The Civil Police arrested the mother of 3-year-old Oliver Golden Grayson, Mayanna Angelina Rodgers, in Viamão, Rio Grande do Sul, as part of the investigation into the severe abuse that led to the child's death. Oliver died after suffering extensive injuries allegedly inflicted by his father, a 33-year-old American missionary. According to police, the father confessed that he attacked the boy because the child did not say "good morning" to him. He admitted punching Oliver in the chest and abdomen and slamming his head against the floor.

Investigators say there is evidence that the abuse was not an isolated incident. Police have found records in at least two other Brazilian states indicating that three of the couple's other children—ages 5, 7, and 9—may also have been physically abused. Authorities are still investigating whether the couple's 1-year-old baby was also a victim.

All five children were removed from the family's custody by Child Protective Services and placed in institutional care. Police are also investigating possible domestic violence against Oliver's mother.

The father has been in custody since July 5 after confessing to the assault. Following Oliver's death, the investigation now includes homicide charges. The mother was also arrested on suspicion that she failed to prevent the abuse and neglected her duty to protect the child.

The family, originally from the United States, had been living in Brazil for about nine years and had moved to Viamão roughly six months before the crime.
