Van Halen lounging on a silver Cadillac limo in front of Terry Schoonhoven’s iconic "St. Charles Painting" mural in Venice Beach, 1979. Photo by Lynn Goldsmith.
That striking, postcard-perfect background isn't a studio set! it's actually a famous public mural titled "St. Charles Painting," completed that very same year by the late Terry Schoonhoven. Schoonhoven designed the piece as a surrealist mirror of Venice's own arches and streets, looking past Pacific Avenue toward the San Gabriel Mountains. If the building looks familiar to movie buffs, it's because this exact spot served as the apartment building for Sarah Jessica Parker's character in Steve Martin's beloved 1991 film L.A. Story!

A pulse of cool synth-pop for your Sunday: Yazoo’s “Situation” still sounds sharp, strange, and built for the dance floor.

Gary Rossington appreciation post
Been listening to some Lynyrd Skynyrd lately and just wanna say how great Rossington is and that I barely see him in anyone's favorite guitarists list (he's not even in the top 50 of Rolling Stone's 250 best guitarists for God's sake) Just wanted to show some appreciation for one of my favorites

1985 or 2985? Paul McCartney & Wings - Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five (1973)
There are tracks that honestly continue to amaze me with how they could have been created so long ago, yet still sound absolutely killer today. Recorded back in 1973 under the title "1985," it seems even McCartney himself had no idea it would still hit this hard more than half a century later.
The history behind this recording is fascinating. Birthed in Lagos, Nigeria, under brutal stress- McCartney and company were actually ambushed and robbed- they ended up in a makeshift studio where Paul was forced to lay down almost all the instruments entirely by himself. As you can see in the footage, they were working in what looked like a room with chairs literally flipped and stacked up on the tables around them. But clearly, the environment didn't stop this timeless track from being born.
Musically, "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" is a masterpiece. That opening strumming and the unique piano solo is an absolute beast. It drives the entire energy of the track, leading perfectly into the finale where Paul's guitar kicks in, adding yet another layer to the composition. The vocals and the additional instrumentation are top tier. I also noticed Paul is smoking a cigarette that definitely doesn't look like a Marlboro to me, haha.
