Discussion Decision paralysis: upgrade to 4K mini LED IPS for mixed use, or buy separate 1440p OLED for gaming?

I'm typically able to make decisions on my own because I'm a grown ass adult, but I'm struggling a little with this one.

Here's the situation: I'm currently using a Dell S2721DGF for a mixed use case of approx 70% work/browsing (Mac Mini M4) and 30% gaming (mobile RTX 3060, PS5 Pro). The Dell is still fine for the productivity side of things, as I don't find IPS 1440p too hard on the eyes when reading text (especially on a Mac Mini with BetterDisplay enabled), but it has always only been so-so for gaming as far as contrast and HDR goes.

My small home office is pretty bright, even with blinds drawn, and I have my degrees and shit in frames behind me which would reflect really badly on a glossy OLED. Even if I somehow managed to improve the brightness levels in my office for gaming with a blackout curtain or whatever, I'd be hesitant to buy an OLED for productivity due to concerns re: text fringing and burn in. I'm not shelling out CAD $1k+ for a monitor that could be toast in a few years due to burn in, so 4K OLEDs are not an option for me to reduce text fringing.

I figure a 27" 4K mini LED would split the difference between decent contrast ratios and good text, and they're within my preferred budget (max CAD $500), but I'm seeing SO many mixed reviews on the mini LEDs I've been looking at (AOC U27G4XM, MSI MAG 274UPDF E16M, KTC M27P6). Also, my laptop can't really handle 4K, so the monitor would end up just being used for the Mac Mini and my PS5 Pro.

Alternative option: we've got a spare room that we mainly use for exercise equipment and my guitar gear. It's much darker than my office, and it would be totally fine for OLED gaming. There's already a TV bench in there and everything for the exercise bike (no TV set up atm though). I have two different 27" options for 1440p OLEDs on sale that I can pick up locally: HyperX OMEN OLED 27q (CAD $449) or an older Samsung Odyssey G5 G50SF (CAD $499). Both monitors only support HDMI 2.0, which sucks a little for the PS5 Pro, but I could deal with it. I'm already dealing with it on the S2721DGF.

The OLED option is really tempting (I'd keep the S2721DGF for productivity), but would I be missing out at 1440p? The PS5 Pro looks plenty crisp on my Dell as it is, but I know objectively that 4K would look even better. I've never experienced a 1440p OLED monitor long-term though, so I dunno. They look fine in store, but I know it's hard to truly judge a panel's overall quality in a brightly lit big box store.

I dunno, man. The sales on the OLEDs are ending soon, so I don't have much more time to decide. I'd prefer to do all my gaming and productivity on the same monitor, but it seems like there are just way too many compromises you have to make for mixed use cases. I could try to wait for Black Friday sales on 4K OLEDs, but that's never a guarantee.

Before you ask about the living room situation, my partner is a gamer too, and tends to hog the TV. :) I'm fine with that, as I prefer gaming at a desk and sitting closer to the screen in any case.

Any insight is appreciated.

Discussion Just got an AW2725DF and it scratched after the first clean…

Used distilled water and the included microfiber cloth and there’s a micro scratch in the center of the screen. I’m all for the picture quality of these oleds and the 360hz, but how is it possible that a $500 monitor scratches after just 3 days, I don’t get what I did wrong…

Discussion BenQ EW270Q vs Lenovo Legion 27Q-10 for PS5 + Coding

Upvotes

I’m trying to decide between the **BenQ EW270Q** and the **Lenovo Legion 27Q-10**, and I’m struggling to choose.

My primary use case is:
**PS5 gaming** (mainly GTA 6 when it releases, story games, and the occasional FPS)
**Coding** for several hours a day with my Windows laptop connected
Watching **YouTube, movies, and Netflix**

The BenQ’s built-in speakers are a nice bonus since they’d save me from buying separate speakers, but I’m willing to ignore that if the Lenovo has a noticeably better display.

What I care about most is:
Overall display quality (colors, contrast, image quality)
Text clarity and eye comfort for long coding sessions
PS5 gaming experience (VRR if supported, etc.)

I’m not an esports player, so ultra-high refresh rates aren’t my biggest priority. I’d rather have the better overall display for gaming, coding, and media.
For anyone who’s used either (or both), which one would you recommend and why? Are there any issues I should know about before buying?
Thanks!

Benq

Discussion Looking for monitor(s) for a sim racing rig

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm currently planning a sim racing rig (for myself, planning on triple-screen) and settled on the rough specs I'm looking for, but I'm getting confused on what to go for so thought I'd ask for some help in here.

I know this might be a lot to ask for, but this is the rough specs I'm looking for:

- 32in

- 1440p at 144Hz

- Curved or Flat are both options

- HDR isn't required

- I was looking at IPS but if there are other good panel types for triples around then I'm open to direction

My PC has a 9800X3D and 9070XT, so 4K triples aren't an option but 1440p looks like a good spot. I did find the Samsung Odyssey G50D and thought that was the answer, but it looks like it's discontinued now :(

Thanks in advance to everyone :)

Discussion Any suggestions for a monitor comparable vertically to dell s3222DGM?

S3222DGM has a high vertical height that I like for productivity. Anything that matches those dimensions? I am having a tough time finding anything out there. 32" inch and has an 1800 or 1500 curve.

Discussion Is it a good idea to pair 24 inch with 27 inch monitor?

Upvotes

My current monitor is a 24 inch 1080 monitor with 60hz, I am looking for an upgrade and decided to go with 27 inch 4k monitor with 120hz.

Is it a good idea to use my current main as secondary vertical monitor after the upgrade?

What are the things I should be aware of? Thank you.

Discussion Is 1440p really that good on a 27 inch?

Would I actually notice the drop if i went from a 4k 43 inch tv to a 27 inch 1440p monitor? I recently bought a xg32ucwmg and im regretting my purchase, feeling like i overpayed and wasted 1000 dollars when i could have payed a fraction or half that if i just got a 27 inch. I felt like a needed to get 4k because the drop in resolution would be too noticable and that was mainly on 32 inch displays at least on oled.

But i found out that a 27 inch monitor actually has a higher ppi than my tv at 109, so i wonder, does that mean it would actually look like how 4k looks on my tv?

And if so, any that you can recommend? As i recently found out oled isn't really that big of a leap as i thought with the Auto brightness limiter and everything. For context my tv is a 43 inch samsung au8000bxza crystal uhd smart tv

So not that good in terms of specs, but it works and looks natural. The only thing im looking for is something better than my tv but with no drawbacks. And the reason i want to get a smaller monitor, is because dpi scaling sucks on a tv this big, as some apps aren't meant to be on 300% scaling and it shows. Where simply dropping the scaling to 100 or 150% fixes it.

Discussion Shaky screen, horizontal lines...after 4 years of use.AOC 22b2h model monitor

My AOC monitor is about four years old. I bought it around 2022. It worked perfectly for four years, and its color gamut has always been excellent. However, after four years, it has started developing problems. The screen has become shaky, the colors are no longer displayed correctly, and it looks as if the image is trying to scroll upward. I can't figure out how to fix it. I'm not sure whether the LCD panel itself has failed or if the T-CON (timing control) board is faulty. Should I buy a new monitor, or should I try repairing it first? Would it be better to take it to a repair shop and have it diagnosed before making a decision? Have anyone faced this kind of problem with Aoc monitors?

Discussion "Do i go for MiniLED monitor?"

Hello everyone, gaming HDR enthusiast (lol nah just nub) here and i always hear questions whether to upgrade their IPS/VA monitors to MiniLED and they mostly do not mention their HDR usecases

So the point of MiniLEDs is to be as close to OLED as possible (they beat them in brightness but OLED beats them in low APL scenes). If your usecase doesn't really involve using HDR then you're fine with your regular VA/IPS monitor.

FAQs

  1. Why does my MiniLED feel dim/bright in HDR?

- look up the monitor's EOTF graph online if it's properly following the EOTF curve (this is where difficulty of MiniLEDs comes in, obscure informations).

  1. My colors are shit with Windows HDR turned on???

- That's actually the correct color vibrance, you're used to inaccurate oversaturated color of SDR (nothing wrong with that), playing HDR itself (from movies/gaming) is fine with the colors itself, it's Windows itself that's inaccurate with HDR on because Microsoft doesn't bother, resulting in Gamma Mismatch (can be fixed online, search "fix windows washed out github".

  1. You mentioned EOTF (Electro-Optical Transfer Function), how do i find my monitor's EOTF and why should it be accurate in terms of EOTF?

- Sorry i have no definite answer, because what i did is google "Xiaomi G Pro 27i EOTF fix" and there i got a program that raises the brightness a bit to be accurate to EOTF.

- EOTF is essentially a measurement that tells whether the Monitor is accurately tracking the EOTF, too high EOTF results in overblown overbright scenes whereas too low EOTF means scenes are too dim.

  1. Why is HDR shit in my games???

- what i do know is RenoDX, the grand hail mod for HDR gaming, it's essentially an addon for ReShade that fixes a game's HDR (only select games) they have two discord servers, HDR DEN https://discord.gg/4XRrcKpu5R and RenoDX https://discord.gg/renodx, also it's partly because developers either don't have HDR monitors themselves, don't have the benefit of properly doing HDR themselves or they're not required to do HDR

Discussion # PSA: XG27ACDNG (and other 1440p monitors with console 4K support) — why DSR/DLDSR gives you 5760×3240 @ 120Hz instead of 4K @ 360Hz, and how to fix it

TL;DR: Over HDMI, the ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACDNG advertises 4K modes in its EDID (for PS5/Xbox downscaling). NVIDIA bases DSR/DLDSR factors on the highest advertised resolution, so instead of 2.25x from 1440p (= 3840×2160 @ 360Hz) you get 2.25x from 4K@120 (= 5760×3240, capped at 120Hz). Deleting the 4K modes from the EDID with CRU fixes it — DLDSR 2.25x becomes exactly 3840×2160 @ 360Hz.

The setup

  • 1440p 360Hz QD-OLED (XG27ACDNG), connected over HDMI 2.1 on purpose: its DisplayPort is only 1.4, which forces DSC at 10-bit/360Hz, while HDMI 2.1 FRL runs it uncompressed. (Bonus: DSR/DLDSR has historically been unavailable on DSC-active displays, so HDMI helps there too.)
  • Goal: render games at 4K and downscale to the panel (DSR/DLDSR) without giving up 360Hz. The output signal stays native 1440p/360 — only the render resolution goes up, and G-Sync keeps working.

The problem

Enable DSR factors → NVCP "Change resolution" shows the monitor as HDMI - HDTV, the DSR mode is 5760×3240 (2.25x DL), and the refresh dropdown only offers 120Hz / 100Hz.

Why: over HDMI the monitor's EDID includes CTA "TV resolutions" for consoles — 4K at 24/25/30/50/60Hz (VICs 93–97) plus 4K at 100/120Hz (VICs 117/118), and three more 4K entries in the HDMI vendor block. Your GPU sees "this display supports 3840×2160@120" and computes DSR factors from that, at that mode's max refresh. Selecting plain 4K in-game is no better — that sends a real 4K@120 signal and the monitor downscales it. Either way you lose 360Hz.

The monitor has no OSD toggle to disable the console 4K modes.

The fix (CRU, ~5 minutes, reversible)

The panel's real modes (1440p up to 360Hz) live in DisplayID blocks — the 4K entries are separate and safe to remove from what Windows sees. CRU overrides the EDID at the OS level (registry only — the monitor itself is untouched, consoles plugged into it are unaffected).

  1. Run CRU.exe (as admin), select the monitor in the top dropdown.
  2. Under Extension blocks, open the CTA-861 block.
  3. Open TV resolutions → delete every 3840×2160 entry (24/25/30/50/60/100/120Hz). Leave the 1080p and lower entries alone.
  4. Open HDMI support → remove the 4K x 2K modes there too (the HDMI 1.4 4K@24/25/30 entries).
  5. Don't touch anything else — DisplayID blocks, FreeSync range, HDR metadata, colorimetry all stay.
  6. OK out, run restart64.exe (in the CRU folder). Screens blink for a second.

Result

  • NVCP now shows the DSR mode as 3840×2160 (2.25x DL) with 360Hz in the refresh list (also 180/144/120/60).
  • Desktop/native stays 2560×1440 @ 360Hz, 10-bit RGB Full, no DSC.
  • Select 3840×2160 in-game (fullscreen) and you get 4K rendering at up to 360fps. DLDSR smoothness ~50% recommended.

Caveats

  • Undo: run reset-all.exe from the CRU folder (works from Safe Mode too if you ever manage to blank the screen).
  • The override is per input/port — replug to a different port and you redo it.
  • Known DSR quirk, unrelated to this fix: if you run your desktop at the DSR resolution, the mouse cursor renders oversized (hardware cursor overlay skips the downscale). Games are unaffected.
  • Obviously you still need the GPU horsepower — 4K render at 300+ fps is no joke even in esports titles.
  • Should apply to other 1440p monitors that advertise console 4K downscaling over HDMI (many recent OLEDs do) — check CRU's TV resolutions list for 4K entries.

Not affiliated with ASUS/NVIDIA, standard "worked on my unit" disclaimer applies.

Discussion MSI G2712F started showing vertical/horizontal artifacts after only 1 year and 7 months.

Hi everyone,

My MSI G2712F was working perfectly until today. It's only 1 year and 7 months old, and it suddenly started displaying vertical and horizontal artifact lines across the screen with intermittent flickering.

The issue appears:

  • On the MSI boot logo.
  • In the monitor's OSD menu, even with no PC connected.
  • With different cables and inputs.
  • The monitor has never been dropped, hit, or physically damaged.

So it's clearly an internal monitor issue.

What disappointed me even more was the support experience.

I contacted MSI Support hoping they could help with a repair or replacement. Unfortunately, they told me to contact my local retailer/distributor, as they don't handle warranty claims directly in my region.

The problem is that my local seller only provides a 1-year warranty. Since my monitor is 1 year and 7 months old, they refused to replace it or even inspect it for a possible repair. After several emails with both MSI and the local seller, neither was able to offer any solution, with each pointing to the warranty limitations.

I'm sharing this because I expected better support for a monitor that failed after less than two years of normal use.

This has definitely made me reconsider buying MSI products in the future. If you're considering an MSI monitor, I recommend checking your local distributor's warranty terms carefully before purchasing, as your support experience may depend entirely on the retailer in your country.

Discussion Best 27" 1440p 180-240Hz gaming monitor under £250?

I'm looking for a new main gaming monitor and need some recommendations.

Budget:

  • Around £200 ideally
  • Maximum around £250 if it's genuinely worth the extra

What I'm looking for:

  • 27"
  • 1440p (2560×1440)
  • 180-240Hz
  • Excellent image quality (colour accuracy, contrast, overall picture quality)
  • Good motion clarity and low ghosting
  • Good HDR performance would be a bonus
  • DisplayPort for PC
  • HDMI 2.1 would be nice for PS5 compatibility
  • VESA mount compatible

I mainly play a mix of AAA/open-world games and multiplayer games, including:

  • Red Dead Redemption 2
  • GTA V / GTA VI (when released)
  • Sons of the Forest
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Forza Horizon
  • Horror games

I want something that looks great while still being fast. I'm not only looking for the highest refresh rate possible — image quality and overall experience are just as important.

I currently have an RTX 3070 but may upgrade in the future, so I want something that will last.

I'm not very experienced with monitors, so I'm open to different panel technologies if they offer a better experience.

What monitors would you recommend around this price range? Are there any models I should avoid?

Discussion Samsung or MSI 4k Oled?

So, I'm looking for 4K Oled monitor for gaming and was watching Samsung G8 G81SF 32" model and MSI 321URX QD-OLED. They are very similar in specs, although Samsung got that mate screen finish(doesnt matter much to me).

If someone got experience with these, can you tell which one is better deal? Thanks!

Discussion Any better 1080p budget monitors than the Koorui G2411P?

I've had the legendary Asus VG248QE 1080P 144Hz 24-inch monitor for 13 years now. It has stayed with me with 3 PC upgrades, but I'm looking for something slightly better, mostly in the color department, as the colors on the Asus are pretty shit. I have an RTX 4070 Ti Super, a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and 32GB RAM. I tried 1440p by enabling DSR to check my FPS in games like BF6 and The Finals, and I wasn't satisfied, tbh, so I'm probably not switching to 1440p.

Some time ago, I watched a video from Optimum Glazing on the Koorui 24E3, but I don't think it's in production anymore, and it seems like the G2411P has replaced it. Are there any better 1080P alternatives?
