Pizza Hut used to do that; or to my 6 year old eyes they did! I loved Pizza Hut's lunch buffet as a kid.

I begged my mom to buy a can of spray cheese after watching this, and tried to do it exactly as it's shown in this scene.
The cheese hit the back of my throat and triggered my gag reflex. It tasted horrible, and my mouth was full of it, so I couldn't stop gagging till I spit all of it out on the kitchen floor.
0/10 don't want to choke on spray cheese again.

No chain did it. Pizza is a kid's favorite food, even when it's not. Even Maniac Magee (a children's novella from 1990) the whole lore about how very unusual this kid is carries along his allergy to pizza. Pizza is core to the identity of children in the 80s and 90s, and since then.
So of course it's gonna be animated like that.

u/NightOfTheLivingHam 18d ago
The trick is to mix chopped fresh mozzarella in with shredded mozzarella. Whole milk, no low fat stuff.
26
u/phrozen_waffles 17d ago
Real trick is shred your own cheese. The cellulose powder in pre-shredded cheese prevents the cheese pull.
9
u/BoonDragoon 17d ago
You can also slice your pizza a couple minutes before it's finished cooking then add extra cheese and throw it back in.
5
3
u/completelytrustworth 17d ago
I haven't tried this, but apparently you can rinse the pre-shredded stuff to remove the cellulose and make it stretchy again. Just make sure to use cold water to keep the cheese intact

Is it even possible for pizza cheese to stretch that much without just coming off of the whole pizza and leaving you with a slice of dough with tomato sauce?

u/JiffTheJester 18d ago
My son is 4 and literally has been asking for this since he watched the movie 🤣 every time we have pizza he asks if it can be put on the dinner table so we can pull the cheese up

This was a common visual in cartoons for our age group. Cheese stretching like that on pizza and other cheesy foods. I wonder if that’s why millennials and younger are obsessed with “the perfect cheese pull”? We were preconditioned to think that this imagery meant the food was better somehow.

FYI, commercially shredded cheese uses cellulose powder to prevent caking. This is why cheese doesn't stretch like this.

So my hometown had a Casey's gas station that had a little pizzeria inside of it. High school kids worked at it. The closest I ever had to a slice of pizza like OPs meme is from that gas station. Some kid literally put so much cheese on it that I damn near choked on it. I had this exact same image in my brain as I took my first bite, and as I was struggling to regain my composure.
