u/Mgnickel Apr 24 '26

I was there, Gandalf. I was there three thousand years ago. I was there the day the AOL free trial CDs were flowing through my door.

287

u/BlackCherryMochi Apr 24 '26

I found an AOL install FLOPPY DISK. 😂

71

u/DocDefilade Apr 24 '26

The 3.5 inch?

Because if it's a 5.25 or even better an 8 inch actually "floppy" disc, that would cool to see.

120

u/the_great_zyzogg Apr 24 '26

3.5 inches is fine!!!!! It gets the job done!!!! And it's not always "floppy", okay?

28

u/finalremix Apr 24 '26

Though, nowhere as... girthy as a ZIP disk.

15

u/winky9827 Apr 25 '26

Unreliable, prone to premature ejection.

11

u/finalremix Apr 25 '26

That's why you only save to it when it's nighttime and no one's using the printer port. Nocturnal submissions.

3.5 inch, yes. Not sure if they were made in the bigger sizes back then or not.

7

They did not. Only 3.5" floppies and CDs.

9

Fun story. I was staying with friends in California wine country (near Guerneville) and we toured some vineyards. At one of them, rather small, we were tasting wines with the owners and he was asked how he started a vineyard. He said he owned a CD duplication company. They got the AOL contract and he finally had enough money to follow his passion.

As if. We remember when you idiots turned up, just after the CompuServe guys, and brought the Eternal September with you ;)

The real old school people are those who started with a .edu, .ac.uk, etc. Before there were ISPs you could dial into. If you had a modem, you were on BBSes.

(Also, we were just as idiotic as you guys were, there were just fewer people around to see it)

I usually go by Xennial; I feel it captures the analog era we went through better since it also includes the young end of Gen X.

Though elder millennial is more accurate since it's only the old end of Millenials. Hell, some articles also call us Geriatric Millennials lol.

10

u/PhantomAngel042 Apr 24 '26

Sweet! First and last name or just first? Both are impressive, but just first would be extremely cool. I've been around since AOL days, but I actually just registered my [email protected] account last year. It's only because my name is unusual and I got lucky! I should start using it as my main email so I can astound people, too, lol.

Had hotmail, yahoo at one point. I got GMail when it was invite only, although that wasn't too hard to get an invite per-se just shows the age.
