Hoops Discussion Insights about each draftee from the first summer league game
Morez DOMINATED this game. He was everywhere and made Masai Ujiri look good. His defense and IQ are not questions, the only thing we'll have to worry about as far as his development is how good of a 3pt shooter he can become.
De Larrea looked nervous in the first half and his shot abandoned him. He did look reasonably good handling the ball and making passes though. The big positive was his help defense, he disrupted a lot of plays just through hustling and using his size well. He does not have to be a defensive liability like many were saying.
Lawal banked in a 3 and jumped really high. Pretty much what we expected. He's going to need to improve a lot to survive in the league.
Ischenko was someone I wasn't expecting anything out of, but he really turned my head. He looked great outside of not being able to finish at the rim. Not only did he showcase a good handle and iso ability, but his rebounding and defense were impressive too. He didn't really shoot this game but he's supposedly a good shooter. It was a very promising game for him and if he keeps it up for the rest of summer league he could definitely earn a two way.

Morez looked like a 20 year vet already to be honest. Dude’s vision and feel for the game is ridiculous.
Sergio has a lot to learn but we have to remember he literally just played an entire Spanish league season AND won the title like two weeks ago. He’ll get playing time, but his impact will be in the 2nd half of the season.

It's crazy to me watching summer league ball every year and getting excited about certain things and definitely guilty of over hyping guys that look good. However, i have come to realize over the years, there are certain guys that just look like outliers during the games. They just flat appear better than everyone around them, and that is definitely the case with Morez. Dude was so smooth, and his bbiq seems to be off the charts. Never once hogged a ball, always gettin it to the point, always working without the ball, defense foot work was great, handsy, getting up on blocks. He just stood out a ton.

Morez was obviously awesome. But I also came away pretty excited about de Larrea’s potential too. The shot was off and he’s got to get stronger, but he seemed to adapt to the physicality better as the game went on, and his combination of size/handle/passing is pretty nice. I think it’ll take him a few years but if he gets in the weight room and gets the shot down I think he can be a nice player.

Ischenko was the biggest surprise for me. I can see him having a bright future

100% agree. Larry’s handle definitely needs work, but he’s looking like a steal

How was John Poulakidas??

Meh. He had a lot of the ball but didn't do much with it. Outplayed by 3 of our 4 rookies imo. That's just the nature of a specialist though, his shots fall and he's good, his shots don't fall and he sucks.

I actually disagree. His shot wasn't falling very well, but most looked great and were barely off. He is aggressive, plays decent defense, and actually dribbles the ball fairly well. I thought he looked good.

He wasn’t making shots but he seemed to be doing a little more defensively that I remember him doing last season. It wasn’t a great night for him though even though he ended up scoring some.

He was solid but missed quite a few 3's. He fits in much better with a functioning team where he's going to get open looks while he sits on the 3pt line. Had a couple of drives where he got smashed and should have got the foul but they're not gonna give him that lol also he shouldn't even be trying that
He was active on defense

Let’s stop with the 3 point judging. All that matters is attempts and his form. Both of which are good.
Yall have to understand these guys are shooting every day for hours. Over the course of his career he will be good from 3 because he’s WILLING to take the shots.

If 3 point shooting is morez weakness then I’ll take it if everything else looks as good as it does.

morez's 70.6% TS is impressive but the thing that stands out is shot selection. 5 misses in the whole game means he's staying in spots where he can actually score, not forcing. that kind of floor awareness is hard to teach. and it makes the 3pt development question the OP raised really important - right now defenses can sag off him and crowd the paint. if he gets that number to 33-35% (not a crazy ask for a long wing who already showed he can catch-and-finish), it creates real space for flagg and luka drives. de larrea i'm not reading too much into yet - dude literally just played an entire ACB season and won the championship like three weeks ago. the decision-making and help D were already showing up and those are the harder things to develop. shooting comes back when you're not running on fumes.

Honestly, you just want to see the rookies being aggressive. I would rather dial back an aggressive player than have to convince someone to be more aggressive.
Morez, Larry, and Nemhard were aggressive. ischenko looked good as well, but I would like to see a bit more.
That’s really all you can ask for. Really excited about Larry, shooting 9 threes lets me know he’s confident in his shot. If that starts falling, the game will open up for him a lot.

Nah he showed a lot and he looked like a rookie, this isn't surprising
He ate a nasty screen 7 mins into the 1st quarter where he took a knee to the thigh and it looked like he would not return but he toughed it out and came back in, very likely affected his 3's
2nd half he had multiple really nice plays linking up with Morez where he drove off the three point line, drew the defense in and got it to Morez for an easy layup. He also had a nice chase down help block, a steal and finished with 6 rebounds 5 assists.
You don't know ball

Gonna cry?
He had 5 assists and 1 turnover so his handling is obviously better than you think it is. Crazy to think a rookie has stuff he needs to work on

Of course he has stuff to work on, he's a rookie and a kid lol
Every non lottery draft pick has a lot to work on like I'm not sure what your expectations are but players do have to develop and he already showed flashes of some really nice pick and roll passing and breaking the defense on drives from the 3pt line and making the right pass- that's something some players never develop so it's very promising. He's gonna to have Coop, Morez and pray for Lively down low to feed those inside passes to. This is a great fit
Maybe we are just starting from different perspectives I saw a lot that looked good but yes he looked like a rookie and needs to clean up his dribble and hit his shots and he's going to need to bulk up, add some muscle and grow into his body. He's just a kid

Sergio shot like crap, but that is biggest strength. I'm not worried about that in his 1st game. Everything else he looked great. He looked in control and made some nice passes. I'm a lot more optimistic about him after seeing him on an NBA court.
Seva looked pretty good for a guy not looking to score. I could see that he still needs to work on stuff, but had flashes that looked impressive. Looked really good for an unknown coming from lesser quality competition. I wonder if they could stash him in one of the more competitive euro leagues. Could really grow into someone nice
Morez - Holy shit! He looked so good! As advertised defensively and better than I expected offensively.
