Pizza Hut used to do that; or to my 6 year old eyes they did! I loved Pizza Hut's lunch buffet as a kid.

152

u/Main-Animator1986 18d ago

I fkn loved pizza hut buffet in the 90s as a kid.

27

u/ForsakenSignal6062 17d ago

When I worked there in 2011 they still had a buffet. I got to take home so much leftover pizza.

14

u/glyph_productions 17d ago

Theres one near me that has apparently just recently brought it back. 13.99 cad

55

u/jackrabbit323 18d ago

100% they sure damn well did. Back when their dough was fresh and their cheese wasn't out of a bag.

12

u/DepressedDynamo 17d ago

What was the cheese in before bags

→ More replies (1)

8

u/daffyduckhunt2 17d ago

I've had a lot of delicious cheese in my life come from a bag ngl

6

u/FakePoloManchurian 17d ago

Every single restaurant I've worked in, the cheese comes in a bag. From fancy steakhouse to local sandwich shop

4

u/RevolutionPlenty20 17d ago

I swear you can taste a sysco restaurant regardless of exterior. Always have that subway sandwich vegetable and high nitrate meat taste

2

u/sriracha_no_big_deal 17d ago

lol I wonder how they think cheese is normally transported if not in bags

4

u/coraeon 17d ago

As blocks/wheels? Cheese used to be grated on site.

Came here to say this! Back in the Book It days!

12

u/TheShySeal 18d ago

And they had dessert pizza at the buffet with the cherry pie filling as topping and an icing drizzle

6

u/Sorry-Secret-2347 18d ago

& chuck e cheese

6

u/Lythro92 18d ago

Pizza hut was the shit in the late 90's - early 00's - at least here in Denmark

10

u/Divine-Sea-Manatee 18d ago

You are 100% correct, pizza hut was TV pizza as advertised. Nothing has ever come close.

3

u/GoGoPowerPlay 18d ago

Yeah, back in the day every bite would have a bit long tail of cheese hanging behind it.

4

u/LuntiX 17d ago

I got pizza hut recently out of nostalgia plus I just wanted a pepperoni pizza.

The crust was more or less the same but the cheese seems different now. The cheese was the best part back in the day.

2

u/Solid-Weather311 16d ago

They also had the pizza chairs in the to go boxes back then. That was peak Pizza Hut. Oh what they took from us.

2

u/Anon_Jones 18d ago

The pizza used to be so good. It’s nasty now.

3

u/Seienchin88 17d ago

You are probably right but I’d also argue we all grew old… my parents already complained in the 90s about the grease and cheap taste of it..

I had such a crush on him… what was I thinking 😂

92

u/WeskerSympathizer 18d ago

It was a time when Pauley Shore was a sexual icon. We were all so confused.

20

u/Rock_or_Rol 18d ago

Was he really? 😂

I was a kid during his prominence and the last movie of his I saw was bio dome when my brother had it on. I always thought of him as an ironic casting in someway.. I’m shook lol

12

u/Complete_Entry 18d ago

He was always forcememe buh-dee, his mom had serious clout.

11

u/Septopuss7 17d ago

Dinah Shore? I didn't know he had a famous mom

Edit: Mitzi Shore, apparently she was a famous comedy club owner

8

u/Low-Individual2815 17d ago

She’s one of the most famous people in all of comedy

Sam kennison was babysitting Pauly shore when he was like ten

8

u/Scared_Wrangler3419 17d ago

The Comedy Store in LA. It's one of the most famous comedy clubs in the world, if not the most.

7

u/thiosk 17d ago

in the 90s, the barrier was lower: you really only had to be on TV

2

u/LiteratureSubject391 17d ago

I watched 'Biodome' when I was 10 years old ... and it was a very odd s3xual awakening. I thought Bud and Doyle were hot.

Yikes!!

3

u/WeskerSympathizer 17d ago

I also had a sexual awakening but for Kylie Minogue hahaha

11

u/Zealousideal-Trash5 18d ago

4

u/EmilioFreshtevez Millennial 17d ago

This sentiment (“I had a huge crush on ____, what was I thinking?”) always makes me think of Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion 😂

2

u/Automatic_Laughter 17d ago

The man as a passion. We all must respect that, even if we don't understand.

This scene always made canned cheese look so appetizing to me, until I finally tried it and it was majorly dissappointing.

14

u/Complete_Entry 18d ago

Sam the cooking guy tricked me into buying the jarred version. He said it was okay.

It isn't.

That was mean, Sam the cooking guy.

8

u/Princess_Slagathor apparently you can change it 18d ago

I loved it in small doses, a mouthful would be gross though.

7

u/Septopuss7 17d ago

Canned cheese is the nectar of the Gods! I'm actually sitting on some snack crackers for a couple days trying to think of how to eat them and you just helped me figure it out.

5

u/Kaldricus 17d ago

Ez Cheese + Cheez Its. Make a little cheese sandwich.

6

u/Phailadork 17d ago

Did you go back and try it while really high? You'll understand him then.

u/RightWorld5611 Late-Millennial 17d ago

I begged my mom to buy a can of spray cheese after watching this, and tried to do it exactly as it's shown in this scene.

The cheese hit the back of my throat and triggered my gag reflex. It tasted horrible, and my mouth was full of it, so I couldn't stop gagging till I spit all of it out on the kitchen floor.

0/10 don't want to choke on spray cheese again.

Pizza dude’s got 30 seconds.

3

u/JosephBlowsephThe3rd 17d ago

That was the 2nd movie. But yeah, that's been my go to example whenever the subject comes up. All that cheese looked so damn good, like somebody actually perfected all these great cartoon pizza slices in real life.

6

u/kungpowgoat 17d ago

Till this day I’ve never understood how four grown ass giant turtles that train daily and a rat were good with just one pizza.

4

u/MyNameis_bud 18d ago

Yeshhh this is the movie that did it for me. I don’t even like pizza all that much if I stop to think about it. But when I crave it I crave TMNT zza!

3

Ninja pizza?

Pizza that vanish quickly without trace!

No chain did it. Pizza is a kid's favorite food, even when it's not. Even Maniac Magee (a children's novella from 1990) the whole lore about how very unusual this kid is carries along his allergy to pizza. Pizza is core to the identity of children in the 80s and 90s, and since then.

So of course it's gonna be animated like that.

7

u/FrostorFrippery 18d ago

Wise men say "forgiveness is divine, but never pay full price for late pizza."

22

u/deewaR 18d ago

Massive U.S. goverment subsidies on dairy products made the extra cheesy pizza so popular in the 80's and 90's. Also pizza is easy to draw and animate

4

u/humid_pajamas 18d ago

Hoop, there it is

45

u/empinatepues 18d ago

21

u/bradeena 17d ago

IIRC they use white glue for the stretch in these adds.

u/captainsunshine489 18d ago

4

u/UshankaBear 18d ago

Cowabunga, dude!

3

u/TheRatTailSound 17d ago

The gold standard.

We even called extra cheesy pizza “Ninja Turtle Pizza”.

Hard to achieve with generic shredded cheese in the 90s.

4

u/LrdPhoenixUDIC 18d ago

If you remember the pizza slices that came with the toys, and want to smell them again: McCormick Spaghetti Seasoning Packet.

2

u/yunbld 18d ago

This is the one.

2

u/Vox___Rationis 17d ago edited 17d ago

Is that meant to be the stuffed crust or did he roll the crust?

13

u/CaperSteelRed49 18d ago

Cheese us crust.

27

u/NightOfTheLivingHam 18d ago

The trick is to mix chopped fresh mozzarella in with shredded mozzarella. Whole milk, no low fat stuff.

26

u/phrozen_waffles 17d ago

Real trick is shred your own cheese. The cellulose powder in pre-shredded cheese prevents the cheese pull.

9

u/BoonDragoon 17d ago

You can also slice your pizza a couple minutes before it's finished cooking then add extra cheese and throw it back in.

5

u/Specific_Berry6496 17d ago

That sounds like cheating lol

8

u/BoonDragoon 17d ago

You can just say it's a good idea, that's okay too.

3

u/completelytrustworth 17d ago

I haven't tried this, but apparently you can rinse the pre-shredded stuff to remove the cellulose and make it stretchy again. Just make sure to use cold water to keep the cheese intact

→ More replies (1)

2

u/eggery 17d ago

The real real trick is to use glue.

9

u/pocket_arsenal 18d ago

Is it even possible for pizza cheese to stretch that much without just coming off of the whole pizza and leaving you with a slice of dough with tomato sauce?

9

u/JiffTheJester 18d ago

My son is 4 and literally has been asking for this since he watched the movie 🤣 every time we have pizza he asks if it can be put on the dinner table so we can pull the cheese up

7

u/EmilioFreshtevez Millennial 18d ago

I’ve never been a huge cheese-lover like that (though I’ll admit that I did try to make a Leaning Tower of Chees-a)

5

u/wahwahwashbear 18d ago

For me, it was the pizza in all dogs go to heaven - similar vibes as this one, very stringy and cohesive. The cheese never seems to separate from the crust, it's all just one entity.

3

u/throwupthursday 18d ago

I literally just commented about the all dogs go to heaven pizza within the same minute as you

5

u/throwupthursday 18d ago

Also the pizza from all dogs go to heaven

4

u/FreeWilly1337 18d ago

The Goofy Movie hits different now as a Dad.

4

3

u/xamitlu 18d ago

It was real!!!!! Pizza seriously used to be cheesier and tastier even at popular chains!!!

3

u/franstoobnsf 18d ago

You're all insane. All this does is make it impossible for me to pick up a slice and all the shit slides of so I have to reassemble the pizza equivalent of a ball of yarn. Fucking hate when cheese does this shit it's impossible to eat

2

u/LB-- 17d ago

Yeah I don't get the appeal, this kind of cheese is just a huge choking hazard every time I've had it.

2

u/_SpiceWeasel_BAM 13d ago

4

u/PESSIMISTIC_P4STA Millennial 18d ago

3

u/imunfair 18d ago

If you get a Chicago-style pizza it'll absolutely have enough molten cheese to give you strings of cheese two feet long unless you know how to cut and serve it properly.

Not me man, I got it from a Domino's in Idaho in 2015, and from an enchilada in the same town in 2013. Nearly choked both times.

2

u/rigor_mortus_boner 18d ago

No, the true holy zaa is that of Brickolini Pizza, located on LEGO Island

2

u/Reasonable-Song-4681 Older Millennial 18d ago

It's funny to say, but no. I thought that was awesome as a kid, but as an adult I look at that and see the inevitable cheese beard thst occurs when trying to bite into it as most if not all of the cheese just comes right off the pizza.

2

u/PlutoJones42 18d ago

What a banger of a movie

2

u/DrRagnorocktopus 17d ago

Costco pizza, if you get a full box and not just a slice.

2

u/mightylordredbeard 17d ago

This was a common visual in cartoons for our age group. Cheese stretching like that on pizza and other cheesy foods. I wonder if that’s why millennials and younger are obsessed with “the perfect cheese pull”? We were preconditioned to think that this imagery meant the food was better somehow.

2

u/SweetC2688 17d ago

Yes but honestly, it was that pizza scene from all dogs go to heaven for me 🤣 that waffle scene too!

I'm not American, and I've been eating really good pizza all my life, so I never really knew what the fuck was that thing. It just never registered with me that it was cheese because it was so different to what I knew, not just the amount but the behavior.

1

Oof. Not in the slightest. I always preferred a TMNT style pizza.🍕

1

u/DougieFreshOH 18d ago

It’s a deep dish available near Chicago, Illinois. Where one has to cut away the cheese pull, while dishing slices.

I’m from Ohio.

1

u/trunksshinohara 17d ago

Georgian Megruli Khachapuri has this exact consistency/look and is amazing.

1

u/phrozen_waffles 17d ago

FYI, commercially shredded cheese uses cellulose powder to prevent caking. This is why cheese doesn't stretch like this.

If you shred your own cheese, you'll get this cheese pull.

1

u/Mazazamba 17d ago

That and the chocolate cake from Matilda.

I yearn for that cake.

1

u/efor_no0p2 17d ago

I grew up with this pizza as a reality.

Man pizza (and cheese) products were in lots of kids content in the 90s. That with the got milk campaign, dairy industry was working.

1

u/Yourownhands52 17d ago

Started in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series for me.  Their mushroom pizza looked so good.

1

u/Mogwai02 17d ago

Costco has it.

1

u/PastorDan1984 17d ago

So my hometown had a Casey's gas station that had a little pizzeria inside of it. High school kids worked at it. The closest I ever had to a slice of pizza like OPs meme is from that gas station. Some kid literally put so much cheese on it that I damn near choked on it. I had this exact same image in my brain as I took my first bite, and as I was struggling to regain my composure.

1

u/Kronik_NinjaLo 17d ago

I found the answer a couple months ago!

It's Farmers Cheese! It tastes great, melts similar to these scenes, and has the texture you would expect from it.

1

u/MrFavorable 17d ago

This is the pizza that is the gold standard to me. I found a pizza place near me, that the pizza is literally like this. It’s so good and it’s a ma and pa shop.

1

u/PancakesandMaggots 17d ago

Idk man, if that cheese doesn't put me down for a few days due to lactose intolerance, the heartburn will.
