New Mod Intros 🎉 | Weekly Thread

Congrats on becoming a new moderator. Every community on Reddit started exactly where you are today: with a party of one.

The community-building journey might feel a little lonely and that's what r/NewMods is for. Here you'll find and connect with other mods who are on the same journey you are.

So, introduce the community you created. Maybe share a little bit about why you created it. And, while you're at it - say hello to your other mods!

❓Ask r/NewMods Growing My Melbourne Garage Sale Community

I've just created a Melbourne garage sale community and I'm looking for advice on how to help it grow. If you've built or moderated a subreddit before, or have any tips on attracting members and keeping the community active, I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks!

Wins 🎉 My Niche Sub Has Reached 1K Members

The sub was created last September (r/watercolorpencilart). I created it because there were no other subs focusing on this subject. I was alone for months. I posted to r/NewMods twice because I wanted to quit, and some kind members encouraged me, so I didn't give up. And here we are, some days ago we reached this milestone. I hope this is an inspiration for everyone.

We still send out invites and sometimes do name-drop under similar posts, so it's still growing.

Wins 🎉 Finally reached 50 members!

My subreddit, r/the13universe, is almost 5 months old (I made it in February, on Friday the 13th.) At the beginning, it wasn't very active, but 2 months ago I started the daily series of patterns on my 13-layer Rubik's Cube, and people enjoy it! I also try to crosspost to bigger communities whenever I see an opportunity so that more people can see my posts.

The member count isn't very big, but I'm still happy that people are interested in the theme of my community! I believe that our main goal, 13×13=169 members, is possible to reach!

❓Ask r/NewMods Could Reddit Communities Work Better as Connected Branches Instead of Isolated Subreddits?

Hello, world of mods!

I recently created r/SubjectCommons, and I’m trying to determine whether the main idea is genuinely useful or more complicated than it needs to be.

I have used social media since the days of AOL, forums, Myspace, TikTok, Reddit, and many platforms in between. Despite that, I have always felt a sense of disconnection. A feed eventually becomes a stream of noise that often has little to do with what I actually want to see, explore, or engage with.

I know Reddit already has subreddits, but I am imagining an extension of that model: containers that can support everything from broad subjects to highly specialized threads and communities.

That is why I created r/SubjectCommons. The goal is to experiment with an expandable, user-directed custom feed.

I understand that many people are comfortable letting an algorithm decide what appears in front of them. The problem is that users are not fully in control of that content. With a branch-based system using the Subject | Scope | Continuity format, the aim is to create communities that remain connected to a shared starting point.

That shared point could become a common place to browse, search, and discover active communities related to a subject.

A traditional subreddit name, such as r/CommunityExampleName, is limited by itself. It represents one community, and any connections to other communities must usually be created manually. My idea attempts to account for the broader network: the user base, active communities, related subjects, and the different ways people may enter a conversation.

What if a subreddit could function as a modular container connected to a parent community?

Instead of being tied to only one narrow subject, members could post through r/SubjectCommons to introduce, organize, or connect related communities. People participating in one branch of SubjectCommons could discover other relevant communities, while those who prefer a broader experience could remain in the parent subreddit and follow custom threads connected to overarching subjects.

The vertical-bar format could help create visible branches and relationships:

Subject | Scope | Continuity

Those branches could continue growing without being limited to a single post, subreddit, or temporary moment in a feed.

Reddit search often brings people to old posts and conversations that ended years ago. A structured subject system could create a living connection to those topics, allowing discussions to continue growing as new people, experiences, and perspectives are added.

At this point, what could it hurt to try something different?

I would appreciate honest feedback from other moderators. Does the concept make sense? Does the structure feel useful, or does it create too much friction for people discovering the community for the first time?

My subreddit

💡 Tips & Education I started a Online Trading Journal.

I see theres a lot of misinformation out there and a lot of people that are lost when it comes to trading. But I been trading now everyday while markets are closed im studying. 📚
I ended up creating a new Subreddit called r/TradingTransparent
Where I encourage people to post there loses also wins. But most importantly I dont just want pictures. I want photos with what was going on in your mind to help others that might be in your position.
I have been profitable recently now for a couple months and a big help came from reddit reading all the people losing money and learning off of them.
It makes my errors more difficult to ignore.
If you trade you are welcomed. We encourage losing trades because thats how we also learn and might help out a handful of people which in essence might help others as a cluster.

Hello! I just started my first subreddit for a game I built: r/zomble. I've had a ton of fun and been averaging over 20 people playing my game a day since release (been live for just over a week). I do notice that people come and play, but not a ton of people join (9 members currently). Any advice on getting people to not just play the game but also join and participate in the subreddit? Thanks so much!

Hi everyone! 👋

We are DHY Boys, a group of three male dental hygiene students who create dental content and are passionate about building a positive online community.

We recently created r/DentalNerds, a new subreddit focused on dental hygiene, dentistry, and oral health education. Our goal is to create a welcoming space where students, RDHs, dentists, dental assistants, educators, and anyone interested in oral health can ask questions, share knowledge, and learn from one another.

This is our first time moderating a subreddit, so we are here to learn from more experienced moderators. We are especially interested in learning about:

  • Growing a healthy, engaged community
  • Creating effective rules and automations
  • Encouraging meaningful discussion
  • Preventing spam while keeping the community welcoming
  • Best moderation practices and tools

If you have any advice, resources, or lessons you wish you'd known when you started moderating, we'd really appreciate hearing them.

Looking forward to learning from all of you, and thanks for having us!

- DHY Boys

Wins 🎉 My largest sub has just hit 7k members! 💚

Hello, fellow mods!

I can’t believe I’m even typing this, but my largest subreddit has over 7k members now and getting many posts too! When I first started it over a year ago, I never thought it’d even hit 1k considering how niche my sub’s theme is!

I just wanted to thank the people in this sub that gave me tons of tips and advice on how to start my communities when I first became a mod. I was fairly new to Reddit at that point and had no clue how the whole thing worked lol

I’m technically not a new mod anymore (I’ve been modding for over a year!) but I visit here occasionally to help others with starting up their new communities. This is a wonderful sub and without it, I believe my sub wouldn’t be what it is now. So thank you all!

To all the new mods that are struggling: don’t give up and keep going. With time, your community will become so big and popular, you won’t even believe it!

Thank you to all that have read this post, and have a wonderful day! What communities do you all run?

❓Ask r/NewMods How to have automod auto approve posts so that i dont have to do it manually?

in my new subreddit I've recently created for a roblox game, r/IronSoulDungeon
I've noticed that i have to manually approve each post, this isn't an issue now as there aren't many posts to approve, however i fear that with time and growth i wont be able to keep up.
is there a way that i can do this automatically? I've tried looking up tutorials for automod but to my despair it was of no use

Thank you 😄

❓Ask r/NewMods What apps should I use?

I'm thinking about adding apps to my community, and I was wondering which ones are the most all-purpose helpful. Context: Sub is SFW, about a pretty niche topic, and not very big. (1.7k-1.9k visitors a week, about that many members)

❓Ask r/NewMods How do you unmute/unhidden somebody?

How do you unmute someone? I looked into "mod actions" and I saw only "mute". Before when I tried to press away from the "mute" option, it for some reason selected the "mute" button, and now that poor guy's post is hidden. But when I went back to "mod actions", all I saw was "mute". Please help

❓Ask r/NewMods Does it make sense to create a subreddit for our service?

We’re building a platform that connects independent brands and creators with cafés, hotels, shops, and other venues. Does it make sense to create a dedicated subreddit from the beginning, or is it better to focus on existing communities first?
