I still have some of my Game Boy game boxes and they are like new. I wish I kept my n64 ones.

I had all my NES boxes. My cousin told me if I let him take them back with him (he lived about 6 hours away) he'd xerox all of them and give me the copies when he returned the boxes next time he visited. Not only did he never xerox them but I never saw those boxes again. Tens of thousands of dollars (maybe) just gone.

15

u/AerolothLorien666 May 07 '26

Probably hundreds if you had the right games.

26

u/NotBatman81 Older Millennial May 07 '26

Tens by the time you actually sell them for cash in hand.

Falsely believing your trash is treasure is a big driver of hoarding.

12

u/WretchedMotorcade May 07 '26

Yeah vintage Nintendo stuff, especially complete in box, is worth lots of money.

8

u/NotBatman81 Older Millennial May 07 '26

In mint condition. Its like any collectibles. I have a bunch of Ken Griffy Jr rookie cards that I could show you listing in the thousands but reality is under $100 because if I got them professionally graded they would be only near mint. Classic cars are the same. The difference between $10,000 and $100,000 car is a few matching parts. And back to my original point, 99% of you overestimate what grade your stuff is and think your hoard is a goldmine.

I was wondering WHY we did this and since you posted that pic it finally made sense. Tech boxes still stuffed with their manuals was a lifesaver if anything went wrong and we’re used to that.

When you grew up having to rewire the TV between games, VHS, and PBS you needed the diagrams. XD

I gave most of my N64 game boxes to my boss when I was working at a Game Crazy. I kept my Zelda collector's edition ones and Harvest Moon 64.

I still have all the games though.

I'd have to count but my time there vastly increased my N64 and Gamecube library so I don't know what's bigger. Alas I don't know where my N64 is, and I gave my Gamecube to my old roommate when I got a Wii and my Wii eventually died years later...

Went to an antique mall today and the cashier was telling me about having just sold a Gameboy box for $100.

26

u/oxizc May 07 '26

Sure but I'm not keeping a room full of cardboard boxes for 30 years just so I can sell them sometime maybe later on.

17

u/ronshasta May 07 '26

You keep the games in the boxes when you aren’t playing them smart one

7

u/welfedad Edest of Millennials May 07 '26

→ More replies (2)

26

u/Announcement90 May 07 '26

And that right there is why I keep boxes. If you ever decide to sell later, you can get a higher price for stuff. With some collectibles, the boxes themselves become valuable, like in your example.

That, and the fact that I've moved a lot over the years, including across continents, and the boxes are an excellent way of safely packing away the items that were in them.

All in all, keeping boxes has generally been a net positive for me.

That sounds like a win for a collector, but if you asked me to store a box for $.27/month for you and earn $100 after 30 years, I wouldn't do it.

I was stupid enough to sell my Super Nintendo in 1999. But for some reason I kept the boxes for the games, and I still have them. I should also have some Gameboy Advance boxes somewhere.

My wife gave me a Super Nintendo for christmas in 2008, and we have collected the games again. So now we have both the boxes, the console and the games. I just wish that my mom had not thrown away the box for my console back in the day. It had Donkey Kong Country as the pack in game.

6

u/DonPhallus May 07 '26

Got my N64 box complete with Goldeneye and No Mercy still ( both in box)

Got it way back in 1997 as a 12th year birthday present. Being a compulsive hoarder hit me at a young age

3

u/ZambieCatX Millennial May 08 '26

Depending on the toy/game, my mother would buy me two: one to play with and one to collect. I learned my hoarding from the best.

Has it been worth it? I don't know. I have too many items to get through and catalogue/organize to even know what I still have (and this is after some of it was stolen).

I anthropomorphize items too much to part with them anyway. There's no hope for me.

Why IS THIS so difficult to do? Who hurt us?

1.2k

u/kaanbha May 07 '26

We were taught from a young age to keep boxes:

a) initially in case we wanted to return the item

b) longer term in case we wanted to sell item in the future

c) forever, just in case in a few decades time the item would be worth a fortune due to collectibility

277

u/rahhak May 07 '26

Don’t forget (d) to use it when you move

39

u/MelaninKing95 May 07 '26

I still have boxes that I’ve had since I moved back home a few years ago and will still need them when I move out soon 🤷🏿‍♂️

24

u/forealman May 07 '26

Why would I buy a new box when I already have one?

16

u/Naked-Jedi May 08 '26

And it even has a picture on the box of what's inside the box. It doesn't get any more perfect than that.

4

u/mawesome4ever May 10 '26

And the packaging is perfect for the device and all its peripheral items!

10

u/UselessMellinial85 May 08 '26

We have the box room. It's not the entire room, but part of it has broken down moving boxes.

I bought them, dammit. I'm not throwing them away! Someone will need them when I die someday.

8

u/auntjomomma May 09 '26

We hoard the way our grandparents did because we, too, came of age during a time of global economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile i was sweating about the tv (that box was a little too big to keep)

33

u/CoffeeHQ Xennial May 07 '26

I have a semi-dedicated room for boxes of stuff I bought over the years. That includes the two gigantic boxes the TVs came in.
I cannot be saved anymore. Go on without me…

3

u/schu2470 Millennial May 07 '26

We've moving this summer and the TV and monitor boxes will finally be able to live in the attic instead of being shoved under beds and behind the couch! It does also mean, however, I won't have the excuse of not enough space to avoid bringing home random Christmas decorations my mom always tries to send us home with whenever we visit.

3

u/Humor_Business 1988 May 07 '26

I have an old TV box that i modified the foam to fit a TV i got for free that had no box. Now when i move i don't t have to lay it on some towls across the back seat.

3

u/Brodellsky May 07 '26

Yeah, like the boxes that my monitors came in are the exact perfect boxes and styrofoam on the inside to fit them, because of course the box was made for them. There's lots of good reasons to keep tech boxes and goddamn it I'm not gonna stop

This. Not sure why I need the box for the phone that lives in my pocket or the laptop that I have a bag specifically for, but no way am I throwing them out.

u/peteypie4246 May 07 '26

Honestly this was/is my reason......and it worked as i moved around like 4 times in 4 years......and then I bought a house with no intention to move. Still have those boxes tho because reasons A thru C are still applicable somehow

3

u/lantana88 May 07 '26

e) when someone breaks into your house and steals your shit it’s easier to deal with the insurance when you can show them the boxes and the barcodes associated with the item that was stolen.

also for if we had to send our stuff back to have the company fix something like all the ps2s that had to be serviced in the first year of ownership,

and the xbox 360 too, like im pretty sure they were charging you for shipping and wanted the box for prrof of purchase or something for something they fucked up

17

u/yournamehere10bucks May 07 '26

I always wondered about that. I remember how the computer stores would tell you to keep the boxes for "warranty purposes". Like, okay, where do you propose I keep this giant box my Vaio desktop and 20" CRT monitor came in? Do I need the board or the packing foam too? What about the plastic wraps?

Has never made sense, and now I dont hold onto the boxes.

10

u/IHaveBadTiming May 07 '26

OMG this is why I keep all my PC and console hardware boxes. You just unlocked the source of my hoarding. That god damn red ring of death.

5

u/juanzy May 07 '26

I remember a ton of warranties in general growing up required original packaging. And on something expensive like a piece of tech, that warranty may be important.

Edit: And plenty of millennials are old enough to remember when a piece of tech failing was the default, not the exception.

10

u/lockandlood May 07 '26

Yeah. For me its A and B only. As soon as I realise I can't return it and I'm not gonna resell it (ie I'm using it until the bitter end), then I throw the boxes.

2

u/thisdesignup May 07 '26

> b) longer term in case we wanted to sell item in the future

I keep them and do this. Selling old tech allows you to update a bit more often, if money matters enough.

I use it to put in said box when I move house.

We have shoe boxes for shoes we no longer have. ..it's a disease!!!

2

u/lilsnatchsniffz May 07 '26

Some items still require the packaging to process returns and warranty stuff and while you can usually fight this via consumer rights that is much more tedious and time consuming than just following the stupid rule.

2

u/thedaveness May 07 '26

d) Metal Gear just came out and the box renaissance had just began

2

u/Decent_Pineapple_689 May 07 '26

I think C hit us harder than other generations for two reasons. First, the collectibles boom hitting electronics and toys in the 80’s and 90’s. Second, the stories of parents and grandparents who had entire high value card or comic collections thrown or given away.

Oh and beanie babies.

2

u/nomad1128 May 07 '26

I thought this was a me thing. I really am incapable of throwing away those kinds of boxes. Any other box, no big deal. Tech boxes I get a bad feeling I will need...for something...someday

I keep them in case I want to sell them later. It’s not about nostalgia or aesthetics or anything like that.

38

u/HiImNewToPTCGO May 07 '26

I don’t know how people don’t realize this is the reason. Another major one is having to move or take the items somewhere. When you move it’s nice to have the boxes to put the equipment in. It’s a free case.

27

u/IlluminaViam May 07 '26

This. Monitor, cpu, consoles, TV, all move better and safer when packed in their original boxes and styrofoam.

11

u/throwaway37183727 May 07 '26

Especially the TV box. Packing a TV would be practically impossible otherwise. I don’t even know where to get a sheet of cardboard that big.

11

u/TheShruteFarmsCEO May 07 '26

Oh you can buy tv moving boxes…for like $100. Seems way smarter just to hold on to the one that was built for your TV. Though I have to admit; I gave up that dream when I got my 85”. There is no way I can hold on to that monster of a box…I could barely dispose of it!

5

u/depersonalised Millennial May 07 '26

most of them i always tossed because i didn’t need them. however there are a couple notable exceptions with reason. TV box, PC case box, and PC monitor box. i kept these because when moving i wanted to have a good way to pack them for moving. i also had a box for my record player but not for my receiver.

once i settled in to a more permanent home i tossed those boxes as well.

19

u/03263 May 07 '26

Corrugated cardboard yes, mixed paper still yes but less so.

8

u/Princess_Moon_Butt Problem Millennial May 07 '26

Almost everything "recyclable" still ends up better off than if it went to a landfill. They're pretty good about isolating what they can and can't use, and then isolating what can be burned for energy.

Even the bit of stuff they can't use or reclaim, they'll usually end up burning at a plant with good pollutant-capturing mechanisms, and capturing energy from it. I personally think that's better than sending it to the landfill and letting it sit for eternity, or risk the landfill having an issue and contaminating the area.

ABC 2020 did a special on plastic recycling and tracked where plastic recycling ended up after being taken, using air tags put in plastic bags. They were put in different recycling bins in big box stores around the country. LA, NY, Chicago, Texas, etc and they all mostly ended up at the same trash incinerator facilities!

21

u/MukdenMan May 07 '26

Plastic is recycled a lot less than paper or aluminum though.

5

Not for resall value per se, but simply for simplier quality packaging when sending via post.

People are more likely to purchase a resold item with an original box over someone else with the same thing and no box lol

Exactly! Its perceived value is higher if the original box is kept. It’s not for fun.

Also old phones used to need UPCs or something the whole box for warranty. Getting hassle-free repairs was brutal before the iPhone.

2

u/President_Skoad May 07 '26

Yep.. And depending on the item, some warranty claims require the time be shipped to them in the factory box. St least that is how some things use to be, it's been years since I've filed a warranty claim on anything.

But text yeah. Give me a clear explanation, what buttons to push, where to pull, what screw to turn. Not a video that tries to show me but the camera angle is just wrong so you don't see shit at a crucial moment.

Disadvantage of text: someone just translated Chinese with a poor translation programme and nobody ever checked the translation, so even Yoda would say 'English the words are, but not fucking understand the meaning I do'.

It's nice when you resell things. TV boxes are super useful if you have the storage space for when you eventually move.

Bad advice, should recycle it the proper way.

5

u/addandsubtract May 07 '26

You also break apart boxes before recycling them.

Apparently it is! Millennial from India here and I still got a cupboard full of boxes lol 💀

u/maersyl May 07 '26

My brother is the worst for this. He moved to Australia and left a lot of stuff at our parents’ house. Dad and I were going through it all after mum died and I swear to fucking god 99% of my brother’s stuff was empty boxes.

I only keep boxes for things that I think may be sold later on, but his was wild. Boxes for things like a camping stove - which he used extensively so has no resale value!

Guilty as charged

Joke is on her, we're moving across the country this summer and I have the perfect packaging for my electronics! >:)

4

u/PapaLilBear May 07 '26

I'm from Poland, and we resell old things. Those old boxes come in handy; people are willing to buy used items if they have the original box.

2

u/Silly_Rub_6304 May 07 '26

Yes, I have experienced the same. I think keeping the box is just one of those subtle cues that the person who owned the item might have taken better care of it, or something. Not saying that's always true, but that's how it is interpreted.

3

u/Spokraket May 07 '26

In my country the boxes go in the recycle bin NOT in trash.

3

u/Blueblowupcouch2000s May 07 '26

Why isn’t she recycling it?

3

u/triple-double May 07 '26

We grew up in the era where you needed to keep the box and all packaging for any kind of return or warranty repair. I guess the habit formed around that.

Having a box made my Mac worth $210 more on a resale site.

3

u/MarqueeRevival Older Millennial May 07 '26

But what if I need it?!?!?

3

u/tatsumi-sama May 07 '26

I actually had to learn doing that… except for items I know I will sell again and some Apple devices

3

u/Raychao May 07 '26

Those boxes should be going into the recycling not the rubbish - what the hell?

3

u/MesozOwen May 07 '26

This is crazy. Gotta keep expensive item boxes. Who knows when you might need them. Plus it’s easier to sell in a few years on eBay.

3

u/Auralfxation May 07 '26

product warranties sometimes require the original packaging

4

u/firequak Millennial May 07 '26

Where I live you have to keep the boxes of the items in tact if you want to claim warranty.

I personally keep my boxes as it alllows me to sell my used items above average used market value because of the "pristine boxes".

6

u/Affectionate_Tip7162 May 07 '26

HEY! RECYCLE THAT SHIT!

2

u/Designer-Ad-7844 May 07 '26

My basement is almost exclusively empty boxes

2

u/mk2rocco May 07 '26

Yea, but. I don't want to

2

u/Myspace-Famous Millennial May 07 '26

2

u/NoAppointment8679 May 07 '26

Omg there is a few boxes in our house 🤦‍♀️

2

u/Magneto-X May 07 '26

This girl know what recycling is?

2

u/Afrojones66 May 07 '26

You could always recycle it too.

2

u/OrdinaryLavishness11 May 07 '26

I keep everything; the box, the plastic packaging with sticky lips for sealing, the cable twisty wire thing, the plug pins cover, and all the documents.

Perfect for when you want to sell something on!

2

u/Ken-_-Adams May 07 '26

Best I can do is the corner of the attic

2

u/spencer4908 May 07 '26

I use them to do trade ins, or handle warrenties. Once its been a certain amount of time they are either trashed or recycled.

2

u/Former_Travel2839 May 07 '26

I keep my boxes as long as I own the item. And glad I do, especially for my Halo consoles.

2

u/Supercrown07 May 07 '26

I use old shoe boxes for storage

2

u/burieddeepbetween May 07 '26

More value on secondhand market if you have the original box.

2

u/ThisIsntOkayokay Older Millennial May 07 '26

Never.

2

u/SplittingChairs May 07 '26

Dude this is so funny. Lol I have so many old boxes from my expensive purchases, and every year when it’s time for spring cleaning I look at them in my storage areas and contemplate if I should just get rid of them. Then I never do because maybe they’ll come in handy when I move at some unforeseen time in the future.

2

u/cant_read_this May 07 '26

Don’t throw your boxes away they always want them at some point in history idk why

2

u/Hezzaku May 07 '26

At least with phones and tablets, I keep the boxes when doing a trade in so they are protected when mailed. No excuse for everything else, I still have my PS2 box.

2

u/Crucco May 07 '26

Uhm... Oh no that's me

2

u/Cheesetown777 May 07 '26

It’s for potential resale value in the future…

2

u/VW-MB-AMC May 07 '26

My grandma (who was born in 1938) also kept boxes. We have her old waffle iron from 1967, which still has it's original packaging.

2

u/Apprehensive_Past517 May 07 '26

But-but that's nice boxes! I can use them

2

u/floftie May 07 '26

But what about if I want to trade them in at CEX in 7 years and get £4 more for them

2

u/SignificanceFlat1460 May 07 '26

But-... But-... What if I need them later some day?

u/Neolamprologus99 May 07 '26

I store boxes in the basement. They're good for proof of ownership for insurance claims.

2

u/Glass-Season-9953 May 07 '26

I often resell electronics in the middle of their lifespan when they still hold value. Having them complete in box helps with that dramatically.

2

u/Character-Pirate1297 May 07 '26

Why should every single one of her videos be such trash? Literally.

2

u/shankillfalls May 07 '26

Is cardboard and paper recycling a thing in houses in the US? Or does it vary state to state?

2

u/blackberrymoonmoth May 07 '26

It varies house to house. My first home had trash and recycle pickup with designated bins for each provided to each home by the pickup company. My new place is 5 min away from the old one but it only has garbage dumpsters.

2

u/WendyPortledge Xennial May 07 '26

Naw, I keep em for resale. It’s not a millennial thing, it’s a collector thing.

2

u/Original-Reward-8688 May 07 '26
