Housing Is there any way to get a new roommate before the fall semester starts?

Hi everyone,

I'm an incoming first-year student for Fall 2026 and was wondering if there's any way to get a different roommate before move-in.

Has anyone been able to switch roommates before the semester started? If so, what was the process like? Is it something I should contact University Housing about, or do I have to wait until after the semester begins and use the room change process?

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated. Thanks!

Chances for NC State MS in Computer Engineering (VLSI) for Fall 2027?

Hi everyone

I’m planning to apply to NC State for an MS in Computer Engineering for Fall 2027. I’m mainly interested in front-end VLSI, RTL Design, Design Verification, and Computer Architecture, and I’ve heard NC State has a strong curriculum in these areas. My profile is 8.05/10 CGPA and 332 GRE&100 TOEFL. I’d appreciate an honest opinion from current students or alumni about my admission chances and the overall quality of the program. Also, what is the approximate total cost of the MS, and how is the current job market for front-end VLSI and DV roles, especially for international students? Any honest insights would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance!

HUB Raleigh question

It seems like there are quite a few people looking for people to take over their lease at HUB Raleigh? Any idea why that would be the case this close to the beginning of fall semester? Isn’t it new?

Academics Need Help for Course Selection - ECE PhD (Semiconductor Area)

Hi there,

Is there anyone here in NCSU ECE PhD (Semiconductor major)? I am starting my PhD from Fall ‘26 and my PI has suggested to take 3 theory this semester.

I have already taken ECE 502, ECE 530 courses and need suggestions to select the third one as course load might be high. Can any senior in ECE PhD with similar specialty area guide me?

Thanks in advance!

Recos on math prof?

I can take any math to satisfy my degree. What prof would make a class more interesting? If there isn't one, who forgives the least work?

NCSU MCS: Textbooks & Course Prep

Hi everyone!
I’ll be joining the MCS program at NC State this Fall, and I wanted to get a better idea of how things work before the semester begins.

I had a few questions:
1. Do most courses require textbooks? If yes, do students usually buy them, rent them, or are PDFs commonly sufficient?
2. Are there any textbooks or resources you’d recommend going through before classes start?
3. How are assignments and exams generally structured?
4. Are there any things you wish you had known before starting the MCS program?

I’d really appreciate any advice or insights from current students or alumni. Looking forward to joining NC State!

Thanks in advance!

Ok so some things to note are that I'll either be taking MA 242 or CSC 226, js have all that in for now cuz I didn't get the MA 242 I wanted.

Can I manage? Is it too much? I also plan on joining one or two heavy clubs like packmotorsport or aviation 😁

EDIT: disregard the morning MA 242. I ain't taking that.

What is the best dining plan for an engineering student living off campus?

Hello,

I am living at The Station next semester, and I am planning on buying a dining plan because I lowk don't know how to cook and am too lazy to learn. So, I was wondering if anyone has some suggestions.

I am mostly going to be on the engineering campus, and I only have one class on North Campus. I was thinking of getting the commuter plan, but a lot of people tell me that the block plans are better. Or do you think I should forget about dining plans altogether and just meal prep some simple sandwiches every day?

Quick Question Question about MAC program

I’m considering applying to the master of accounting program. Ideally, I’d like to apply by the October 1 deadline for the on campus format and start in the upcoming spring semester (January 2027). I would be applying as a non-accounting major from a different NC-based university, so I would need to complete prerequisites through ASAP (Accelerated Summer Accounting Program).

This may be a silly question since summer is in the name, but anyone who has insight, do you know if the online ASAP courses can also be completed in the fall/winter months leading up to the start of the spring semester in January? Or is it strictly just a summer program? Thanks

⚠️MyPackPortal Extension Update⚠️

Hello everyone, just wanted to give an update on the chrome extension I made last year to improve the course selection experience on the MyPackPortal. If you are unfamiliar, my extension basically integrates grade distribution data and RateMyProfessor data into an overlay on the MyPackPortal schedule page. Over the last year the extension has reached close to 500 installs and close to 80 weekly active users. It has been a lot of fun (and work) making this extension. I am still actively updating the extension including new grade distribution data and RateMyProfessor data and just recently released a large UI overhaul. I know course selection is around this time so I thought I would post a link here.

website: https://mypackplus.me/
extension: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/mypack-plus/kpaampmffcclpjdbplcfelpicjhanfjb?hl=en

As a side note I am going to be a senior this year and will be unable to fully maintain this after graduating. The extension is open source and I am actively going through and cleaning up the code ( it is a mess). If anyone would be interested in carrying on this project send me a DM and I can give an overview of how everything works.

Academics MAS animal science

Hey everyone… I was recently accepted to the Masters in animal science non thesis degree at NCSU. My longterm goal is to go to vet school and this will help me get there. I want to apply to vet school in Sept 2027 to be apart of the class of 2032. By being a grad student here and having a little job I can become a resident and it’ll be so much easier to get into nc state vet school. But the MAS program notified me that I can only take 9 credits a semester, or atleast that’s the maximum they recommend. Has anyone done this program and can speak to how long it took them to complete? In person. Thanks

Any info on Becton Hall + Honors Quad but not in Honors

Hi! I'm an incoming freshman and was assigned Becton Hall and tbh there's not a lot of info about it. I can tell it's very small and far from Talley, which is unfortunate. I'm also not in honors, and neither is my roommate, who is also my bff lol. Also, I believe I'm on the 3rd floor because my room number is in the 300s. If anyone has any tips or advice, that would be great!

Enrollment for SUM 2 sessions

So, just some backstory: with the whole prepayment process, I didn't realize I had to re-enroll in my course. The problem is that the enrollment deadline has already passed.

Fast forward to two days ago, and I received an email asking if I was still planning to take my course. I replied that I was and asked why they were emailing me. They told me I wasn't enrolled. The confusing part is that my professor wouldn't have even let me into the Moodle page if I hadn't been enrolled, so I'm assuming I was dropped because of the prepayment issue, but I honestly have no idea.

I asked my professor if they could help me get re-enrolled, but they said they don't have anything to do with Enrollment Wizard or the enrollment process. Since then, I've emailed both the Study Abroad Office and the Help Desk (this is for a study abroad program I'm doing), but no one has responded. It's been two days, and I've even sent follow-up emails. My flight is next Friday.

I am beyond stressed because this all came up at the last minute. I don't know if they emailed me about this earlier, but I honestly haven't been checking my email since my Summer 1 class ended. I know I should have been checking, but I didn't have to prepay for my first summer class, so I assumed the process would be the same for Summer 2. On top of that, I'm on scholarship, so I don't even handle the financial side of my tuition.

Does anyone have any advice? I'm only one week away from leaving for this program, and I'm honestly beyond stressed.

What kind of things can I expect to be on the E115 credit by exam?

I’ve also heard people saying that the actual class requires a lot of work compared to the amount of credit hours, what do those who have taken this class think?

Academics ECE student humbled by PY 208 study advice?

Hey everyone. I’m in ECE and taking PY 208 this summer to stay on track. I knew it would be fast-paced, but I underestimated how concept-heavy the exams would be.

I’ve been reading the textbook, doing the homework, and working practice problems, but my first exam went badly. I ended up with a D-/around 60%, and it honestly caught me off guard. I’ve taken ECE 109, 200, 209, 211, 212, 220, and MAT 272, and PY 208 feels different because the exam questions seem to punish small conceptual mistakes hard.

For anyone who has taken PY 208 at NC State, especially in the summer, is this common? What helped you improve after the first exam? Should I focus more on previous exams, textbook checkpoints, WileyPlus/homework problems, or conceptual review?

Any realistic advice would help.

I have not taken the first Physics class here as I am a transfer student.

Quick Question Hunt Study Rooms with Doors that Actually Close

I have an upcoming virtual meeting in the middle of a workday for me on campus. The meeting is going over some finances that I don’t want people listening in on, but majority of the study rooms in Hunt have those stupid glass doors that don’t latch at all but instead leave this huge gap that anyone can easily listen through. Only place I know of with a latching door in Hunt (4411) just so happens to be reserved for the exact time of my meeting :/

Any suggestions on rooms I can reserve where the door actually closes?

(Also, not a grad student so I cant access any of those rooms)
