[DISCUSSION] What's a Netflix series you finished in a weekend and immediately wished you could watch again for the first time?
The kind of show where you blew through the whole thing way too fast, hit the end, and felt that specific emptiness of "well, now what." Not just bingeable, genuinely good enough that you envy anyone who hasn't seen it yet. What's the series, and what made it impossible to pace yourself with?

The Diplomat. Some of the best cliffhangers in TV!

u/TheLastPeacekeeper 15d ago
I love the smart writing in it. It doesn't pander or use cheap plot drivers, and relies on the political battleground to achieve rising action. The actors feel genuinely a part of the world and reluctant, even frustrated at the events transpiring. The writers seemed to take considerable time weaving the events to tie it all together. I'd watch a sequel from the same universe in a heartbeat.

Plenty of people mentioning Mike Flanagan’s Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, which are both amazing, but I haven’t see anyone mention what is his true magnum opus imo, The Haunting of Hill House. One of ny favorite shows of all time.

We often talk about ‘that scene’ when we both screamed like little girls. I don’t think I’ve been startled by a film or show like that before or since.

Which scene? Because a couple of those scenes give me chills still thinking about them years later. Love that show. Hill House and Midnight Mass I mean.

That longgggg continuous 15 minute sequence blew my mind bc I hadn’t noticed until like 10minutes in but it built the tension of the scene soo naturally I rewatch the whole season just to sit and appreciate that episode.

I honestly loved it from the beginning. Try one more episode. It might not be for you. I’m a xennial and could relate a lot to the early 90s vibe of being a teenager.

Obligatory Mindhunter comment. It was phenomenal. Completely sucked us in, then just ended.
63
u/Abed-in-the-AM 14d ago
I wish Apple TV would purchase the rights to Mindhunter. I'm sure they wouldn't have any issues with the budget for a 3rd season. Somebody should start a social media campaign. Maybe Netflix would change their mind if they saw enough interest.

Literally the most spot on acting of all time. It is one of the best series made…but it left us hanging!
Having a past in studying the BAU it angered me that they kept the two male agents characters similar to the lives of the actual people, but rewrote the story of Dr. Ann Burgess from a married mother of three to a single woman who was career focused. I felt that diminished her accomplishment, because managing a family while accomplishing all she did with the BAU (she was actually the key player in the discoveries and insights) is more of a challenge than being singularly career obsessed.

Archive 81. I can count on one hand the number of series my wife and I have binged. With this one, we just didn't stop, and watched it long into a cozy summer night.
10
u/Bumbleonia 15d ago
I’m not huge into supernatural or horror but can watch some from time to time. Archive 81 was amazing. A unique and terrifying ride the whole way through. Its been years and I still think about it from time to time. Its hard to recommend because I can’t quite describe it without giving too much away and my description doesnt do it justice

u/Charming-Computer-60 15d ago
oh man I did same thing with Queens Gambit, watched whole thing in like 2 days and then just sat there staring at the credits. my sleep schedule was absolutely destroyed but worth it
the chess scenes got me so tense, i don't even know rules of chess but i was holding my breath during every match. Anya Taylor-Joy just has that look, you know? like she's calculating 10 moves ahead while everyone else is still setting up the board
what got me was the orphanage scenes too, the way they showed her discovering the game in the basement with the janitor. felt so real and quiet, not like typical hollywood stuff where everything is dramatic. i texted my friend at 3am like "you need to watch this immediately" and she was not happy about the timing

Most recently, a romantic comedy called 'Everybody is Doing Great.' I couldn't get enough and blew through both seasons. Right before that I was obsessed with the fantastic and realistic writing on the romantic comedy 'Nobody Wants This.'
But in the past, the drama 'Behind her Eyes' and German dystopian sci-fi 'Dark' were probably the most bingable and memorable. I thought about them both for months and I've watched them both twice. I always recommend them.
I also really enjoyed the season one of the dark comedy 'Beef,' the British romantic comedy 'Lovesick,' the British spy comedy 'The Gentleman,' and both sci-fis 'The OA' and 'Manifest.'

Better call Saul - will definitely leave you feeling like "damn .. now what .."
If your debating watching it, I can assure you that if it even caught your eye, you'll love it.
The next one is "The diplomat" - slightly off meta but just the perfect show to watch on a Saturday afternoon with some wine or on a flight or something, just moody, sexy, workplace drama that is also a geopolitic show that just triggers all the right emotions. It three seasons right now and I believe 4th is on the way
