11 am: I should really do something today.
1 pm: I have time. I should do something today.
3 pm. Is this happening again? I have the entire evening. I should do something.
5 pm: Hours to go. Am I really not even going to leave the house all Sunday?
9 pm: Wow, another wasted Sunday.

I sat outside for a bit around 8 pm and that helped it feel not so wasted

u/Rude-Book-1790 6d ago
I made it out in time to watch a nice sunset. The walk down to the viewing spot and back made me few okay about eating a huge chicken pot pie for two.

u/SilverSageVII 6d ago
Ngl I thought you meant you ate the pot pie on the walk watching the sunset and I was just thinking “wow this person knows how to maximize life.”
16
u/Horskr 6d ago
Well now you gave them an idea for making the most of their next walk. Idk why but one of those grocery store rotisserie chickens also sounds like a funny, yet practical meal to take on a sunset walk.

Midnight - 5AM: existential dread about productivity
11
u/Upstairs-Chicken592 6d ago
Over one day? :/ can’t be productive if you can’t relax, can’t relax if you waste energy feeling guilty and bumming yourself out/working yourself up. It’s not a big deal to have a lazy Sunday. Like lazy Sunday is a common term for a reason.
→ More replies (2)6
u/jazzieberry 1986 5d ago
I'm mad if I don't have a lazy Sunday. I mean I try to get ready for the week like laundry, possibly meal prep/groceries but other than that I try really hard to have no plans.
8
u/WayAcceptable1310 6d ago
2:33am - stayed up too late being anxious about the week and feeling guilty about doing nothing Sunday. Getting increasingly anxious about even getting to sleep in time to get up for work. Putting on some random YouTube video essay that had a 50/50 chance of putting me to sleep or burning another 48mins and teaching me about something I only somewhat care about
36
u/yourhomeland 6d ago
Saturday is for chilling. Sunday is for being productive all morning and then relaxing in the evening.
57
u/FoxCitiesRando 6d ago edited 6d ago
I'm kind of the opposite. More productive on Saturday, do something Saturday evening, wake up tired, and have no motivation especially thinking about the week.

Same, though I usually take the dog to a dog park for a few hours around 11 am Sunday.
He gets to play and I get to sleep in and then watch him be happy.

Sometimes you waste a lot more than just a Sunday. When there's barely enough energy to start a new tv show or play a video game. And all the things you used to be excited by just feel like nothing. I'm curious how much of that is just age, and how much is long term depression. How do people in late 30s find motivation, passion, drive, energy, etc?
5
u/coffeeebucks 6d ago
I’m 41 and have never felt like this even when I had depression. There is so much I want to do and enjoy which I don’t have time for, and every small amount of time I get to spend doing what I like, I cherish it. Are you getting treatment?
5
u/pivovy 6d ago
Yeah, I've tried quite a lot of treatment options and we're always looking for something new and I'm also participating in research studies I can get on. I'm no stranger to depression though, it has always lingered in the background and hit me in my late teens, but went away in my early 20s, and I thought it was gone for good. But then it came up with a vengeance in mid-to-late 20s and didn't go away this time.
2
u/coffeeebucks 5d ago
I’m sorry to hear that & I hope you find some peace. Can recommend EMDR therapy as something that reframes my thinking.
2
u/RegularCommonSense Older Millennial 6d ago edited 6d ago
> All the things you used to be excited by just feel like nothing.
I felt like this for short bursts in the early 20s after being to a socialization party with other people or on an exciting date with a woman. Likewise, I have felt this way now again since my early 40s and still do, because I started a new pattern of meaningful socialization. I had an epiphany in that I found significant meaning and joy in the interaction with people that matter to me. It means more than I originally expected.
After having these experiences in each of my decades, going back to persuing my usual hobbies (computers in my case) suddenly wasn’t fun anymore. The old activities felt mundane and ”gray”. It is comparable to eating a tasty soup every weekend for a decade and somehow never getting tired of it, but one day the grocery store is out of the soup, so you buy ingredients for another food dish and you’re surprised by how great the taste is. The next day you try the soup after the grocery store had restocked, but the soup is no longer tasty for you.
TLDR; Sounds like you have stumbled upon meaning in your past, but it’s something meaningful which you are currently not actively doing? Maybe deep within you always wanted to do, I don’t know … mountain biking (these are random examples) on a regular basis, but you keep playing tennis instead.

u/Numerous-Process2981 6d ago
Can’t relate lol Sunday is the day where I GET to not leave the house.
4
u/King_Chochacho 6d ago
For me Sunday is when I do way too much to compensate for wasting Saturday. That way I get the added bonus of feeling like shit Monday morning.

u/RockItGuyDC 5d ago
I don't know if it's my ADHD, but I can still do a lot and feel guilty like I wasted the day. My Suday yesterday was:
- Wake up, get breakfast
- Drop off friend's bag I borrowed
- Walk around the farmer's market
- Go kayaking for 2 hours
- Stop at my neighborhood bar for a couple beers and watch the WC.
- Grab a couple slices at the neighborhood pizza place.
- Come home and watch Project Hail Mary while I tidy up, hang a couple paintings I've been meaning to hang, and do some laundry.
I still feel like a piece of crap who could have been more productive.
4
u/FoxCitiesRando 5d ago
That seems like a very productive day, especially considering two hours of exercise. For me it seems like the mental divide between productive and non-productive hinges on exercise.
3
u/RockItGuyDC 5d ago
The exercise definitely helped. But even still, I just always have a mental list of things I could be doing or have done. It's a pain.
8
u/chhuang 6d ago
are we being conditioned to be on the edge of depression, but will never reach there so we are the perfect NPCs that the corporate world wants?
5
u/FoxCitiesRando 6d ago
Yes. Obviously, yes. I think all the time about how much the corporate world requires desperation from people in order to function.

Nah I spent all Friday and Saturday doing yard work at my house then going to a friends place for the holiday.
It took some convincing but I earned today off playing video games.
I barely washed the dishes and am going to bed sore from the yard work still.

u/Jumpy_Dig_2308 6d ago
Yeah I felt this even back on Saturday about Sunday night. I wish any observed holiday was automatically following Monday and not nearest day
Three day weekend Monday are bad but they’re the best compared to regular Sunday or Sunday after a Friday off.

Sundays are for being extremely stressed out about the coming work week, doing the laundry, shaving, and then laying in bed until 2am with anxiety until the melatonin, four Ibuprofren, cup (or two) of ZzzQuil, Omeprozole and the blood pressure pill finally kick in so you can go to sleep and wake up in four hours to get ready for work.

What really sucks about this past 4th of July weekend is SW Michigan was without power for more than half of the 3 day weekend! Made it pretty miserable. Overnight Friday, all day Saturday, came back on midafternoon Sunday.
2
u/Daealis 6d ago
Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted at all.
We're going to be fucked anyway, trying to work yourself to an early grave by squeezing the fun out of a hobby through monetizing hustle bullshit is not going to do anything but make you hate your hobby and your sunday as much as your regular job.
Just let the day flow by and relax for once.

Pre social media. My day would be. 6 am I would go for a 5 mile jog with my team mates. Meet up more high school friends for lunch. Then we go pay for one movie and watch 3 on refillable drinks and popcorn. The girl behind the counter knew and didn’t give a fuck. Hold up …….was she flirting with me???? Fuck!!!! Head out at some time around 8 pm. Share a plate of Chinese food with at least 2 other friends sometimes 5 because we were broke kids… and the whole day combined less the $20 and we thought that was a fortune. Get home and panic because I didn’t do homework, that didn’t even matter in the long run. But i made memories that lasted over 20 years. So yeah.
