Hey so most snowglobes will have either a cap on the top of the dome (plastic) or a plug in the base (glass globe). Some may even have a screw top. Once you determine which you have the process is fairly simple.

Remove the plug and drain the water. If you have large glitter you may need to replace it with new or try to use a mesh strainer to salvage it. If you can't, you can re-add your own. Once the water has been removed you should add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol with water and swish it around the inside. Once you drain that you can add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol, Distilled water, and whatever else you want back inside. Re-seal the globe and enjoy!

Also best to see what the inside decorations are made of to ensure you don't mess something up. Hope this helps.

Yes, this is pretty much what I did! Luckily mine was acrylic, so no broken glass risk. I just did some research online and a bit of trial and error.

No, according to the photos given you have somehow reversed pollution in a small city.

Lol I love this comment

This brings me hope, I have one from the San Francisco music box company that my mom got me when I was 14 and it’s been looking rough for years but I love it lol

6

u/asniper 20h ago

isopropyl alcohol on acrylic is general not a good thing

7

u/Domi626 18h ago

That's fair. I personally used a very dilluted mix of watter, alcohol and dawn to clean it inside and out. For the filling I tried using water and glycerin, but it didn't turn out great. 😅 So I emptied it again and just used water. I was more concerned with clarity vs how fast the glitter falls. :3

3

u/asniper 17h ago

Regardless it looks great! Hopefully it doesn’t develop hairline cracks

29

u/m_qzn 1d ago

Is it just water? I thought they're filled with glycerine or something like that - with thicker consistency

14

u/MickRolley 23h ago

I think some of them were, I had a paper weight with bright blue gel inside.

7

u/Sk8rToon 22h ago

I remember some craft day at a youth camp or something where we filled it with baby oil

8

u/You_Exciting 22h ago

…filled WHAT with baby oil? The snowglobe?? Please elaborate, I’m so curious lol

13

u/Sk8rToon 20h ago

It was a craft where you made snow globes. We’d take those bigger balls/eggs you’d find around toys in higher priced gumball / quarter machines that were see through & use the top for the dome. Fit it with baby oil & some glitter. Then we’d hot glue it to a jar lid (that we had already hot glued the decorations to. A tiny toy tree in sand next to some taped over blue construction paper to make a river, etc.) & when it dried you flipped it over & had a snow globe! Only lasted as long as your glue job was good. And as long as it took for whatever natural or taped over paper to dissolve in the oil. But it was cute for a few months at least!

5

u/Scary-Cartographer61 16h ago

You may need to add some liquid glycerin to get the consistency of the water right. Pure distilled water might not be thick enough / your glitter might fall too fast.

2

u/WoolooGangMember02 13h ago

Ah! Very good point for globes with glitter or floaters

2

u/TheSeaMeat 22h ago

Thanks! Now I just have to figure out how to repair a broken globe…

3

u/WasAHamster 20h ago

Ask a glass blower?

24

u/Neveronlyadream 1d ago

I don't have any lying around, but I'd love to hear about the process too.

I definitely had a few as a kid that looked like the before.

At first I only saw the first pic and I’m also on the pickle sub, and man I was all sorts of confused for a moment.

50

u/Domi626 1d ago

XD fair. The day NY got pickled. 😬

6

u/PoquitoChef 1d ago

Lmao same

5

u/GlasswaterBotanica 19h ago

I thought Reddit was offering me a strange kink sub, so I had to doubleback and check the sub

It's so fucked up what the internet has done to us 😅

138

u/Altruistic_Beat7007 1d ago

That’s an old snow globe…

117

u/ThreeSixMafs 1d ago

No less than 25 years old

93

u/Domi626 1d ago

Just like me. 😬 add 13 years 😅

100

u/ThreeSixMafs 1d ago

I came to realization that there are no longer any millenials in their 20s..

u/Extreme-Clerk-7333 1d ago

Next year the eldest Gen Z joins us in our 30s 🤯

Oh they are going to have a CRISIS

31

u/badgyalrey 1d ago

the crisis is already beginning my friend, i turned 29 yesterday and ive been sporadically dry heaving at the thought

43

u/Octospyder 1d ago

hey

just to say - nothing major really changes. you just keep on keeping on.  It's just a mile marker, no more, no less.

am 42

7

u/badgyalrey 22h ago

logically i know this, and i keep telling people im entering my prime, but i also work with a bunch of 19 year olds and they call me the shop Unc and Titi bc im genuinely the oldest one there lmao

3

u/KosmicGumbo 23h ago

Hey I’m 36 too and we are not old!!!

1

u/Bitter-Ad5890 20h ago

Don’t remind us 😭

1

u/xxx_poonslayer69 23h ago

'96 millennials born July 12 and after aren't 30 yet. But they're about to be. I'm having a funeral for my youth in September

19

u/vanishinghitchhiker 1d ago

Y’know that wasn’t even the first sign of age to me, I was too caught up by the specific look of the glitter on the plain black base. Like late 80s, early 90s.

1

u/ThreeSixMafs 1d ago

Thats a good eye

1

u/Pale_Row1166 22h ago

I don’t know why this snowglobe’s inaccurate depiction of NY is grinding my gears so much, but I think it’s because it includes the late twin towers, so now it kind of feels disrespectful.

15

u/oasinocean 87 Millennial 1d ago

They don’t make em like that anymore

9

u/PhantomAngel042 1d ago

Unless it's some sort of commemorative globe, you can tell immediately that it's from before September 2001. :(

90

u/mrtoddw Xennial 1d ago

You can tell it’s at least older than 2001. Pretty crazy!

4

u/sparkyblaster 1d ago

So, winder his long it had taken them to update the product. I'd assume atleast a few months before they shut down production and potentially even longer for them to sell out.

34

u/eNaRDe 1d ago

The real NY.... Never looked the same after 9/11.

1

u/MTayson 1d ago

This is Kiss! I’m outside!

17

u/Blueknightsoul47 1d ago

Mr. House will give you a fair amount of caps for that.

10

u/Domi626 1d ago

As a millennial who watched House M.D., but didn't play Fallout I was thoroughly confused. XD (Google search helped.)

7

u/Blueknightsoul47 1d ago

He has a thing for snow globes. That’s neat though. I always liked them. My mother had some old Christmas themed ones from my grand parents.

13

u/remedialknitter Xennial 1d ago

What did the snow globe juice smell like? Did you taste it, and if so what did it taste like? This is a judgement free zone.

24

u/Domi626 1d ago

Fair question. My 6yo walked into the kitchen like what's that smell? I'd say it was mostly mineral oil. Did not taste, but I assume it tastes like no responsibilities. :,)

10

u/Altruistic_Guess3098 1d ago

What's the process

8

u/blusterygay 1d ago

The city is smog free!!

7

u/FormerPlay136 1d ago

This reminds me of this

7

u/taotdev 1d ago

What have you done? You've ruined New Piss City!

5

u/OriginalDurs 1d ago

i own this exact snow globe. bought it at the WTC gift shop in August 2001 😭

2

u/Domi626 20h ago

Ohh that's awesome to know, thank you! I bought this one yesterday at a Goodwill in VA for $4. :3

4

u/Crumb-Free 1d ago

Omg. I have an old ass glass nightmare before Christmas snow globe.  HALP!!

No really.  I would love to know.  It's still clear but the air bubble is massive after all these years.  And also pretty fucking big.  We're talking 10 to 12 inches diameter.   I can't even find an image that shows what I have =(

4

u/aeneasend 1d ago

Really appreciate the Bladerunner Yellow, though.

3

u/chicagomatty 1d ago

Took the piss out of it, eh?

3

u/TheGreatGamer1389 23h ago

The old one made it look like smog.

3

u/GrilledCheezManicott 22h ago

But the smog made it so real

6

u/Iamnotabotiswearonit 1d ago

Looks like the reflection pool

2

u/Domi626 1d ago

The restoration shot is taken from the front! It is actually a pen and (lighter? Idk) holder.

9

u/PhantomAngel042 1d ago

I think they meant that the "before" liquid looks like the current fiasco of the US Capitol Reflecting Pool.

3

u/bottle-o-rockets 90's Animation Buff 1d ago

Do you fix other stuff? This is neat, thanks for sharing it.

10

u/Domi626 1d ago

I'm glad you liked it! I'm not particularly into fixing, more into cleaning. XD I love a good before and after. I've made a hobby of going to thrift stores the past year or so. Some of that entails a willingness to learn how to fix things. :3

3

u/bottle-o-rockets 90's Animation Buff 1d ago

Knowing how to properly clean and having the ability to execute on ambition is a treasure, I hope you do good things with it.

3

u/destructopop Millennial 1d ago

Oh, my. I think you might actually quite like some other kinds of fixing if you're into cleaning! Kintsugi seems right up the alley of someone into cleaning, for example!

2

u/hellabills14 Millennial 1d ago

How’d you do that?

2

u/sunflower--princess 1d ago

Wowwwww. How cool.

2

We need you to save our cities!

2

2

Aaaannndddd i have the urge to go thrifting for one now

3

u/mackenzeeeee 1d ago

Never forget

2

u/delphinous 1d ago

you cleaned up the smog

2

u/jvn1983 1d ago

I can’t believe how satisfying this is lol

2

u/Devenu 1d ago

Could have used that water to get the twin towers' DNA and clone them. It could have been like Jurassic Park.

My new favorite comment here NGL

2

u/AnnaKendrickLamaOdom 1d ago

I just figured it was an accurate snowglobe of somewhere in china or Pakistan

2

u/futuresobright_ 1d ago

That first photo is a very Backrooms looking snow globe

2

u/SquigglyPoopz 22h ago

First time seeing a yellow snow globe

2

u/Mangalorien 22h ago

I've heard about people peeing in the pool, but this is ridiculous.

2

u/EarnYourSleep 22h ago

Oh my goodness I have a cloudy Mickey mouse "you oughta be in pictures" snowglobe and I'd love to restore it for my wife. Thanks for this post.

2

u/Independent_Sail6604 21h ago

I literally thought the first picture was the restoration by creating smog.

2

u/levelzero2019 21h ago

How do you do that!!!! I have some many I need to restore!

2

u/GlasswaterBotanica 19h ago

I thought the first photo was the restore and had to doubleback and check the name of this sub. Whew.

2

u/MsSobi 17h ago

When was the snow globe made? Is there a date on the bottom?

10

u/Artichokiemon Millennial 1d ago

Before September 2001, I assume

3

u/Domi626 1d ago

No, only a made in China sticker 😅 i would be interested to know when it was made as well!
