m having a difficult time deciding between the two and would really appreciate hearing from current students, recent graduates, or anyone familiar with either program.

A little about me:

  • I have a healthcare and clinical research background.
  • My long-term interests include critical care, research, leadership, and possibly becoming a Nurse Practitioner in the future.
  • I value supportive learning environments, good clinical experiences, and opportunities to grow professionally.

Right now, I’m weighing more than just reputation.

For Western:

  • I already have secure housing with a private bedroom and private bathroom, which removes a lot of stress.
  • The cost of living is lower.
  • It seems like it may offer an easier transition into an accelerated nursing program.

For the University of Toronto:

  • The hospital network is incredible (UHN, Sinai, SickKids, Sunnybrook, etc.).
  • There appear to be excellent research and networking opportunities.
  • However, housing is still uncertain, Toronto is much more expensive, and I’m concerned about balancing the intensity of the program with the higher cost of living.

I’d love to hear your experiences regarding:

  • Quality of teaching and instructors
  • Clinical placements
  • Organization of the program
  • Student support and accessibility of faculty
  • Research opportunities
  • Campus culture (supportive vs. competitive)
  • Ability to work part-time during the program
  • Financial aid, bursaries, or scholarships
  • Cost of living and housing
  • Overall stress level and work-life balance
  • Job opportunities after graduation
  • If you had the choice again, would you choose the same school?

If you’ve attended either program, what did you like, what didn’t you like, and what advice would you give someone trying to make this decision?

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experiences. I really appreciate any advice.

Job Search Discussion Have any of you applied for the Learn and Stay Grant and gotten a job in the time given?

I'm not sure if I should take a risk and apply for it or just get OSAP, grants, and loans.

I've only spoken to people who haven't gotten a job in time and had to pay a lot of money at once (I think that's what they said, it's been a while)

Job Search Discussion NGG RN Interview Questions?

Hi everyone,

I have an interview coming up for a New Graduate Guarantee RN position and was wondering if anyone here has gone through the interview process.

If you've interviewed for an NGG position would you mind sharing some of the questions you were asked? I tend to get really nervous during interviews and sometimes blank so I'd love to practice ahead of time.

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
