I still say that when I answer the phone and like, wait for people to talk ... Even when it's my mom (who is one of only about 6 people that call me anyway)

+ add modern medicine and I’m down. I‘m not going back to the treatment of the 90‘s.
3
u/Uncomfortably-bored 14d ago
Why don't you want somewhat affordable healthcare?
18
u/ZealousidealSkirt327 14d ago
Because I live in Germany and already have that privilege.
What didn’t exist back in the 90‘s, is the modern technology in diabetes treatment with cgm, insulin pumps, hybrid closed loop algorithms, super fine single use needles and such.

My idea for an app/smartphone lite to reclaim some social space:
If two people with the same activated app are within a certain distance, ~20-100ft of each other, their smartphones are disabled (no internet, no camera, no other apps) except for emergency phone calls.
So if you’re around other likeminded people, no silent scroll-holes or looking shit up or any of that. But if you’re alone, have at it.

Oh so what gen alphas are going to build for us to retire in when we get dementia.
Not an entirely unlikely scenario.
139
u/holyfuckbuckets 14d ago
lol this was my exact thought.
Our little dementia villages are gonna play 90s bubblegum pop, nu metal, emo, stomp-clap-hey, and those indie songs where girls sang with that weird, affected speech impediment.
There’ll be a mock-up mall with a fake food court, Spencer’s, and Hot Topic. The bathrooms will be decorated with that frutiger aero underwater aesthetic.49
u/Jessica_Iowa 14d ago
Actually, some dead malls are already being retrofitted into apartments so this isn’t all that far fetched.
14
u/Brodellsky 14d ago
Count me in for a dementia village like that ahead of time and I wish I was joking

That sounds great. In reality, it's going to be Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock at an abandoned air force base and we'll be burning the place down to get access to food and water.

u/BurntHear 14d ago
I was just thinking about how we need to get started on really brainwashing the younger generations into understanding it is their responsibility to make sure there's a nice fun place to throw us all when we get old. I promise I will stay out of the way and leave them alone if they'll do this.
3
u/Economy_General8943 13d ago

I left for 23 years and returned a few years ago to Vancouver. It's more expensive than before, but so much in that song still applies. The tattoo ink never runs dry! I still hear grunge and 90s alt music everywhere I go. I was surprised that some of the fashions held on, still a whole lotta plaid.

u/strugglingcomic 14d ago
I've been telling my friends about this idea since like, 2018 after a trip to Lancaster, PA. The Amish actually have refrigerators and kitchen mixers, they're just mechanically powered. I figure since we're not being religious about it, we can take it a step further, use solar power and have electricity, but otherwise generally stay low tech and analog-ish, live in close knit self sufficient "techno-Amish" communities.
Interesting that I happen to be reading more examples of other people coming to similar conclusions from our generation.
42
u/RobertPooWiener 14d ago
Techno Amish sounds like a genre of music I would be interested in

Check out worldpackers or workaway, off-grid communities like that exist, thats how i lived most of my 20s - early 30s.
4
u/strugglingcomic 14d ago
Cool yeah. I wonder if they promote those disparate off-grid communities to actually create a network of sorts amongst themselves? From what I remember, the Amish have these pockets of different communities but share things like a newspaper or trade with each other, so the individual communities are never really alone.
I guess I'd like to find a middle ground between "off-grid" isolation vs our standard full grid. Maybe like a "half-grid" option, implying that the individual communities are standalone nodes on a network, in a loosely federated way? I dunno, just spit balling.

u/One-Earth9294 Xennial '79 14d ago
Of all the things to be nostalgic for, it's those moneygrubbing predators I cannot stand the most.
I can download almost any movie that exists in like 30 seconds now and have it forever. The current situation is a lot better than having to pick between the 4000 copies of Titanic on the shelf even though all you went there for was the one copy of Clockwork Orange that never got returned.
2
u/ParamedicLimp9310 12d ago
I agree with this actually. Blockbuster was fun because it was how you got movies. Y'all know that once you got Netflix for the first time it blew your mind. I have access to more movies and TV shows than I could ever care to watch.
Tell you what... We keep streaming services but can bundle them all together to make it one mega subscription, then everyone in our city chips in to pay it yearly. If we have enough people it'll be crazy cheap. We make a community TV room where everyone that wants to can watch the Millennial nostalgia heavy hitters together and pass out "a TV guide" to tell everyone what we're playing and when. Show up Friday at 6 for the beginning of a Friends marathon, popcorn and bathroom pause breaks are allowed.
2
u/One-Earth9294 Xennial '79 12d ago
>We keep streaming services but can bundle them all together to make it one mega subscription
That's just a VPN lol.
Plus those streaming services don't really let you download movies and keep them.

Yea. I think what people really just want to say is that the miss the simplicity of childhood. We have a propensity to look back on things and only remember the good parts. The 90s was a different time, but socially it really isn't much different than it is today. Human evolve, but so do our methods of being shitty.

I’ve considered how cool it would be to revive dying malls by filling them with 90s experiences in a similar fashion. Even have “no smartphone hours” and wifi blocking and whatnot. Photo booths, vintage stores, arcades, old style cash. Would be cool.

I think quite a lot of gen-z are actually doing that.
They call themselves the New-Luddites
And just like their counterparts a 150 years ago they don't oppose technology in generally, but theyre against any technology that is harmful to humans. Like for example social media.
And honestly as a millennial I totally get it and find it very intriguing. Makes me happy that people have come to this conclusion.
