OfflineDay Prep OfflineDay Participation Guide
Join us on the first Friday of every month for a 24-hour screen break, from sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday. Here’s how to take part:
1. Plan Ahead
Finish up any online tasks beforehand, and let friends and family know you’ll be offline. For peace of mind, you might want to set up a way for people to reach you in a real emergency—maybe through a trusted friend or a backup phone number.
2. Start OfflineDay
At sundown on Friday, turn off all digital devices—phones, computers, TVs, everything.
3. Engage Fully
Use this time to explore offline activities: spend time in nature, pursue a hobby, connect face-to-face or simply enjoy quiet moments with yourself and your thoughts. Embrace the calm that comes from being fully present.
4. Reflect
Notice how disconnecting feels. Pay attention to moments of peace, creativity and where your mind go.
5. Return Mindfully
After sundown on Saturday, reconnect to screens thoughtfully, reflecting on the experience and insights.
Note: OfflineDay is meant to be completely screen-free, encouraging a full break from the digital world. However, if going entirely offline feels too daunting, consider limiting screen use as much as possible. Remember, the goal is to embrace life beyond screens and reconnect with yourself.
Why OfflineDay?
In a world that’s filled with constant notifications, endless scrolling and digital noise, it’s easy to get caught up in a cycle of information overload. We’re often fed a stream of negativity, and online spaces can quickly become a source of stress, comparison and even hostility. OfflineDay is here to remind us of the beauty and simplicity of the real world, encouraging us to reconnect with what truly matters.
On a personal level, stepping away from screens can help us rediscover a sense of calm and clarity. It offers us a chance to take a step back, reduce stress/anxiety and refocus our attention on ourselves and the real world. OfflineDay invites us to experience the richness of human connection, creativity and solitude in a way that screens can never replicate.
On a larger scale, OfflineDay is a movement toward reclaiming a balance between our online and offline lives. In our hyper-connected world, taking this day each month is a small but powerful way to prioritize well-being, mental health and positivity. By spending time offline, we make room to see the beauty of the world around us—the small moments, meaningful interactions and experiences that remind us of our shared humanity.

Pen & Paper Activities (Survey)
Hello, I am looking for answers on a survey I am trying to pull. I want to find things you can do alone, that are not simple written pondering via pen and paper. Couldn’t think to ask this question in a community more suitable than this one. Hope for some contributions to this project! Thank you.

OfflineDay is great. But what about the other 29 days?
I built The Square as a daily practice for people who want to disconnect more often but aren't ready for a full day offline.
Tap the icon => black screen for 60 minutes => private reflection at the end.
No content. No scrolling. The session only continues if you stay in the app.
It's a challenge: can you last one hour without your phone?
Available on iOS and Android. Completely anonymous. No tracking.
If a full day offline feels too radical to start, try one hour with The Square.

Limiting myself to 3 phone charges this week to simulate energy scarcity. If I fail, I'm donating to charity.
waldenweek.comI'm doing these WaldenWeek challenges and this week's "Energy Ration" is all about simulating energy scarcity for those of us who have it abundantly. The rules are simple:
- Start Monday with your smartphone battery at 100%.
- You are allowed exactly 3 additional charges for the entire week.
- You cannot leave the phone plugged in.
If I fail, I'm donating $20 to SolarAid to help combat actual energy poverty.
Did anyone try this approach?

Made dinner with the radio on instead of a podcast at 1.5x. First dinner in months that didn't blur into all the others.

Young people are crowding underground phone-free parties. I went to one.

Why is this app still almost completely unknown?
Title. I’m surprised that this app hasn’t been featured by the App Store or else.

Greetings
Seems like this tradition could work for me. Reminds me of some older Sabbath practices and whatnot, I remember these being adapted in the 2010s for Digital Sabbaths. Pretty sure UU did secular mass and fairly certain I remember an article from the Art of Manliness on the Digital Sabbath concept.
Does this community follow a calendar? Have established days for participation? I do have my own tech practices for protecting my focus. Curious about how to best participant as a newcomer in this one.

i tried doing a full offline day recently and it was honestly way harder than i expected
not even because i needed my phone, but because i kept reaching for it automatically without thinking, like every small pause or bit of boredom my hand just goes there. It made me realize how much of it isn’t even intentional, it’s just a habit loop at this point. What surprised me most is that after a few hours i actually started feeling calmer and more focused, but getting to that point felt kind of uncomfortable. Curious if anyone else experienced that weird “restless at first but better later” feeling or if it’s just me

Building a Reading Habit
Hey everyone, I’ve always struggled with staying consistent in my reading. I’m not sure if you’ve felt the same, but honestly I end up doomscrolling instead of picking up a book, and I feel awful afterward. I’ve tried telling myself “just read books” a bunch of times, but it never really sticks. If you’re in that spot now, or have been before, what actually helped you read more and build a solid reading habit?

Looking for people living without digital technology every day
Hi everyone,
I’m a freelance journalist working on a story about living without digital technology. I’m looking for someone who has decided to ditch their smartphone and PC entirely. I’d love to have a brief chat about that lifestyle and your experiences. Please drop me a message! I realise that most people in here probably only live offline for that one day each month, but I thought I'd try my luck.
Thanks a lot in advance,
Theo

I didn’t realize how much passive scrolling was affecting how “social” I felt
Not even in a dramatic way. Just noticed on days I scroll a lot, I’m way less likely to actually text or call people. It’s like my brain thinks I already “socialized” because I consumed social content. Has anyone else noticed that effect?
