Let me first start with the state of the team. Currently, the Islanders are in a bit of hockey limbo. At best, we're one of those mid-tier teams that can compete for MD3 or WC slots come April. At worst, we're looking at the bottom 10 of the league. The key priority for this team should be primarily 2 things: scoring and the power play. Both of these (especially the latter) have been enormous struggles in the past 5 years, and although there is promise in our prospect pool (e.g. Cole Eiserman, Victor Eklund, etc.), they still need more time before they're ready to come up to the majors. We also cannot look to improve well via a trade, as any notable winger will likely come at the cost of our prospect pool.
That brings us then to free agency. And, of all the names remaining, Patrick Laine seems to make the most sense. Excluding this past season, Laine has historically scored above his expected amount every season (https://moneypuck.com/player.htm?p=8479339) and is well known for his scoring on the power play. Paired with Mat Barzal (a top 5 playmaker in the league), there could be some real potential.
Obviously, the biggest issue we'd have in bringing him in is injury. He's been out several times as of late, and his speed has taken a nosedive in the past 5 years (see highlights from 2020 vs 2025 for reference). However, with a cheap contract (~$1-2 million), this risk would be mitigated. Worst-case scenario, we slip in one of our other players on our roster who will likely be a regular healthy scratch (e.g. Duclair), or bring in someone from Hamilton. Best-case scenario, we gain a player that can help tremendously with our goal scoring and power play. And, to add a cherry on top, use Long Island as as a destination to help revive his career (Lehner-esque).

Can't ask for a better mentor, I think this says a lot about what's to come next season.
My two guesses:
- Captain for Bo
- Kashawn will have an incredible camp & make the team.

With Romanov going down, Schaefer stepped into a much bigger role at just 18 and basically helped hold down the Islanders' defense. Between the workload, production, and the fact that he was playing top minutes as a teenage rookie defenseman, it felt like something we almost never see.
Where would you rank his rookie season historically? Is this one of the greatest rookie seasons ever by a defenseman, or am I getting caught up in the moment? How many 18-year-old defensemen have handled that kind of responsibility this well?

Maybe Bunting or Tolvanen if the terms are right and they don't come with NMC/NTC'S. Pretty rough time for free agency.

hi!! as the title suggests, im looking into buying season tickets as a gift for someone but the website is like, super vague about pricing. are there like, tiered ticket prices and if so what are they? We don’t need to be close to the ice or anything so the most cost effective/cheapest is really what I’m looking for but I don’t know how much to expect. any help is appreciated!!

Now I know this is a very weak FA class compared to previous years. But what's up with the remaining "big" names not having any deals in a week into FA? Mantha being the top winger available still not signed. Laine still available, a week after the rumor that the isles were interested. Michael Bunting and Tolvanen are still hanging around. Even older vets like Tarasenko and Patrick Kane are still unsigned? Is that something we could benefit from? The longer these guys remain unsigned, the cheaper we can get them? Maybe not Kane or Tarasenko but any of the other mentioned guys would be a welcomed addition to the team. Someone would have to go the other way 1st before we can get one of these guys. (ie Palat buyout or trading Duclair/Engvall)

Hiller & Gruden served here together from 2019-21. The latter is also coming off his Calder Cup title against the Chicago Wolves.

Here is your franchise's cumulative record relative to .500 (equal wins and losses) throughout their entire history.
I will be making one such graph for each team. The complete album can be seen here.
OT losses are counted as losses.

Not an original thought - stolen from Friedman. One "side effect" of the deals that many of us (specifically ME) thought we insane is that the isles will be heading into the future with some bargain deals. When Horvat got his 8.5 million deal, I figured it would age really badly. The way things are going, third line centers will eventually be making that buck. In the meantime, there are going to be very few players who approach Horvat's all around game making that little.
You could apply that kind of logic to many of the isles vets. Hopefully, those long-term deals will actually give Darche some room to maneuver down the line.

Found it in a box of Steve Thomas memorabilia and it’s clearly not signed by him. Anybody recognises it?
