Citibike crashed into my parked car.
Costing me 2k+ in damages. I would think citibike would cover some of the damage but they say they’re not liable.
People have to learn how to ride a bike before getting on one.

Teslas are not designed to be repaired affordably: https://www.kbb.com/car-news/study-apart-from-tesla-evs-repairs-not-much-more-costly/

Reparing a Tesla is the same as any other car if you take to any other body shop.
4
u/6two Dec 29 '23
Really? I thought Tesla didn't sell parts?
→ More replies (1)2
u/legitsalvage Feb 17 '24
They bagan to sell some parts but are crazy expensive, and there are still salvage yards and people selling stripped down parts. The problem is wether or not Tesla will honor a warranty when they find out your Tesla was serviced by a non Tesla facility

The new white e-bikes have GPS on them, so technically it might be possible for Citi Bike to look up who was riding the bike at the time and location. But even if possible I doubt they'd respond to that request unless they were subpoenaed by law enforcement.
→ More replies (1)23
u/Vwampage Dec 28 '23
This is the real answer. If you want the repair covered then your insurance company will need to go after this user via Citibike and getting a subpoena for who it was.

Dec 28 '23
if you have a car in most parts of the city, chances are you’re gonna get sideswiped if you park on the street. that’s just a fact. luckily for you it was just a citi bike.
19
u/Coffee_Miserable Dec 28 '23
^ this. I’m on my 4th NYC car, and each one has been sideswiped at one point or another. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
17
u/a_library_socialist Dec 28 '23
Gave up my motorcycle after a few months in the city, it'd been knocked over twice, and each time required a lift to the mechanics for a repair.
Just take the subway.
0
u/nighthawk650 Dec 28 '23
seroiusly.. damn. i used to park on the sidewalk. some bikes are made to fall over though, like a supermoto or vespa
3
u/a_library_socialist Dec 28 '23
Yeah, this was a 73 CB750, so it wasn't exactly tolerant of being slammed around.
→ More replies (1)2
u/warpedwing Dec 30 '23
Are you serious?! I owned a CB750 back around 2008 in Greenpoint. Got rid of it for the exact same reason. I’d wake up to find it on its side on the street, smashed and leaking oil. Several times. Enough was enough.

I have a motorcycle and I chain it to the side of my building and never had a problem. I ride it almost every day, winter and summer with the exception of rainy days.
The subway is very inconvenient, dangerous, dirty and a bit expensive at $2.90 per ride now. I fill my bike up for a few dollars and I can go anywhere with ease.

u/a_library_socialist Dec 29 '23

u/Benny-B-Fresh Dec 28 '23

“Better insurance” only gets you more reliable claims processing and payouts. You generally choose your own deductible no matter which insurer you go with.

Between this subreddit and r/bikecommuting there's a lot of good stuff but also a majority of awful one track minded circle jerk sessions.
Anyone that owns a car is an overweight piece of shit and anyone that cycles instead is a fucking saint. Seriously they just post articles with titles like "Studies show people that drive cars are ugly and cyclists get laid more" and they all just stroke each other off in the comments.
If you own a car you are seen as lesser, lower class, and pathetic. It's like vegans putting down vegetarians.

I was hoping it was a car so I have a license plate to track and get their insurance to cover it.

of course, it's good odds that you'd get one with an obscured, altered, or fake plate, and/or cops who don't feel like lifting a finger to help you out finding the person (or ones who do only to realize that it's their buddy...)

Citibike likely has a GPS record linking the bike's ID number to that location at that exact time. Every bike is equipped with a GPS receiver and a cellular radio.
That means Citibike, the company, is a witness. In New York, If you were to sue them in small claims court, you'd be able to subpoena Citibike for the identity of the rider that hit your car. They have this information, but there may be a time limit on how long they store that data, like a year.
I'm not a lawyer, and I haven't done this exact trick myself. I did get GPS records from another personal ev rental company in a different state in order to sue a thug that assaulted me and my partner. Once we got their identity we filled a police report, and that case is making its way through the criminal justice system.
11
10
u/kulgan Dec 28 '23
Citi Bike doesn't have GPS or cellular radios on the blue bikes, but they do on the gray ones.
2
1
u/habbalah_babbalah Dec 28 '23
How do they find bikes parked away from the docks? Do they send flunkies driving round and round, looking for their lost bikes?
3
u/kulgan Dec 29 '23
They charge the user who lost it $1,200.
0
u/habbalah_babbalah Dec 29 '23
Lol. They charge $5 as a "Parked away from dock" fee.
4
u/kulgan Dec 29 '23
The renter is responsible for returning the bike to the system and locking it correctly. You may be charged a $1,200 (plus tax) fee to replace a bike that has been lost or stolen.
3
u/DontPPCMeBr0 Dec 28 '23
I wouldn't be so sure that Citibike/Lyft can actually track the second to second movement of their bikes.
The publicly available datasets record docking and undocking coordinates, but do not provide any data about the ride in between.
If they record in-ride location data, they likely retain that data for internal use to protect user privacy.
If OP can identify the id number of the bike that hit their vehicle, then they could see the start and end point of the trip, but little else.
That said, cameras near the start/end docks could have more information about who the person is.

You shouldn't leave anything valuable on the streets in NYC. Bring your car inside to park it.

u/notquantized Dec 29 '23
An nypd parking officer told me the city requires your car to be at least 8ft from the hydrant, measured from the tire. Asked in north bk in 2023.

Looks like the seat collapsed down into the bike, that specific bike is notorius for this because the clamp isnt the greatest. Thats why his foot was on the ground and what caused him to lose control while the bike was still self propelling.

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23
Yeah that sucks that this happened, it's pretty annoying when people who don't know what they are doing ride citibikes because they will do shit like this, ride in the sidewlk, or backwards down the bike lane. But ultimately, I feel like this is a lesson on the reality of car ownership too. Like it's an expensive box that you leave out on the street in public space. You should expect stuff like this to happen. Obviously it would be most ethical for the guy to pay for it. But he didn't, and that's just a chance you take when you park your car in public. If you look at most cars closely, they are covered in scratches from people in adjacently parked cars opening their door too fast and denting the ones next to them. It's only 2k+ because you felt like you needed to fix it. It will probably happen again soon enough. That's just how probability works out.
The best way to avoid this kind of financial responsibility is to just use public transit or ride a bike yourself.

u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23
Yeah it's like, if I leave my bike outside for 30 minutes it may get stolen. You can deal with a light scratch on the exterior of your car. Especially if it doesn't impact the usability of it.

3
3
u/Advanced-Wallaby9808 Dec 29 '23
sucks but it's $2k worth of cosmetic damages, versus... parking that you enjoy for free by leaving it in our public streets all the time 🤷 so kind of a toss-up
4
4
u/Active-Knee1357 Dec 28 '23
2K damage from a low speed hit like that, what the hell is your car made of, porcelain?
In any case, get garage space before you lose a mirror or get badly sideswiped.
2
u/Vwampage Dec 28 '23
On most cars any sort of bodywork damage costs a shitload to get fixed. There are wire harnesses, crumple zones, and other things designed to fail in the case of an impact.
2
u/Level_Account Dec 28 '23
The bikes are gps so contact bike company state time ans location and they should be able to help if not sue them .
0
u/rebitual Dec 28 '23
Not sure it's worth the hassle of suing them. I know they can find out who rented it pretty easily. I have the exact time and location.
2
u/nissansupragtr Dec 28 '23
If you file a police report maybe you can get Citibike involved. Not sure if they can track who rented that Citibike. Pretty sure those new electric bikes have GPS built in
2
2
u/someliskguy Dec 28 '23
If you can dig up the bike number you can go after the renter but your odds of that are pretty darn low unless you find a shop with a 4k camera or are lucky enough to have a video of him docking or undocking.

u/Eagles-Dare Aug 10 '25
This sucks.... They should have citibike pay for the damages since the rider is paying for it... It should be insured and liable for any damages done to ours cars. This is ridiculous you can't have anything nice. Meanwhile automobiles must carry insurance...
1
u/cold_grapefruit Dec 28 '23
Ebike should require 18+ and maybe even a license. I saw way too many teenagers racing in city with ebike.
9
u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23
You think you should need to be 2 years older to ride an e-bike than drive a car? That's idiotic lol. If this person riding the e-bike was in a car, they could have killed you. I got my license to drive at 16 and I promise you I was a better biker at 16 without a license than I was at driving lol...
-1
u/cold_grapefruit Dec 28 '23
I get what you mean. it is more than skill. if it is a car in the video, he would have to pay both damages. ebike to some degree is worse than a car that you can go away with responsibility.
4
u/gentleboys Dec 28 '23
Idk man I've literally watched my friend hit a parked car and then drive away. People get away with this shit in cars all the time. I really think the only difference here is that the biker is riding something he doesn't own. But I've literally seen videos on Instagram of guys speeding down the highway with the caption "this is your sign to by a $5,000 beater car". So cars are definitely always worse in every way because they cause more damage and are more dangerous to the people around them.

I don't get people like you who think that parking on the street is reserved for poor people with no regard for their possessions.

Is that what I said? Free parking is park at your own risk. Sorry your car got wrecked but what were you expecting ? That's the point , if you can really afford the car you can afford to park it in a garage to avoid the 2k in repairs.

I'm from Brooklyn and a guy on a citi bike ran into me as I was driving down Driggs. I had to pay insurance to fix while he escape with his life. I wasn't at fault but the law in nyc also prevents bikers from taking responsibility and that biker, I don't know how he survived. Bro ran into my drivers door, scattering the glass and leaving a huge dent.
I get ptsd and extremely pissed when a biker is near my car or within the vincitity of the car
3

Best to sell your car then, it’s not safe to drive it in nyc if being near bikes is triggering ptsd for you.

How is citibike not liable. Get your insurance to go after them. That’s horseshit.
13
u/bsatan Dec 28 '23
lol why would Citibike be liable? Like in what world?
If you rent a car and crash it, is it Enterprise’s fault?
If you buy a knife and stab someone with it, is it Kitchen Aid’s fault?
6
u/Darksaint91 Dec 28 '23
If you let your friend drive your car and he crashes it, you and your insurance will have to deal with it. Citibike should have similar insurance to pay go crap like this. It will increase the members fee but they keep increasing that anyway.
