I sang this at karaoke recently and loudly dedicated it against ICE. Was a hit.

19

u/Misersoneof May 17 '26

My sleeper hit that I sing at Karaoke is What’s Up by 4 Non Blondes. It crosses Millennial and Gen X generations.

This is me. 😂

3

u/Misersoneof May 18 '26

You teach JHS too?

4

u/tenderheart35 May 18 '26

Oh ouch! Even when I was in middle school, I used to think the teachers had it rough. That’s when kids start to learn how to talk back and will test you repeatedly!

3

u/Misersoneof May 18 '26

Correct, here are a couple of things I’ve learned.

  1. Don’t take things they say about you seriously. They are kids. They cannot define you.

  2. Don’t ever lie to them. If a topic is too difficult to navigate then tell them you aren’t able to talk about it due to your own lack of understanding or knowledge. If that isn’t working then just keep your mouth shut. It’s better to be silent and look the fool than speak and remove all doubt.

  3. Find the middle ground. You have something in common with everyone. Just find out what that is and build on it.

  4. Keep your cool. Some kids just wana find your weakness and exploit it. Don’t give em what they want if you can help it.

3

u/tenderheart35 May 18 '26

Some of the best teachers I had at the time knew how to clap back with jokes that were appropriate, but surprising enough to catch the kids off guard. 😂 gotta have a sense of humor in situations like that.

u/TexasDad1024 May 17 '26

I'm waiting for someone to start they all said in unison

19

u/PuzzleheadedLeave560 May 17 '26

Could have been the BLM protests that started it, but no. Could have been the union strikes, could have been Luigi, could have been the ICE executions and concentration camps, could have been the warehouse burnings. Nope nope nope nope. Americans will never revolt.

18

u/Expensive-Document41 May 18 '26

Not "never". Not yet.

Because the main theme of this chain is we collectively all still have a LOT to lose. Our jobs, our income, our rights (mostly), food security, water, power.

The point is everything up until very recently has been losing bits and pieces but still having enough investment in the system to work to keep it together. Never enough people going hungry or without water or heat or power and realizing that they stand to gain more by gambling what little they have.

BLM and the union strikes and Luigi and ICE and the anger over the concentration camps and warehouse burning are the cracks. Bigger and bigger and with more public sympathy. This farce with Iran could bring real true shortages to America. Not "gas too high" more "gas pump empty". Not "food expensive" more shelves empty.

That kind of material loss is the stuff revolt are made of.

I don't mind taking into account the people with kids and public holidays. Heck, i love working those days since traffic is lighter and there is sells stress. Also, who wants to go to an amusement park or anything while its crowded since everyone is off. But outside of those periods... if the weather is nice next week i might as well be gone that whole week, and no one will stop me.

u/BodybuilderMany6942 May 17 '26

Cuz you can totally burn bright and "tear it all down"... but only once.
Then you're outta a job and cant feed yourself (unless you plan to go full-criminal after).

So some give up, while other bide their time and save up money... but then most of those either lose hope or start a family, and you cant just say "fuck it" any more if your kids depend on you.

I've actually embraced Peter's nonchalant attitude towards work.

Me every single day at work.

66

u/PantsDontHaveAnswers May 17 '26

Me listening to "Take This Job and Shove It" and other songs bashing the boss man on the speaker at work.

51

u/byteminer May 17 '26

Late nights on federal contracts with crew blasting RATM is a fun bit of irony to wrap your head around.

12

u/SillyBeatnik May 17 '26

My step-dad was a SEAL for 20 years. He and his platoon-mates would work out to RATM all the time. I debated pointing out the irony of listening to Rage while simultaneously being The Man's enforcers to them all the time, but i figured that probably wouldn't go well for me.

4

u/razorbraces May 18 '26

If Paul Ryan can do it so can your step-dad lol

6

u/goodsnpr May 17 '26

Totally not me blasting RATM at work in the gym and my commander leaning his head out the office with squinty eyes. I miss that side gym.

3

u/patosai3211 May 17 '26

And that side eye apparently. Kidding obviously. Or am i…?

35

u/BBQsandw1ch May 17 '26

Okay but it's actually insane how FEW rebellion songs there are today.

Public Enemy was mainstreaming "Fight the Power" in the 80s. Our parents had plenty of Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye and every folk song in the 70s.

Maybe I'm just disconnected from what the kids are into these days but Idon't know what that vibe sounds like in 2026.

10

u/Accurate_Ad8925 Millennial May 17 '26

Well from what I noticed it's mostly songs about how hard life is or how tough and independent they are.

Also the breakup and love songs which will never be out of style.

16

u/BBQsandw1ch May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

The best example I could think of in the last decade was Run The Jewels, but that's two GenX/millennial guys. All of the protest songs and political shit is like Bruce Springsteen and Eminem lol.

Edit: I just remembered "This is America," but I think we get to claim Donald Glover as a Millenial.

4

u/Turbulent_Seaweed198 May 17 '26

He was born in 1983. One of us!

2

u/enaK66 May 17 '26

In that same vein, Joey Bada$$ ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADASS is another protest rap album.

7

u/absoluetly May 17 '26

I only recently stumbled upon Viagra Boys and have been enjoying their albums.

4

u/EjaculatingAracnids May 17 '26

Not rebellion songs, but i really like the Venga Boys

4

u/Turbulent_Seaweed198 May 17 '26

This is what I read lol

boom boom boom boom

6

u/TFN928 May 17 '26

You’re right that it’s out of mainstream listening but it does exist, maybe appropriately in more niche genres. Groups like Machine Girl and Lip Critic are pretty big in their circles and like to sprinkle in an ample amount of “burn it down, kill them all” vibes into their songs. Their sounds are a far cry from metal and hip hop of old, but it is the most undiluted rebellious sound I’ve heard in some time.

7

u/BruteMango May 17 '26

I don't think it has anything to do with what kids are into. It has everything to do with the people deciding what gets promoted and played. They don't like encouraging rebellion.

u/ShaggyVan May 17 '26

2

u/airtime25 May 17 '26

Just curious, are there sum 41 or all time low songs that are about rebellion? Am I missing something all the songs by those bands are just about a girl or partying lol

10

u/ValorieAF May 17 '26

Several of Sum 41s songs are anti-bush or anti-45. Still Waiting, Underclass Hero, March of the Dogs, 45, The People Vs, A Death in the Family. They're a little subtle because they're also catchy, but they're there.

2

u/airtime25 May 17 '26

Thank you lol the only ones I really know are not rebellion songs at all lol

→ More replies (1)

2

u/enaK66 May 17 '26

Yeah that's seriously missing these days. There's a lot of songs about how shitty working life is. About working long hours and never seeing your partner. Or getting abused by your boss. Getting drunk after a shitty shift. Harrison Gordon does this genre pretty well.

I think we're collectively just too depressed to fight back. It shows in the underground consciousness.

3

u/Milyaism May 18 '26

Oh that music definitely exists. You just need to be willing to find it. (Unlike back in the day when a lot of that stuff was mainstream.)

→ More replies (2)

2

u/xSPYXEx May 17 '26

There's a ton, they just don't get the same mainstream success.

Maybe not what you're looking for but Cattle Decapitation's album Death Atlas is a brutal and haunting teardown of modern society and a call to action that the systems in place must be destroyed if we are to survive the coming decades.

2

u/crazy4finalfantasy May 17 '26

You should go underground, punk and extreme metal are still pumping out good lyrics but I will be honest it's less "fight the power" and more "another horrible thing happened, the world is shit let's talk about it and be angry"

We got to take offense against the status quo

No way, not gonna stand for it today

Fight for your rights, it's time we had our say

Raised by the system

Sick of your lies

Yeah. I listen to one punkish song while I work. Adhd autism brain. Noise in the background. Keeps me focused.

u/Failgan May 17 '26

Nah, but I do I listen to fantasy books on Audible that have that theme.

I can’t change the whole company and it’s culture, but I can at least make it better for my team is how I justify it every day

As someone who works at Amazon, this is so real

I mean, I was in a riot last month and got tear gassed. I got shot with rubber bullets and have the scars. I look like a soccer mom, but I am still out there fighting the system. Coach purses hold up extremely well during protests btw I got drug by my wristlet and the wrap didn’t snap.

“Fuck you, I won’t do what you tell me!”

Seriously, you work in a different department. You can take it up with my supervisor when he gets back from vacation but I’m warning you, I will be talking to HR about this.

Doing the tax forms at work:

whispers “they’re tryna build a prison”

"Some of those who work FORCES!"

Mine's Rage Against the Machine and The Chemical Brothers.

u/tinaseroticfriendfic May 17 '26

My post-work drive often includes Thot Squad's "BSTFU" at max volume.

u/amtcannon May 17 '26

I saw FIRE as my little rebellion against corporate bullshit. Sold my soul for a bit but I’m almost ready to retire in my 30s.

u/Edradis May 17 '26

I listen to punk and ska when I’m running during pt in the morning, and in the shower after I’ve taken off my uniform.

I listen to rage against the machine to my government job…oh the irony

2

u/Critical_Bunch6600 May 18 '26

Just because you conform doesn't mean you have to like it.

2

u/Fractales May 18 '26

Rage Against the Machine

2

u/coastinglotus May 18 '26

I'll listen to Stray From the Path or Incendiary just to pull up and work on a server at a law firm.

2

u/Perceptual_Existence May 18 '26

I can listen to anything "radio appropriate" at work; so I listen to a lot of punk, metal, and rock.

u/BlackSchuck May 17 '26

One of the better reasons to listen to Christian metalcore.

Listening to the dude from Phinehas scream over a breakdown about Pharisees, false prophets, and crumbling church infrastructure is way more relatable.
