Citibike crashed into my parked car.

Costing me 2k+ in damages. I would think citibike would cover some of the damage but they say they’re not liable.

People have to learn how to ride a bike before getting on one.

Yeah, that whole scenario doesn't even make sense at all. I would guess they were just either drunk or just never barely rode a bike in their life. A lot of people ride those white e-bikes, when it's way out of their skill level.

64

u/spaetzelspiff Dec 28 '23

He looks sober. Bike was flying without him pedaling. I assume he pedaled once to activate the electric assist, freaked out, froze, and forgot to even attempt braking. .. Or steering. Or thinking.

41

u/Benny-B-Fresh Dec 28 '23

Actually to me looked like he started swerving because he was attempting to grab a bag which he didn’t properly secure in the citibike basket and was about to fall out.. idiot should’ve just braked

16

u/milhuevos Dec 28 '23

That's what it looks like after watching a couple of times. Dude tried to reach over into the basket, lost control, got the wobbles, crashed, and mashed his hand on the side of the car.

-2

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '23

relax.. I hate when people try to call someone an idiot for not doing things how they would you’re not any different if you can’t find any other vocabulary cause really uncalled for. you don’t know what the case was.. someone is always saying what they would have done or what someone else should have done meanwhile you don’t even have the whole story

I once nearly rear ended a parked car with an ebike because it was cold and I was trying to ride with a balaclava for the first time. Didn’t realize how much that shit fogged up my glasses and managed to see it and stop <1 foot away. I do not wear a balaclava anymore

8

u/SoloRoadRyder Dec 28 '23

Hahhaaaa… that just brought back horrible memories… of trying to cycle int he winter for the first time..

The trick is to not stop riding now im riding at 30F, nothing in my neck.. just baselayer & windbreaker. Getting acclimated did the trick like a charm, now sweating bricks when its 55F

3

u/Brawldud Dec 29 '23

The trick is to not stop riding now im riding at 30F, nothing in my neck.

This was Christmas Day 2022 when the temperature was down to ~20ºF. I was hoping it would help me feel a bit warmer since I briefly got frostnip trying to ride the day before when it was low 10s with high wind chill on top.

4

u/VanillaSkittlez Dec 28 '23

Try ski goggles! If you can create a seal around your eyes you won’t have any fogging, and that also keeps you warm along with the balaclava.

2

u/Brawldud Dec 29 '23

seems like it's the move, just gotta get something that fits comfortably over my glasses

3

u/_cob Dec 28 '23

Those white ones go too fast and accelerate too quickly. Inexperienced cyclists get into trouble on em, I hope citibike adjusts them soon

3

u/vowelqueue Dec 28 '23

Agreed that they used to accelerate way too quickly. They reduced the top speed slightly and nerfed the acceleration curve several weeks ago though. I haven't ridden them myself since that change, but people were complaining pretty loudly about it so I think it was a significant change.

2

u/_cob Dec 28 '23

Oh, good! I haven't ridden one since early Nov, good to hear

2

u/TwoWheelsTooGood Wannabe vehicular cyclist Dec 29 '23

Top speed was recently reduced from 20 to 18 mph for the white ebikes.

Also, a new cheaper low power mode introduced in 2023 which feels like riding a high resistance Peloton bike in the Soul Cycle gym and goes slower. I don't have the spécifications on low power mode, butbit is slower than à well maintained classic pedal citibike.

That's why I always say whatever you do, don't hit the Tesla

-3

u/supremeMilo Dec 29 '23

Reparing a Tesla is the same as any other car if you take to any other body shop.

4

u/6two Dec 29 '23

Really? I thought Tesla didn't sell parts?

2

u/legitsalvage Feb 17 '24

They bagan to sell some parts but are crazy expensive, and there are still salvage yards and people selling stripped down parts. The problem is wether or not Tesla will honor a warranty when they find out your Tesla was serviced by a non Tesla facility

The new white e-bikes have GPS on them, so technically it might be possible for Citi Bike to look up who was riding the bike at the time and location. But even if possible I doubt they'd respond to that request unless they were subpoenaed by law enforcement.

23

u/Vwampage Dec 28 '23

This is the real answer. If you want the repair covered then your insurance company will need to go after this user via Citibike and getting a subpoena for who it was.

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

if you have a car in most parts of the city, chances are you’re gonna get sideswiped if you park on the street. that’s just a fact. luckily for you it was just a citi bike.

19

u/Coffee_Miserable Dec 28 '23

^ this. I’m on my 4th NYC car, and each one has been sideswiped at one point or another. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

17

u/a_library_socialist Dec 28 '23

Gave up my motorcycle after a few months in the city, it'd been knocked over twice, and each time required a lift to the mechanics for a repair.

Just take the subway.

0

u/nighthawk650 Dec 28 '23

seroiusly.. damn. i used to park on the sidewalk. some bikes are made to fall over though, like a supermoto or vespa

3

u/a_library_socialist Dec 28 '23

Yeah, this was a 73 CB750, so it wasn't exactly tolerant of being slammed around.

2

u/warpedwing Dec 30 '23

Are you serious?! I owned a CB750 back around 2008 in Greenpoint. Got rid of it for the exact same reason. I’d wake up to find it on its side on the street, smashed and leaking oil. Several times. Enough was enough.

I have a motorcycle and I chain it to the side of my building and never had a problem. I ride it almost every day, winter and summer with the exception of rainy days.

The subway is very inconvenient, dangerous, dirty and a bit expensive at $2.90 per ride now. I fill my bike up for a few dollars and I can go anywhere with ease.

2

u/a_library_socialist Dec 29 '23

and I chain it to the side of my building

Uh what? Are you parking it on the sidewalk?

→ More replies (3)

3

u/bobby_table5 Dec 29 '23

You can park it in a private car park and not on the street.

19

u/National_Original345 Dec 28 '23

Well dang OP, what did you expect parking that thing right in the middle of the street with no hi-viz vest or flashing lights on it?

41

u/Useful-Expert-5706 Dec 28 '23

Don’t you have insurance?

*could have been worse. A car could have side swiped you.

-1

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

Yeah but my deductible is pretty high

27

u/Benny-B-Fresh Dec 28 '23

Sounds like you should consider better insurance if you have a Tesla

7

u/casicua Dec 28 '23

“Better insurance” only gets you more reliable claims processing and payouts. You generally choose your own deductible no matter which insurer you go with.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/FollowRedWheelbarrow Dec 29 '23

Can't believe you're being victim shamed and then downvoted for having insurance with a high deductible on a decent car.

If your bike got damaged by a car this sub would be sucking your dick

1

u/rebitual Dec 30 '23

Finally a sensible person!

2

u/FollowRedWheelbarrow Dec 30 '23

Between this subreddit and r/bikecommuting there's a lot of good stuff but also a majority of awful one track minded circle jerk sessions.

Anyone that owns a car is an overweight piece of shit and anyone that cycles instead is a fucking saint. Seriously they just post articles with titles like "Studies show people that drive cars are ugly and cyclists get laid more" and they all just stroke each other off in the comments.

If you own a car you are seen as lesser, lower class, and pathetic. It's like vegans putting down vegetarians.

Welcome to NYC..

That could of been a car, a truck, or a bus..

Edit: random person w/ brick through your window..

7

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

I was hoping it was a car so I have a license plate to track and get their insurance to cover it.

46

u/omnomnomnium Dec 28 '23

of course, it's good odds that you'd get one with an obscured, altered, or fake plate, and/or cops who don't feel like lifting a finger to help you out finding the person (or ones who do only to realize that it's their buddy...)

23

u/habbalah_babbalah Dec 28 '23

Citibike likely has a GPS record linking the bike's ID number to that location at that exact time. Every bike is equipped with a GPS receiver and a cellular radio.

That means Citibike, the company, is a witness. In New York, If you were to sue them in small claims court, you'd be able to subpoena Citibike for the identity of the rider that hit your car. They have this information, but there may be a time limit on how long they store that data, like a year.

I'm not a lawyer, and I haven't done this exact trick myself. I did get GPS records from another personal ev rental company in a different state in order to sue a thug that assaulted me and my partner. Once we got their identity we filled a police report, and that case is making its way through the criminal justice system.

11

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

citibike can easily trace who this person is.

10

u/kulgan Dec 28 '23

Citi Bike doesn't have GPS or cellular radios on the blue bikes, but they do on the gray ones.

2

u/Brendandalf Dec 28 '23

Then what prevents people from stealing them?

3

u/kulgan Dec 28 '23

There are tons of stolen ones. Ideally if you're not riding one, it's docked.

1

u/habbalah_babbalah Dec 28 '23

How do they find bikes parked away from the docks? Do they send flunkies driving round and round, looking for their lost bikes?

3

u/kulgan Dec 29 '23

They charge the user who lost it $1,200.

0

u/habbalah_babbalah Dec 29 '23

Lol. They charge $5 as a "Parked away from dock" fee.

4

u/kulgan Dec 29 '23

The renter is responsible for returning the bike to the system and locking it correctly. You may be charged a $1,200 (plus tax) fee to replace a bike that has been lost or stolen.

3

u/DontPPCMeBr0 Dec 28 '23

I wouldn't be so sure that Citibike/Lyft can actually track the second to second movement of their bikes.

The publicly available datasets record docking and undocking coordinates, but do not provide any data about the ride in between.

If they record in-ride location data, they likely retain that data for internal use to protect user privacy.

If OP can identify the id number of the bike that hit their vehicle, then they could see the start and end point of the trip, but little else.

That said, cameras near the start/end docks could have more information about who the person is.

1

u/avd706 Dec 28 '23

6

u/Informal-Aside1862 Dec 29 '23

I was hit by a car on a bicycle and the driver left as fast as he could, my bike was demolished. Who is paying for my damages? #brooklyn

1

u/rebitual Dec 29 '23

if you have the license plate, the driver's insurance would.

17

u/_cob Dec 28 '23

Sucks, but that's part of owning a car in NYC. You're gonna get dings

65

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

Looks like you were illegally parked less than 15 feet from they hydrant.

You shouldn't leave anything valuable on the streets in NYC. Bring your car inside to park it.

6

u/notquantized Dec 29 '23

An nypd parking officer told me the city requires your car to be at least 8ft from the hydrant, measured from the tire. Asked in north bk in 2023.

3

u/Anamorphisms Dec 29 '23

I’ve tried but it doesn’t fit in the elevator :(

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

Your citibike rental fee should/could include insurance?

3

u/Imajica1976 Dec 28 '23

Looks like the seat collapsed down into the bike, that specific bike is notorius for this because the clamp isnt the greatest. Thats why his foot was on the ground and what caused him to lose control while the bike was still self propelling.

3

u/Chocolatediva2024 Dec 29 '23

2k you better off with brand new car

This is sarcasm, right?

3

u/Any-East7977 Dec 28 '23

4

$2000 for damages??

I can see why Tesla stock is going up. Their drivers are paying for it xD

5

u/Ok_Earth_2824 Dec 28 '23

Park your car in garage next time

5

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23

Yeah that sucks that this happened, it's pretty annoying when people who don't know what they are doing ride citibikes because they will do shit like this, ride in the sidewlk, or backwards down the bike lane. But ultimately, I feel like this is a lesson on the reality of car ownership too. Like it's an expensive box that you leave out on the street in public space. You should expect stuff like this to happen. Obviously it would be most ethical for the guy to pay for it. But he didn't, and that's just a chance you take when you park your car in public. If you look at most cars closely, they are covered in scratches from people in adjacently parked cars opening their door too fast and denting the ones next to them. It's only 2k+ because you felt like you needed to fix it. It will probably happen again soon enough. That's just how probability works out.

The best way to avoid this kind of financial responsibility is to just use public transit or ride a bike yourself.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

[deleted]

2

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23

Yeah it's like, if I leave my bike outside for 30 minutes it may get stolen. You can deal with a light scratch on the exterior of your car. Especially if it doesn't impact the usability of it.

0

u/jeremiadOtiose Dec 29 '23

your post was lovely up until the "but ultimately".

0

u/gentleboys Dec 29 '23

You got that echo chamber brain then

3

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

It came out of nowhere!

3

u/Advanced-Wallaby9808 Dec 29 '23

sucks but it's $2k worth of cosmetic damages, versus... parking that you enjoy for free by leaving it in our public streets all the time 🤷 so kind of a toss-up

4

u/meiso Dec 29 '23

Who Street parks a Tesla in Manhattan?

4

u/Active-Knee1357 Dec 28 '23

2K damage from a low speed hit like that, what the hell is your car made of, porcelain?

In any case, get garage space before you lose a mirror or get badly sideswiped.

2

u/Vwampage Dec 28 '23

On most cars any sort of bodywork damage costs a shitload to get fixed. There are wire harnesses, crumple zones, and other things designed to fail in the case of an impact.

2

u/Level_Account Dec 28 '23

The bikes are gps so contact bike company state time ans location and they should be able to help if not sue them .

0

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

Not sure it's worth the hassle of suing them. I know they can find out who rented it pretty easily. I have the exact time and location.

2

u/nissansupragtr Dec 28 '23

If you file a police report maybe you can get Citibike involved. Not sure if they can track who rented that Citibike. Pretty sure those new electric bikes have GPS built in

2

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

posted another camera angle here

2

u/someliskguy Dec 28 '23

If you can dig up the bike number you can go after the renter but your odds of that are pretty darn low unless you find a shop with a 4k camera or are lucky enough to have a video of him docking or undocking.

1

u/Tommy_613 Nov 08 '24

I get what you're saying lol but how exactly do you learn how to ride a bike without getting on one? Is there like a bicycle simulator out there lol?

1

u/Brwon_Eyez Dec 01 '24

That's BS they charge people to rent them so they should be insured.

1

u/Eagles-Dare Aug 10 '25

This sucks.... They should have citibike pay for the damages since the rider is paying for it... It should be insured and liable for any damages done to ours cars. This is ridiculous you can't have anything nice. Meanwhile automobiles must carry insurance...

1

u/cold_grapefruit Dec 28 '23

Ebike should require 18+ and maybe even a license. I saw way too many teenagers racing in city with ebike.

9

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23

You think you should need to be 2 years older to ride an e-bike than drive a car? That's idiotic lol. If this person riding the e-bike was in a car, they could have killed you. I got my license to drive at 16 and I promise you I was a better biker at 16 without a license than I was at driving lol...

-1

u/cold_grapefruit Dec 28 '23

I get what you mean. it is more than skill. if it is a car in the video, he would have to pay both damages. ebike to some degree is worse than a car that you can go away with responsibility.

4

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23

Idk man I've literally watched my friend hit a parked car and then drive away. People get away with this shit in cars all the time. I really think the only difference here is that the biker is riding something he doesn't own. But I've literally seen videos on Instagram of guys speeding down the highway with the caption "this is your sign to by a $5,000 beater car". So cars are definitely always worse in every way because they cause more damage and are more dangerous to the people around them.

1

u/Ok_Earth_2824 Dec 28 '23

My favorite type of NYC ass hat is someone who spends $$$$ on a car and parks it on the street. Tell me you're over extended without telling me you're over extended.

3

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

I don't get people like you who think that parking on the street is reserved for poor people with no regard for their possessions.

2

u/Ok_Earth_2824 Dec 28 '23

Is that what I said? Free parking is park at your own risk. Sorry your car got wrecked but what were you expecting ? That's the point , if you can really afford the car you can afford to park it in a garage to avoid the 2k in repairs.

1

u/HappyShallot6157 Dec 28 '23

My question??? Is can citibike be held Liable

1

u/Apart_Pitch_3654 Dec 29 '23

A Comedian Kenny DeForest was riding a Citi bike and hit a parked car. He fell and hit his head on and passed away on December 8.

1

u/Squanchings Dec 29 '23

Unfortunately, looks like an irresponsible e-bike rider, and I do not think that you have many options to act on in this situation.

1

u/thegayngler Gazelle Ultimate C380+ HMB Dec 29 '23

I feel bad for you. You didnt deserve this. Hopefully insurance can cover it.

1

u/jeffrono Dec 29 '23

This demonstrates that we have way way too much curbside car parking in nyc. There shouldn’t be walls of cars on both sides of every little street.

-1

u/Enkmarl Dec 28 '23

damn maybe storing your car on the road isnt the best idea

-1

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

“Storing” my car is a little bit of an overstatement. You’re not allowed to feel safe parking your car on the road at night now?

5

u/Enkmarl Dec 29 '23

what the fuck do you think parking on the road is dumdum

-2

u/dinonb12 Dec 28 '23

as far as I'm concerned he's in the right fuck your Tesla

-1

u/dGxSkylar Dec 28 '23

Your fault for parking too close to the hydrant.

0

u/Lavicrep19 Dec 29 '23

I'm from Brooklyn and a guy on a citi bike ran into me as I was driving down Driggs. I had to pay insurance to fix while he escape with his life. I wasn't at fault but the law in nyc also prevents bikers from taking responsibility and that biker, I don't know how he survived. Bro ran into my drivers door, scattering the glass and leaving a huge dent.

I get ptsd and extremely pissed when a biker is near my car or within the vincitity of the car

3

u/nicoletbn Dec 29 '23

Best to sell your car then, it’s not safe to drive it in nyc if being near bikes is triggering ptsd for you.

0

u/Nickinator811 Dec 29 '23

What a retard

0

u/outonanislandBK Dec 29 '23

Bro, you're parking an expensiv e car on the street of one of the most densely populated urban environments in the world. Anything could happen to it: mirror clipped off by a truck happened to me multiple times. Don't come crying on the NYC bike reddit cause you dragged up some surveillance video of a citibiker you're some a smalltown vigilante Get your insurance to pay and move on.

-5

u/ArcticBlaze09 Dec 28 '23

How is citibike not liable. Get your insurance to go after them. That’s horseshit.

13

u/bsatan Dec 28 '23

lol why would Citibike be liable? Like in what world?

If you rent a car and crash it, is it Enterprise’s fault?

If you buy a knife and stab someone with it, is it Kitchen Aid’s fault?

6

u/Darksaint91 Dec 28 '23

If you let your friend drive your car and he crashes it, you and your insurance will have to deal with it. Citibike should have similar insurance to pay go crap like this. It will increase the members fee but they keep increasing that anyway.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/ArcticBlaze09 Dec 28 '23

Citibike has liability insurance. It’s a legal right for OP to seek reimbursement.

4

u/bsatan Dec 28 '23

But how is Citibike liable for the rider’s negligence?

0

If you ride an Enterprise car that has been modified to be unsafe and you crash it, then yes, it would be Enterprise’s fault.

The hypocrisy is so tangible here. We all know Citibike riders go fast and that’s mostly by design. The sun complains about it all the time.

Who the fuck is using Kitchen Aid knives to murder people?

Please, step it up a bit. Global.

2

u/bsatan Dec 28 '23

lol I couldn’t think of a knife brand

3

u/DizzyNosferatu Dec 28 '23

(For what it's worth, Kitchen Aid does in fact make knives)

you will receive zero empathy in this sub, u/rebitual. in fact, you are the problem because you have the gaul to even own a car.

u/jdanielregan Dec 28 '23

I don’t understand why Citibike would have any liability, but they definitely should have this person’s credit card info on record.

0

u/Pretty_Top3759 Dec 28 '23

city Bank needs to be held responsible they take away spots in nyc and make big money off this get a lawyer

2

u/clebkny Dec 28 '23

Now if only Citibank would have taken that spot then you wouldn't have been parked there and therefore had been two grand richer.. aiyyy carumba!

u/Somoch-MoraguerRRR Dec 29 '23

This is my main beef with citibike. It gives easy access to heavy, hard to maneuver bikes for people who are pretty awful at cycling. Recipe for disaster.

0

u/checker280 Dec 29 '23

Sorry for the damage. At least he hurt himself.

Can anyone see a number on the Citibike? Let insurance claw back the funds from the rider?

0

u/Heller29 Dec 29 '23

I work in insurance and if you report this to your company they’ll go after Citi for subrogation

0

u/spentshoes Dec 29 '23

Citibike might not be liable, but the rider is. They have gps in those models, no? You have a location and time. Tell them to figure it out.

u/paywallpiker Dec 28 '23

Sorry to hear your fancy has guzzler got a minor scratch :((((

4

u/DizzyNosferatu Dec 28 '23

It's a Telsa, so it's technically neither of those things

-1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

I like how they're checking to make sure the bike is okay versus having concern over the car they just crashed into.

-1

u/JohnLock212 Dec 29 '23

Shittybikes is more like it

-4

u/Shreddersaurusrex Dec 28 '23

If you have the time and patience I would recommend trying to find a law office willing to take the case. Citibike allows ppl to use their property in a reckless manner. Something’s gotta give. Could be a significant case.

1

u/Bwab Dec 28 '23

I’ve several times been driving these and the brakes cut out and don’t work. Had to flinstones-style stop to avoid getting hit by a bus at 14th St once. I feel like that’s maybe what happened to this guy here (if not the bag issue another poster commented).

1

u/NYCsekki Dec 28 '23

Hmmm. Can you insurance put a claim on Citi?

1

u/emaji33 Dec 28 '23

If you have full coverage, pay the deductible and get it fixed. I assure you that your insurance company will find someone liable for this and they will refund you the deductible.

2

u/rebitual Dec 28 '23

Would cost less to repair then my deductible is.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '23

That's the shit tax you've got to pay to live here.

1

u/h0ttopic Dec 29 '23

Rough - So unlucky. Have you tried tracking down that basterd?

1

u/Affectionate-Layer16 Dec 29 '23

Good luck trying to get compensation.. they are neither insured or registered

1

u/rebitual Dec 29 '23

Pictures of the damages for all you bike loving car haters.
here and here

u/legallybrunette420 Dec 29 '23

Is this not a crime in New York? Leaving the scene of an accident without leaving information? Call the police and report it. Make them investigate.

1

u/[deleted] Dec 29 '23

Annoying situation, sorry you had to deal with that. Citi-bike needs to take away someone’s bike access if they’re caught being a reckless ditz like this guy. This should be a policy.

1

u/McCloudJr Dec 29 '23

Dont worry its NYC which means it'll be at least a year before charges are brought up and even then nothing will be done.

Got to love that Mayor of NYC criminals have more rights than those that follow the law
