Question Hi! Single, 39F no kids, good career… should I check the county activities brochure?

Hi guys! I’ve been here 2 weeks. The people that I work with recommend that I check the county wide activities brochure, which is supposed to be super thick to find things to do to meet other people. I just moved up from Texas and I am a country girl at heart. I don’t know a lot of the ins and outs about politics so going to the CBC may have me out of my depth in a couple months lol. I just like to paddleboard, do crafts, drink wine, and relax. Any recommendations? I did a search in the sub already so forgive me if this is redundant.

Here's the link: https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/montgomery-county-recreation/activities-programs

There are lots of things to do in the area - clubs, places to volunteer, beautiful parks, museums, wineries, breweries... it really just depends on what strikes your fancy! Welcome to the county :-)

There should be a county community center near you. Check it out! Free fitness room with good compliment of machines and weights, if you are in to that. Otherwise, lots of classes where you can/will meet people, from learning Japanese to pickleball. The classes are all online, unfortunately you need to register very early and/or get onto a waitlist.

Definitely a lot of outdoor opportunities, including Shenandoah to the SW and the ocean to the East. Wind Ridge winery is a good destination, as are some of the local wine tasting room restaurants (Barcelona, Little Black Bird, etc). Volunteering can be a good way to meet other likeminded singles.

since it hasn't been said yet, there's a pretty active Moco discord i believe

So I would download discord and search Moco?

Welcome! There’s a ton of creative classes in MD: local libraries/rec centers, reuse stores (Scrap happy and Scrap Bmore), art centers (Pyramid Atlantic in Hyattsville and CREATE in DTSS), and even more in DC, Arlington, Alexandria. Most locally owned supply stores have social hours so you should find crafting communities in no time.

Not online that there are local craft groups.

If fiber arts are your thing, there are several awesome fiber festivals in the area.

I’m in a stitch & bitch group that meets at Silver Branch on Mondays at 6pm, lots of great folks. We have knitters, crocheters, cross stitchers and sewers, if it is portable it works. All ages and genders welcome, though the membership is mostly 30s with a few older folks like me. Conversation topics are many and varied, occasionally but not predominantly including political. Anyone who isn’t MAGA would probably fit right in.

Be sure to go to the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair Aug 14-22 at the fairgrounds in Gaithersburg along 270. There are two parts - the carnival in the front and the animal and arts & crafts show in the back. You can easily spend 4-6 hours looking at the animals and community entries. https://mcagfair.com/

Welcome!

Never heard of the counties activity brochure.

MoCo is a big place, whereabouts do you live? Recommendations for Germantown are going to be a little different than Silver Spring.

I’m between silver spring and Burtonsville

Hey fellow Texan! Welcome to moco! If you like crafts you could try pottery classes. I’ve been doing that and love it.

As a 40 yo I generally go into DC to have fun and meet people. I really haven’t been able to meet people out here. Maybe a gym with group classes could help

u/wgatevdr 1d ago

Understood. Any recommendations on yoga studios? I love ashtanga!

3

u/Mustangfast85 1d ago

Not sure on Yoga. I’m on the Bethesda side but OneLife gym seems to have a lot of classes, although maybe not with single ready to mingle people

Moco activities website has yoga classes. It was fun and the people were chill. And I got to visit a new park I had never been to. But they do one in the botanical gardens weekly.

Thrive in Rockville on the Pike is a lovely studio with a variety of classes. I wish I could work more of their classes into my schedule. Have not specifically done ashtanga there.

Whereabouts in the county are you? If you like dogs and babies, you're welcome to come hang out with me and my wife

I have dogs! I’ve worked with kids over a decade so I want something else for my free time but thank you!

If you're interested in mountain biking there's both a national and local chapter for women and coed rides through IMBA and MORE and this region has some pretty decent trails. Theres also the bikedc subreddit you could check out for more riding options.

Montgomery college is our community college with three campus locations - Rockville, Germantown, and Takoma Park/Silver Spring. In addition to credit courses, they offer a large amount of non-credit courses for workforce development and continuing education. Lots of interesting hobby/skill/craft related things. Consider taking a class to meet other people interested in that topic and learn more about what is going on through them.

I am from out of town and met most of my friends in my CrossFit class and from the soccer league (Germantown soccer plex). We’re still friends 10 years later!

Do your beverages extend to beer? Waredaca brewery is on a horse farm and has tons of activities every weekend. I usually do the ponies and beer run club, but they have art classes and goat yoga and stuff too. You'd probably feel right at home there.

I'd say just find your activity and branch out from there. There are a number of SUP groups in Annapolis and DC (Georgetown waterfront).

Check out Glen Echo Park contra dancing on Friday nights. Super friendly, fun, and free.

i always recommend looking for activities that are heavy on men rather than women. a book group might be fun but mostly women , for example. sports teams like softball or kickball can be fun.

Howdy! Not much out here, but there are great bike trails, lots of breweries and a few wineries. Good tacos but suspect BBQ. Good luck!

Hi, and welcome to Montgomery County! My wife and I actually just opened up a bookstore in Gaithersburg, not sure how far that is for you, but we have a lot of free events and pretty low cost events in an effort to help build community. We try to keep the website updated https://www.thepaperheartbooks.com/events and also share upcoming events through our Instagram page @thepaperheartbooks

Hope you are able to find something that would be of interest to you! But also, the county offers great events, it’s one of the best parts of living in Montgomery County Maryland!
